I've been around these boards along time. I lingered for a few years before I even signed up for an account and since I have you could probably count on your fingers the number of threads I have started. I apologize Mods that this could probably could get buried in the dozen bickering threads going on. My point is that it is really sickening to see people on these boards try and pump their chests to determine who is a "real fan" and who isn't. Let's face it. If you are still reading these boards right now - you are a fan regardless of your opinions being sensible, retarded or somewhere in between. Fans come in all shapes and sizes. Some like going to games and pay season ticket prices. That doesn't make them more of a fan than the guy who enjoys the game on his couch. Some go all out where Jets hats, shirts, Jerseys on game days etc. doesn't make them more of a fan than the guy who is just not into wearing sports gear. It doesn't matter where you stand with "win a meaningless game" or "lose for the big picture" - We are all fans and trying to discredit someone as not being one is just being an ass. The one constant the Jets seem to be able to do is divide their fan base - for me it goes back to Matt Robinson vs Richard Todd, but Pennington had his day, so did Sanchez, Billboard boy and on and on and on. Can't was all just get along and be miserable Jets fans for the holidays.
I'm gonna nip this in the bud because I can see it getting that way. If this turns into a flame war bans will be handed out.
I haven't seen many fake fan posts not sure what op is talking about, and I'm being serious. If there is a lot I guess I haven't noticed them
Lol... the thing is I can't root for the team to lose, I just can't do it but I understand the logic behind wanting to lose to improve draft position. I know there are many long time posters and even some mods who want to see us lose to get a better draft position. I know they are gluttons for the torture that is being a Jets fan just as much as I am. I don't think it makes you a fake fan if you root for them to lose, I think it makes you a gambler. I'd rather see wins, I could die tomorrow but at least I know the Jets won the last game I saw.
You don't activley root for them to lose you just don't care if they do and you don't care if they win,its a grey area and a middleground .But since we are out of the running for Mariota I will be ready to go this week and want to see us beat the Pats one more time under Rex
I think a lot of those people pretend to root for them to lose. But, in the moment, when the game is on and up for grabs, no Jets fan is actually rooting for the other team.
Oh, I know. But, my contention is that those people who were rooting against the Jets were mostly pretending. I sincerely don't think it's possible to root for a team your entire life and then start rooting against them for something as tenuous as draft position. The type of people who post on this board tend to fall into two categories: A) Die-hard Jets fans, B) Trolls who want to construct an online persona and are using this message board as a means to that end. My belief is that no one in the first category is actually rooting against the Jets.
See, but I think some of those people are actually die hard fans and are just pretending because they think it makes them seem wise, when it reality it makes them seem foolish.
I stay out of the game threads because it angers me when posters give up on the team in the first quarter, wish injury upon our players, or actively root for a loss. I get that we are a crap team, but the game threads have been this way for as long as I've been here. The OP is right - those negative posters are fans too, and they have every right to express themselves as they wish. I too have the right to choose to ignore them and stay away. It's too bad because it would be nice to have a place where Jets fans could support the team and one another on game day, but it's never going to be like that.
Not the game thread, but I was one of the posters who sarcastically wanted Geno to play (the intention being a few more pick-sixes and eventually a loss to improve our draft position). Part of it was because I just don't care about these last few games, and part was just trying to be funny. But losses do hurt, and I suppose I was happy they won in the end. So let me flip, and say I hope they give the Pats a hell of a game this week, and I will be cheering for a win.
I'm a die hard Jet fan and am not sad to see them lose right now. It's not about a draft pick to me. It's about creating the atmosphere and conditions required to initiate real and needed change. It's like if you have a friend or family member with a drug problem. You'd rather see them improve on their own, even if it means limping along not doing as well as they could be, but after it's gone on for forever and a day you might find yourself wishing they just finally hit bottom so hard that they have to finally wake the fuck up. Doesn't mean you don't care about them. Just means that, in your opinion, after you've watched the bullshit so long, that's the best way to turn it around. So call me a fake fan if you want, but I'm in this for the long hall, and the long hall needs an overhaul. If losing is what it takes to get it, I'll take it all season with a smile. And come back next year screaming like a lunatic again for my Green and White to bitch-slap Gisele's wife.
