What's the status of that Conner kid out of Michigan. Is he coming out? I heard he's a junior.

The point is they both dropped out of the top of the draft, where everyone thought they would go around this time last year. There is no must draft guy at the top this year and every player we thought might be available at 2 is still a possibilty now that we are at 6

Good ol Lovie Smith, a QB killer in regards to development.

    Have fun with that.

Cutlers has 3 year contract with 50mil guaranteed. No way the Bears just cut him and eat that much money.

Yeah and the other big thing is we've seen this before, specifically last season down the stretch when people who should know better were saying Smith had "greatly improved" in three of the last four games. Yeah, but look at the competition.

And of course how well did that "improvement" hold up and actually lead to a better overall level of performance?

    Not so much.

Let's not make the same mistake again.

These threads are ridiculous. Say goodbye to Mariota. OK, bye. Who says this kid is gonna be a good pro? he doesnt run a pro set offense. What makes him different than other Oregon QBs? What makes him different than Geno? further more, who the hell knows in December where hes gonna be picked in the spring? do you guys really think its impossible that he drops to 5 or 6????? Do you think its impossible that he drops to 15?

Havent we seen this a thousand times? the guy in December that everyone swears is gonna go top 3 ends up mid round..or 2nd round.....Isnt that EXACTLY what happened with Bridgewater? Mariota is FAR from a no brainer prospect. Pro days, combines, all that shit yet to come and some of you are convinced he's going 1 and Winston is going 2. Id bet my house that that doesn't happen.

We even have retard Bucs fans joining the board to thnk us for Mariota? hahahah what the fuck is going on?

That's why you play Z-O-N-E. You don't keep employing exotic blitzes that require your woefully thin secondary to have to play man coverage, especially when you could just rush the FIVE DL, three of which can actually rush the passer well, and still have SIX DBs to play a zone behind them.

Of course the Jets right now are ill suited to man coverage. But the Jets are not going to play 5 DL and 6 Db's on third and long.

Having 6 db's on the field obviously limits your options in the pass rush. I understand your criticism of Ryan's blitz schemes. But there's a cost to that kind of alignment. Is all I'm saying.

The Jets already DO play 5 DL, if you consider Coples and Pace DL, which I do because they can't cover anyone and are best suited to rush the passer. I'm not understanding how you can say "having 6 dbs on the field limits your options in the pass rush..." How? You can rush whomever you want. And I REALLY don't understand what cost would be realized with a 6 DB (dime package) in an obvious passing situation, which is what 3rd and long is.

My issues with Ryan's reliance on exotic blitzing is that it doesn't fool anyone most of the time and puts players in positions that they are not as effective as they would be if they employed more conventionally. For example, if the Jets simply rushed the three DL and Coples and Pace/Babin and played a zone behind them, they would probably give up fewer third down conversions, especially on third and long because the DBs would have to cover for less time and with more help. They wouldn't have to cover one-on-one. They could simply let the play develop underneath and come up to make the tackle. And the players best suited to rush the passer--Coples, Richardson, Pace, Babin--that Ryan puts in coverage would provide better pressure because the secondary isn't compromised as much playing zone.

I mean, we saw exactly that scenario play out poorly for the Jets in the Minnesota loss: he called a blitz on third and long and it ended up with Richardson trying--and failing--to catch a pass catcher downfield. Relying on the blitz when you have FIVE DL capable of putting pressure on seems like a desperate gamble when you really don't need to.

Yep, it sounds like Cutler's contract was designed to make it prohibitive for the Bears to cut Cutler. They are going to have to trade him. Here is a very informative article by Bill Barnwell on the entire situation involving Cutler. It's a mixed bag, but there's a way here for the Jets to upgrade to a mid-tier NFL Qb who can use a change of scenery:
