1 TD 11 INT's in 7 starts his rookie year. 16 td's 16 INT's his 2nd year. He wasn't good at all. But I always liked Alex and I thought I was wrong about him until around 2009. But he's an anomaly.
How do you think teams find their QB? That whole bullshit about finding a QB late in the draft is rarely an occurrence. Here are a list of some of the better and best starting QBs right now: Matt Ryan - 3rd Overall Cam Newton - 1st Overall Joe Flacco - 18th Overall Jay Cutler - 11th Overall Peyton Manning - 1st Overall Matthew Stafford - 1st Overall Aaron Rodgers - 21st Overall Andrew Luck - 1st Overall Alex Smith - 1st Overall Drew Brees - 32nd Overall Eli Manning - 1st Overall Ben Roethlisberger - 11th Overall Philip Rivers - 4th Overall Now why the fuck should we pass on two very talented, very good prospects in the first round?
Im speaking for myself, I'm saying that I'm not sold on those two prospects. If it were me I'd go get a young veteran and take a mid-late round qb. You add players at other positions while your rookie and Geno sit and develop.
Geno hasn't been terrible enough to not even be this team's 3rd string QB(If the HC believes in having one). He's under contract for 2015 and unless a team buys low on him, why cut a young player after 2 years unless Geno becomes a problem in training camp/preseason and shows absolutely zero urgency or improvement ala Stephen Hill. Geno does not deserve to be the leading starter in 2015 but why not give him the opportunity to at least FIGHT for his job Week 1? Not this Vick vs Geno stuff or Geno vs Sanchez where everyone's rooting for Geno to win both times. You take Winston or Mariota or whoever, the fans, the coaches, everybody will beg for this to be Russell Wilson 2.0 and the kid to come out and ready to go. It will be on Geno to get himself into the conversation, he has 20+ starts in the league and given the veterans that will be in FA and the fact that a Hoyer or Sanchez or Bradford(Maybe) or Locker or Mallett will fight for every single penny, we have a QB with experience on the team in Geno and he comes at a cheap/reasonable cost.
Now add in all the first round misses and it makes more sense to pass, if a top guy is not there. I'm all for getting one of these guys IF he actually has the ability. I'm all for passing on them if not.
That's not the argument I'm making. Yeah, of course there are a lot of misses, but all of those makes have happened in the first round. The argument isn't that every first round pick is a starter. The argument is, you likely will not find the answer at QB in the late rounds.
I don't see how anyone can watch Mariota play and not be sold that he is destined for greatness. It is clear as day to me that he has an NFL arm, NFL athletic ability with most importantly elite intangibles and football IQ. Winston I'm more on the fence about, his INTs are a big concern. If given the green light about his off field issues though I'd probably take the chance.
Don't forget that Mariota is playing in a high powered offense similar to what Chip Kelly is doing in Philly. Not taking away from his accomplishments, but the system is tailored to him having open WR's on so many plays. That's why Sanchez has actually looked serviceable for Philly because he's been setup in a system where it's much easier for a QB's numbers to flourish. The only concern about Mariota is the one many experts bring up which is his ability to stay in the pocket, make quick reads, and hit open guys while staying in the pocket. All the other questions he's answered for me. I just want to ssee how he reacts in the pocket when he's got guys flying in his face and he needs to make quick, accurate throws. That said, I'd still take a chance on Mariota as he's the surest thing to a safe bet in this year's draft.
Which ones? The ones he is as accused of or the ones he actually committed? Walking out of publix with crab legs because a guy who works there told him to just take him on the house and yelling "fuck her right in the pussy" are really things that alarm you? Hahaha Please.
Yes. Yes they are. Those kinds of things show a total lack of self-awareness. When you are playing for the best team in the country with a chance to cement your status is the best quarterback in the country and the number one overall pick, you don't go out doing stupid shit like that.
Why is it that no other top tier NCAA athlete does shit like this? He's an idiot. On and off the field. Theres no way to argue that.
this is exactly how you stay in the middle of the pack sometimes contending for a wild card spot and sometimes picking 18th in the draft. i don't want it. i'd rather suck and draft at the top until we find the guy who can lead us to a super bowl. in the nfl and the nba the worst thing you can be is mediocre.
Idk if I'd go so far as to call him an idiot. Immature? Most definitely, but immaturity and stupidity are two entirely different things.
I'm not arguing with you. Waste of my time. You just lost any credibility by calling him an idiot on the field. Any person with any sort of football knowledge knows that is complete bullshit and your hatred for him is overlooking any form of logic in your head. You're a moron if you think he's an idiot on the field.
Your Florida St goggles don't change the fact that he has done everything possible off the field to hurt his draft stock and his play on the field hasn't helped any either.
He's an idiot on the field. He makes horrendous decisions that anyone that ISNT an idiot wouldn't make. I just learned you're a Florida State guy, which makes your opinion make a lot more sense. We are done here. You obviously can't have this conversation.
That is your opinion and this is certainly fine with me. However, I believe he is a pc of crap and I stand by that. He is well on his way to being another NFL issue - just imagine what he thinks he can get away with once he has a pocketful of money. This is a huge problem with tons of superstar HS and Collegiate players. They are sheltered and covered for, and then led to believe that they can get away with anything. And the way the University was stalling the final code of conduct decision, it is evident that they know he is guilty as hell, but just want him around long enough to win another game. While many may look at his list of incidents and may say, boys will be boys, I try to take a look at it from the side of the coin. How about all the student-athletes that simply know right from wrong, grow up with respect for others, do the right thing, and make the best of the opportunity they have in front of them?
