you couldn't possibly ( no fan could) assess honestly and accurately the performance of every GM in the NFL. Just sayin

It wasn't really like that. Some of these CBs playing well this season were too old for a rebuilding team to get, like Revis, Cromartie, Flowers, etc. Revis makes sense for the Patriots at 30 because they have a superbowl window now, we don't. Why would we bring him in just so he gets too old to play by the time we rebuild? Makes no sense.

Others, like Vehrner and Flowers didn't fit into Rex's defensive scheme.

Vontae Davis they did try to sign, but he resigned with his team, the Colts. You can't really blame Idzik for that, as the player's current team is generally going to have an advantage in Free Agency, especially when they have Andrew Luck and we have Geno.

DRC was paid a lot by the Giants for a guy who isn't really that good, and we would have to pay even more for him, because all things being equal, with Giants' history and Eli, guess where DRC would go. So I applaud Idzik for not investing a ton of money into him.

Verner having a great year, and was a value at what he signed for.
DRC was not my top choice, as was just a little overpriced for the inconsistency in his game. also having a good year, but would have been a risk signing.

both Revis and Davis had interest with the Jets.
as for the other guys, you have to show interest to gain interest. Idzik's job as a GM is to pursue guys who can make the team better. I don't recall any of these players or agents rejecting talks with the Jets.

Patterson was a terrible choice, overpaid at 3M out of desperation, was a risk signing, and ended up a complete and utter flop.

he's really been a game changer for TB, he's helped them win 2 games. I am sure he would have made us a 9-10 win team.

Revis may or may not have, it may have been PR. we don't know. I wanted Revis or Cro back, he failed at both but as far as overpaying others? he did the right thing.

Bolded is not that true. Davis resigned for $9 mil a year with the team he last played for. What about that says Davis was interested?

completely disagree with the notion of not signing veterans on a rebuilding team.
every team needs a mix of youth and experience. Revis (on a multiyear deal) and Cro (as a stop gap) would've made a lot of sense to sign.

Flowers proved he didn't fit in our system with the Chiefs, so i'd pass there.
Verner i don't believe is just a cover 2 corner. in any event, we played cover 2 most of this year anyway. he would've been a good signing.

Davis would have followed the money. i wonder what joke of an offer Idzik put out there before he quickly rejoined his current team.
He would have been the best signing.

by the time we got around to meeting with DRC, all our eggs were in that basket, as the other guys were gone.
and it wasn't a good basket to be in, as DRC had risk written all over him. At that point, you almost have to take the risk, and overspend to meet the need tho. It was high dollar, but not crazy dollar. We did the same with Decker, and i don't regret that decision.

he was in contact with the Jets, and i believe received an offer from us.
I'm sure it wasn't 10M per year, which would have been worth it.

6th ranked CB in the league per PFF junc.
especially impressive against the run. He's not Tampa's problem, and would have really helped on the Jets.
not Revis level impact, but would've contributed nicely (and his contract was very reasonable).

I haven't watched him, I know TB stinks and he hasn't had much of an impact. I like Verner but I'm, not sure he was the best fit and certainly not at the $$ he wanted.

I'm glad that Tampa finally acquired a free agent CB that made a significant contribution towards putting them over the top. It sucks signing these guys and winding up with top 6 picks all the time.

You're a good poster and I'm not trying to put your feet to the fire here, but is Darrelle Revis the reason the Patriots are on top right now? Is Vontae Davis the reason the Broncos are doing well?

There's nothing wrong with DRC and Alterraun Verner but their teams suck this year because a CB isn't the answer when you have real problems at QB. That's why we talk about Franchise QB's but you never hear anybody mention a Franchise CB except in jest.

i don't think anyone would argue that QB isn't the most important position, by far, in the NFL.

I can't totally kill Idzik for the QB position. Geno hasn't worked out, and Vick was a terrible signing, but it's not easy to vastly improve the QB position quickly.
The secondary could have been vastly improved very quickly though. That's why i'm more irked about how he handled that.

And when you have great QB's, like the Patriots and Colts, you still need a good secondary.
Revis may just be the difference in the Pats finally winning that Super Bowl. They've been frustrating the shit out of opposing QB's, while still putting up those offensive numbers of years past. Dangerous combo.

he did ruin the QB position wasting 2 years w/ Geno when we had a better QB on the roster but I don't blame him for wanting to bring in his QB especially after not being able to bring in his coach. he just shouldn't have forced Geno to play.

Yeah, all I'm saying is that given what we know about the Jets offense this season was a blowout from the start. We barely got by the Raiders and then we lost to every other team that had the capability to put points on the board consistently. Our defense wasn't good but all that did was to create a few blowouts that otherwise would have been close losses.

This isn't the 2009 roster and it wouldn't have been close even with Revis back in the fold. Our offensive line is below average, our LB's are old and slow with the exception of DeMario Davis and we have no free safety to speak of. In 2009 we had Kerry Rhodes and Jim Leonhard back there, which is something nobody remembers at this point.

are you forgetting how many close games we lost?
we could've been a much more competitive team with a fixable secondary, despite having a shit show on offense. granted, we still wouldn't have gone anywhere, as the QB position was indeed a mess.

Geno wasn't a disaster early in the season either. w/ better D we could have won another game or 2 and kept the season alive. would a Verner have made that much of a difference?

draft-how about the season? seriously good for the guy printing it out hopefully he gets a billboard. i am all for freedom of speech but did you have to kill all those trees?
Idzik messed up the draft and the free agency period most notable the cornerback position and that doomed us.
He failed to use the resources he had to get the players we needed. Left a gaping hole at receiver till the Harvin trade (be honest did you think nelson and salas were starters)when he is trying to help a young q.
we have issues and he should not be judged on the recod alone he should be judged on many holes he has filled on this roster from when he started. Right now the answer 1 (being nice he did get harvin and decker two number 2 receivers) we are worse off at lb, db, qb, I will call it even at ol and te, rb we are better at receiver mostly because of the trade for harvin if not we would be worse

We had a totally crappy secondary last year also and went 8-8. Why? Because we got lucky and Geno led a few drives late. Because the front 4 made Brady and Brees and a few other guys fear for their lives.

The Jets defense this year is no different than the defense last year. Cro sucked balls all year long. Dee was rookie toast. Quick: how many times did the 2013 Jets allow 300+ passing yards? How many times this year?

The perception is different because the media has been harping on it from day 1. Last year they didn't spend the entire pre-season predicting the Jets pass defense would be bad, this year they did. That's the difference. The pass D was bad both years.

It was, what, Game 8 before the Jets secondary had an interception?! They are still near the bottom of the league in turnovers created. Imagine perhaps Geno would have been better if the Jets got to run a few plays after a sudden change...something he NEVER got to do early on. Again, the same people who refuse to hold Idzik accountable want to jettison the QB when the QB has to rely on the GM to stock the team with credible starters...Idzik went into the season without a credible starter at one CB spot and without a proven OG and with two OL starters that were marginal (Colon and Giacomini).

If we keep Idzik, then keep Rex. If we keep loosing the tickets will stay cheap. If we are not going to have a chance to win the Super Bowl, then let's not win a game. While we are at it, sign Geno to an extension. Need to give each of these guys 10 years to really see what we have. That sounds like a recipe for success
