Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Martellus Bennett. Who do you want to surround him with? Those guys are all studs and he's a turd. Didn't see this until after I posted. Holmes got cut a while ago I thought.
Ballsy-est post ive seen in a long time. Props! And i dont disagree. QBs take a long time to develop. Coaching is more important in the nfl than any other pro sport.
He's not a train wreck anymore? What? This team had nothing to play for Geno had no pressure to perform. Let's not fall into the same trap as last yr with the last 4 games. If he's a starter next yr ... I look forward to drafting a QB high in 2016 because there's nothing about Geno Smith you should like. Get Cooper this yr solidify the offensive line and we'll be in position to draft a Connor Cook nxt yr
So what exactly do you want to do with Geno? Cut him just because? He has a cap hit of 1.4 million. Dead money of 1.1 million. Cutting him would be more of a move to act like it's a new era or some garbage instead of an actual football decision. He's gonna stay around but he's not going to be our only option. Hopefully whoever the coach is has the veteran QB ready to perform instead of off day dreaming and hopefully we still grab a young QB later in the draft. By no means am I saying Geno is the starter, I fully expect him to lose in TC/preseason to whatever veteran we bring in. But looking at his salary, it doesn't make sense just to get rid of him to get rid of him. And he isn't out here looking like Joe Flacco did every game. I say keep him along for the ride, most likely nothing flashes next year and he rides as a backup for the year.
Really hoping Geno doesn't take another snap at QB. Well at least not a meaningful snap. I hope we get a vet next year - I would try and pry away 1 of the Rams QBs (Bradford or Austin Davis). Jets should also look to acquire a QB in the draft - if it's Winston / Mariota then they will sit while the vet comes in and plays. Geno would be 3rd on the depth chart. I really do not believe he has anything good to offer to this team.
So you want the exact scenario I described? A veteran qb plus someone from the draft even if it's not a top 2 QB.
The guy is a complete trainwreck though, he showed it yesterday. Honestly if we do get a vet and rookie, I would actually look to trade Geno Smith if possible. Maybe you can get a 6th rounder or some value.
I now know that you don't understand the game of football. I had doubts before, so thanks for clearing it up.
I would like to see Geno with a offense oriented HC. He doesnt need to be the starter, or even the backup, but I'd like to see what he could do if he was actually coached a bit. Maybe a new coach could help him inside the 20's, which is where he struggles the most. There is a lot of arm talent there, its just a matter of bringing it all together. Can he do it? I dont know, but he's not going anywhere, so may as well see what new coaching could do. Either way, we need a rookie and FA QB coming in this year. Geno cannot be the starter next year.
No reason to cut/release Geno Smith and who knows what could happen with him with a bright offensive mind in here and if he works hard. But from where were sitting todays there's also no reason to believe he will ever be anything effective. Because of that they should move heaven and earth to get a good QB in here. If there was ever an offseason to go ALL OUT on acquiring a decent QB its now where there's cap room and a relatively bare cupboard.
ROFLMAO!!! Not to worry. I know that NE isn't going to trade Garoppalo to the Jets for any price (unless they've concluded that he's a bust.)
Why do people act like playing a young QB next season and being in position to take the top QB prospect in 2016 is a bad thing? The coach and GM will be new. Other than the impatient fans who don't know any better, what is wrong with the franchise having a true rebuilding season in 2015 devoted to young players with no expectation of winning? That is the right move. Playing a veteran QB with no upside and trying to go 8-8 with a new regime is so misguided I don't even know where to begin. Even though Bortles might not ever be the guy and their other moves have been suspect, the Jags strategy has been correct and I agree with it. Bradley was under no pressure at all to win any games his first 2 seasons as young players were given rope and they got the franchise QB in place. Only in year 3 will he finally have to show something in terms of wins. Jets need to do a real rebuild. That should mean an offensive head coach, focus on developing an aerial attack, and Geno/other young QB gets 2015 for development with no chance of being pulled for a "win-now" vet if there is a bad game or 2. The impatient fans will just have to deal with it. They can take their "win-now" stopgap QB mentality with Rex and hit the road. I want this team by 2017 to have a franchise QB in place and the ability to put up 35+ points in any given game. If that means a lousy 2015 and another patient 2016, then so be it. People want long-term sustained success, but then the second a Bradford, Hoyer, or Cutler are options, they start screaming for them. Stop the nonsense. This franchise has done it the wrong way for far too long.
