Even if somehow the Jets got Mariota, I would not want to in effect depend on him being the starter on Opening Day. So one of those mediocre FA options would be necesary even if they were picking Mariota. Vick has to go and Smith should be no more than 3rd string, and preferably off the team.
But the Jets still assume the full cap hit of the contract which is what fans care about. Nobody cares whether Woody has to cut him a check, we care how it effects the team and that is a salary cap discussion. You don't pay him an elite salary cap salary for average QB ability at best.
agreed, we'll need a vet to start whether we land Mariota or not. also agreed on Vick, he needs to go.
Don't really get your point. Whenever you are trading up the team with the higher pick holds the better hand, that's why it's never an even swap. Once the draft order is set, there may end up being poor trading up options but I don't see how anyone can make the blanket statement that trading up to get a potential franchise QB is a poor option in general. Note I would give up the first pick/Mariota for much less than NE's entire roster sans Brady.
Cutler? Really? That's the best you got? If that's the Jets best option for 2015, then they ought to just go ahead and forfeit all our games next year. At least that would put us at the top of the draft and give us a shot at the best QB prospect in the 2016 draft. Cutler is a better version of Geno and all he would accomplish is to have us at 6-10 or maybe 8-8 at best, and lousy draft position. Cannon for an arm, a $.10 brain. He hasn't learned much in his time in the league, and apparently you haven't either. He still forces passes and throws a ton of picks. If Chicago is ready to part with him, that should tell you all you need to know.
its gonna be a down year again, I almost expect something like what happened in houston, we'll sign an average holdover like Moore/Hoyer and play the draft by ear. maybe winston/mariota falls maybe we take hundley or petty in 2nd or 3rd, who knows, but betting odds are on a tough year for any rook regardless of who that is. the coaching staff will also evaluate Geno under their terms and system while he plays backup/competition bait. we're looking at another year of inconsistent at best QB play. we should be so lucky to have a very good scheme to pick up the slack, at this point I look at offensive coaches as more important than who we get at QB, at least as far as our chances next year goes.
Cutler is a decent option I think you just have a hate on. In Chicago and Denver he has been a face of the franchise guy and he isn't that! He isn't the leader of a dressing room... He is a piece to a team player and that's the role he needs to play. Very similar to Romo or Alex Smith. If you have so much football knowledge grow a pair and tell me what is the best option for the Jets in 2015?
-Sign Hoyer -draft one of Hundley, Cook, Petty in the mid rounds -open competition between Geno and Hoyer
The absolute worst thing the Jets could do is trade for Cutler. He is Jeff George redux. He could not be successful with two offensive minded pass happy coaches with tons of skill player talent. He is now being run out of town by the second team he has played for. What more do you need to know????? He is douche bag, he is a turnover machine, he has a horrible attitude, he is not a leader, he gets sacked too much. I could go on and on. Give me ANYONE but Cutler at this point. I'd take Sanchez back before Cutler. I'd trot Geno out there another year instead of hitching our wagon to this loser. Give me RGII or Bradford on a show me contract, but not Cutler and his millions for nothing. Cutler would be a nightmare on this team with the current attitude of the fan base.
NFL.com on Cutler to the Jets: Why it would happen: Because ignoring all the warning signs and bringing Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari to Gotham is the most Jetsy thing imaginable. John Idzik, Rex Ryan, Geno Smith andMichael Vick could all be swept out in the next few months. The next regime could select a quarterback in the draft and tab Cutler as a short-term solution while the kid is groomed. There are PSLs to sell, you know. Why it wouldn't happen: Because, if there's a God up there, he knows Jets fans have already suffered too much.
If Cutler is traded & doesn't restructure, the acquiring team is on the hook for 2 years, $31.5mil. That's not crazy for a starting QB.
Moore, Hoyer or Bradford would all be better options imo. IMO Cutler is not a decent option. He still forces passes into double and triple coverage, he gets rattled very easily and is not a leader. Even if Chicago releases him, he won't come cheaply. He is not the veteran I'd want a rookie QB learning from.
Cutler should be strongly considered- he is not a great QB but he's solid. He completes over 65% of his passes, which is unheard of in recent Jets memory. And though he throws interceptions, he throws even more TDs. With merely decent QB play and a couple of reasonable corners, the team should be much better. I don't think you take a first round QB just because you need one and one is available - you have to make sure you feel he is the RIGHT guy for your franchise. It's not a situation where you should automatically take an early QB who you are lukewarm on just because he's there. Cutler would be a solid bridge QB to hold the fort for 2 - 3 years while we regenerate the team to the point where we can contend again. Meanwhile we groom a mid round guy with potential to take the reins a few years from now. If we pick Winston we have to accept a 13 TDs 21 INTs, 52% completion rating, 2,980 yard season and the 5-11 record that goes along with it. He will be a rookie from a non pro system with great receivers, having to adjust to a pro system and average at best receivers. So he will be downright bad his first 2 years in the league even if he actually is good (which I doubt he will be.) I just can't get excited about throwing away another 2 seasons with the third lousy, inconsistent QB in a row just to find out if he can be decent. We already know Jay Cutler is decent. We need a decent QB. Just go get him and move on to addressing the team's other issues.
Trading for Cutler is really dependent on what they want for him. 2nd round pick and 60% of the guaranteed money covered? 3rd round pick and 90% of the money covered? Both of those options make me pause.
