We can't pick higher than 3rd in any scenario at this point. It will be Bucs, Titans or Raiders picking top 2. If we lose next week and Raiders win Bills or next week and Jaguars win next week we will pick 3rd. If we lose and Raiders and Jaguars lose out we'll pick 5th. We'll go 4th over whomever wins a game if the teams win 1 of the 3 outstanding games.
if the rumors of Tennessee interested in Cutler is true, we'd have a choice of Cooper or one of the two QBs.
The prospect of getting a WR with our problems at QB is just not thrilling. Yeah, it's what you do when the WR is an impact player but you could put a 25 year old Randy Moss out there right now and the offense would still blow chunks.
I'll bet you that the Titans trade for Cutler cheap and then take Mariotta with the #1 pick if they have it. I don't think they'll take Winston on the #2 but they'd probably take Mariotta and warehouse him for a year or two with Cutler holding the fort.
Third is still a great position to be in at this point, better than 6th at least. It makes it a lot less likely that we will be screwed over by someone trading back, since it is unlikely that the Bucs or Titans trade back IMO. Plus, being guaranteed Mariota, Winston, or Cooper is a good position to be in. I know a WR won't change this team, but it will improve the offense more than picking an OLB or DE will. If we deem a LT worth taking in the top 5, I will fully support that pick as well.
With how Mettenberger has been playing and with the vast number of holes at other positions, I can't really see them trading for Cutler AND picking a top Qb. It would probably be the best move but if they get Cutler I think they will be satisfied with him starting as Mettenberger develops. Could be wrong, of course. Plus the Bucs will likely pick first overall.
Not my point!!! I only bring it up to the many on this site win last week's win were screaming we lost Cooper The Jets need a lot a help in many positions, you take the BPA with a common sense approach of need. Target QB gone, I'd take the top player at any position.
except DE. Personally I would be fine with taking the best outside pass rusher myself (though most of our fan base would complain incessantly), but ultimately we have to take BPA baring a few particular positions. Defensive line is one of them.
Mettenberger was a 6th round pick. With the injuries last year in school and this year in the pros I'm not sure the titans won't just move on and be content with having him as a cheap 3rd QB on the depth chart for a few years. They're not going to pick up Cutler's guarantees just to sit him. Once they pick up Cutler I think it means they have moved on from Mettenberger.
To be fair, he was a 6th round pick BECAUSE of his injury. Otherwise he could have easily gone in the 3rd round based on his performance. If they pick up Cutler, Cutler will certainly start. I agree to that; he could be their franchise Qb and they will accept the cost if they believe him to be. But I'm not quite sure they would give up so easily on Mettenberger. His injuries have certainly not been good, but his play hasn't been poor. 59.8% completion, more TDs than interceptions, etc., and on a team with literally no talent. If the Titans move on, I would love for the Jets to grab him cheap.
Jameis Winston will be there for us at number 4. Tampa will take Mariota. Tennessee will sign Cutler. Jacksonville will not take a QB. Even if we finish at 5 behind Oakland, we will likely still be able to get him. Oakland will not be picking another QB over Carr
Somebody could trade up. We also don't know for sure that the Titans will be interested in Cutler if they have a chance to draft one of the top two QBs. And the Jags would likely be very interested in Cooper - they need a WR for Bortles badly. So I think it's still possible the top 3 would be Mariota-Winston-Cooper and the Jets would be kind of screwed at #4. I guess they could go for a pass-rusher in Gregory or Ray to replace Pace, but that's obviously not as big of a need. So the Jags winning next week would be huge. I also don't think it's a sure thing Mariota goes #1. Winston could sell tons of tickets in TB and I think there's an argument to be made that he's a better pro prospect.
Falco, is a Jameis Winston fan boy, you're not going to convince him, that Cooper is the better option over Winston. But I agree, give me Cooper, Garret Grayson, and Matt Moore and I'll be fine.
As much as I like Winston, he isn't without risks (mostly off-field). By all accounts, Cooper is a model citizen off the field, and he's a great player.