I'm not for sacrificing 2015 to break in yet another rookie starting Qb. They say that the Raiders rookie Qb had a good year but look at the record. Get an experienced guy who wants to start and bring back Geno as the backup. With the picks we get we could plug up a lot of weaknesses and with that cap space fill holes.
So you view 2015 as a season to shoot for the playoffs? Why? Let's say we get an experienced guy and improve 4 or 5 games to go 7-9 or 8-8. Then we still need a QB and wasted a year to develop one and now we don't have a good enough draft pick to take one in 2016. The treadmill mentality will be gone with Rex. The new GM will hopefully recognize the need for a global rebuild.
If Rex goes these are the things likely to change: 1. David Harris, Calvin Pace and Dawan Landry are starters likely to be looking for jobs elsewhere in 2015. 2. Calvin Pryor (SS), Quinton Coples (DT/DE), Sheldon Richardson (DT) and DeMario Davis (MLB or LOLB) are starters likely to be playing a different position than they played this year. 3. Kyle Wilson, Antonio Allen, Jaiqwan Jarrett, Jason Babin and one or more of the backup/rotational defensive linemen are likely to be elsewhere also. That's just on the defensive side. A new head coach turns over the roster very quickly when it is not good or has been stocked with players to fit his predecessors scheme. If John Idzik is gone also the carnage on the roster is going to be widespread. So, the basis of the Jets defenses for the last half decade is basically going to vanish overnight. We'll recognize some of the names because the Jets have some good players but just like Eric Mangini's defense was mostly gone by 2010, Rex's defense will mostly be gone by 2016. On offense things will become even more fluid because that's the side of the ball where the Jets have added the most players over the last two years as they scuffled to find playmakers and offensive linemen. The two really established players on that side are Nick Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Neither of those guys is going to be in a new regime's long-term plans because they're both over 30. There is nobody else AT ALL on that side of the ball that is a guarantee to be viewed favorably by a new regime. Jace Amaro comes the closest and he's the kind of player that a new GM could see as a budding star or as virtually without value depending on the bias they have to or away from the spread. One of the reasons I really want Idzik to get year 3 of his plan is that I'm pretty sure year 1 of the next guy's plan is going to solidify the Jets status as a top 5 pick holder for a year or two. We might get lucky in that area but most of the notable players on this team on defense are Rex's guys and most of the notable players on offense are either past regime and aging or were acquired by John Idzik. The most likely result of cleaning house this year is going to be 2-14 next year.
Trading is fine too, down the road. Cutting/releasing him, I just don't see the benefit unless you have the starting qb and backup locked in, which we clearly don't
Awesome, what's your plan? Mine just suggested adding two qbs to our current starter geno. Considering you think I know nothing for wanting to add QBs to the roster, I must know your plan. I basically want to add a veteran, add a young qb in the draft even if it's not a top qb, and keep geno. What exactly is your plan? If I know nothing I want to learn
Great post. 2-14 is a great outcome for 2015 if it comes as a result of being year 1 in a new regime that overhauls the roster, with a focus on player development over wins, and nets us the #1 pick in the 2016 draft. I don't see how any fan could complain about that, although a good percentage of the fanbase would. Some fans will never see more long-term so there will be many that have to be dragged kicking and screaming to get on board with that strategy. But I will take a brutal 2015 and a rebuilding 2016 if it means we are a perennial playoff/title contender with a franchise QB and good coach for 2017 and beyond.
There is no way to win now. Best bet would be a season like the Bills are having this year. I'm not trading away the future for that.
