This is one of the most Tannenbaum things I've seen posted here. So you want to pay a mediocre QB going on 32 years of age elite-level money while we get the roster squared away? Okie dokie!
Pryor is the biggest bust? I would actually say it's Clowney. Milliner can't be labeled a bust because he still hasn't played a full season.
Your logic makes no sense. Milliner can't be called a bust because he's been injured but Clowney who barely played in 4 games because of injury can be labeled a bust?
LOL, probably true. But there seems to be a formula for something like that. It will probably cost the Jets a #1 next year and possibly a #2 this year, or maybe even a good roster player. Still, this is what you have to do to rebuild a team, you have to get that guy (i.e. QB) that you feel you can build a franchise around. I'm not saying Mariota or Winston are those guys, but if you're committed to them, then that's what you have to do.
Hopefully it is the former and not the latter.....if we have to give up a good roster player then we're giving up Wilkerson, Richardson or Decker...because that's about it... And when you are trying to build you HAVE to keep the whole THREE out of 53 you have. LOL!!! I wonder if they'd take Wilson as a "good" roster player...?? Hmmmmmm LOL
Assuming we get the sixth pick...Try this year and next year's # 1 Or, our entire draft this year http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php
Which would be a helluva haul considering we'll almost definitely be a top 10 pick next year as well.
Well if the alternative is to watch a rookie QB stumble all over himself again then yeah, I'd rather have the guy who can actually play the position. Drafting the rookie to develop is fine but the Jets need a competent QB on the field next season. There's no guaranteed money in Cutler's contract after 2015. He'd be a one year premium rental with no strings attached if the Jets got him dirt cheap in a trade. I'm not a big fan of his at all and I've been much against acquiring him when the price was high. Who exactly do you want to PUT ON THE FIELD next season? It's not like competent QB's are lining the roadway looking to get picked up this off-season.
No logic necessary, I goofed. I said Clowney could be considered the biggest bust because of all the implications, basically a whole year of hype. Gets taken first overall and barely played. Staff got him for his toughness, but it looked like his knee was much more severe than origonally thought. I don't actually think he's a bust, but some people are already labeling him that. I think some people are giving up way too early on Milliner and Pryor. Milliner came in last year with an injury record and he was holding out, he came around towards the end of last year. I still think he can be good. Pryor is still trying to keep up with the NFL, he played a really good game yesterday.
Ftr when i said last week that Cutler might be the best available option at Qb for the Jets, I certainly did not mean to suggest I am a big fan of his or anything. If somehow someone better could be obtained at a reasonable price, that would be all well and good, but short of that... And as far as some saying why take someone another team doesn't want, beyond saying that means why ever trade for anyone, it's obvious to me Chicago is dealing wiht some considerations that seem to be playing into them wanting to trade him that would not apply to the Jets. Specific is their overpaying him in his current contract, and the public embarassment that is causing their FO. In short that's their problem, and actually might well play into their being willing to make a reasonable trade for him. Cutler is a mid tier Qb who is very healthy right now and has likely four or more good years left in him. His age fits better with the Jets' needs than anyone else who is likely to be available. A competent Jet GM I think could pull such a deal off, and then they could look to address other problems. No one imo has a better alternative.
You don't trade for cutler to play stop gap, that contract is too much to bare for anybody that doesn't want him as permanent answer. http://overthecap.com/player/jay-cutler/130/ 15.5 million if we traded for him, thats too damn high for a questionable player that has already been given every favorable offensive piece imaginable along WITH a favorable offense and still plays inconsistently. now if he were CUT, meh, thats better than every other option, I take him on a two year worth half as much a year. but at current price AND a draft pick or anything else? PASS.
Actually, I would trade any one of those guys if I really felt strongly enough about the QB. The hardest thing to find is that elite franchise QB. Once you have him, you can then start to build offense and defense around him. Having the next Manning, Brady, Favre (or even Luck) type QB would mean many winning seasons to come for the Jets and maybe a SB or two.
Stop being a dumb ass in each thread.... How about...without a competent NFL QB we won't sniff a playoff appearance again....how's that for realism. How about if we don't go and get a QB this year...you can damn sure guarantee there will be no playoff appearance... Oh, and insert that last statement for every single year, thereafter, that we do not get a competent QB.
The difference between me and you - I recognize there are several ways to rebuild the team. It's not the end of the world if we don't get Mariota or Winston. Stop acting like stokes - stop being over-fixated on 1 or 2 players - that's not how the draft works. We could rebuild the offense line via the draft ... go get Cutler / Bradford and if they stay healthy hell who knows how much better we play as a team. Go get some CBs. Plug some holes. The world isn't over if we don't get one of those 2 QBs
Remember...caveat that entire statement with.... "As long as John Idzik is not pulling the trigger on any of what you just described." No, it's not the end of the world...all I'm saying is we are going to be the ass end of the AFC East next year if we do not get a competent QB. Cutler or Bradford, in my opinion, are not competent. Shit...IF Bradford even makes it to the season...let alone out of it. But all that other talk...Pfffttt....yeah, John Idzik will draft 3 more Winters...so much for the O-line theory. You have to have "competent" management first.
I'm onboard on the "we need to see more out of these two before we begin to label them busts" train. Pryor took a bad angle on the play he got hurt on and then busted his ass to try to get back in the play, which is how he got hurt. I still really like his instincts and his guts in the box. Rex is using him as an edge blitzer at this point. I'd like to see the Jets try the Polamalu approach and have him sneak up right on the line and stare at the QB from 8 feet away. He doesn't have to blitz from there, the Steelers drop Polamalu in a short zone a lot of the time, but just having him there takes seconds away from the offense as they try to make the necessary adjustments. The caveat is that he may not be as quick on the ball as Polamalu is, not many are. It could be that the Steeler safety blitz only works the way it does because Polamalu is a fast guy who has no regard for his body at all.
Been thinking about this and I changed my mind, I would like Cutler here if the price is right. I know I disagreed with you on this last week - but I think if he comes here cheaper, let's see what he's got. Maybe he changes for the better after being on his 3rd team. I'd throw 2 3rd rounders to get him.
The original post makes no sense at all. First off, it's not a lock that either of the two QB's everyone wants so badly wont fall to us at 6 or 5 or wherever we will most likely be drafting. Secondly, if the Jets love one of them so much there is always the possibility of a trade. And lastly there are other QB's coming out besides just those 2. This draft is actually better suited for waiting on a QB IMO. The only QB i'd be going after in the first round is Winston anyway and he's a huge risk for obvious reasons. Just because you don't have a top 3 pick, doesnt mean you cant get a QB.
