1) Draft a QB with the first pick and get rid of Geno or 2) Get a QB through free agency and keep Geno as a starter or backup From my understanding, these are our 2 options going into next season. Is this correct?
Not really. They could draft a QB with the first pick, try to pick up a journeyman QB, and keep Geno. They could draft a QB with the first pick, keep GEno, and that's it. They could draft a QB with the first pick, sign a vet QB, and cut Geno.
Im thinking there will be a few QB's that are starters right now that could become available trough trade or free agency. Jay Cutler is a name Ive been talking up for awhile. Yeah he isnt great. And probably wont win us a Superbowl. But he's better than anything else that could potentially be out there and could def get us to the playoffs. And realistically thats all Jets fans should want next season. He's public enemy number 1 in Chicago and we all know Woody likes to get a little splashy. To me him plus either Cooper or an olineman with our 1st pick sounds a lot better then rolling the dice with another rookie QB and then having to depend on Harvin to stay healthy. Cutler, Decker, Harvin, Cooper > Mariota/Winston, Decker, Harvin
Whether we draft QB first pick or not we won't just cut him. We could probably fetch a real late draft pick for him before we'd do that. If not Geno's going to be on the 2015 roster as a backup with experience or public enemy #1 because FO failed to find a better QB and he starts again.
They could do a bunch of things. I would like them to sign a vet AND draft a guy. Geno can be third string,I guess.
No matter what happens, even if Idzik is fired, Geno will not be outright cut. His cheap contract and valued position (despite his terrible play) makes him in asset in this league. No GM will simply cut him, even if we get both Mariota and a great veteran Qb. At worst Geno ends up as our third string next year.
I feel we should pick a QB with our first pick and develop this person properly from the bench, look for a decent veteran pick up, drop kick Vick and Geno, keep Simms as the 3rd stringer. It has been said that Geno's contract is on the cheap side....so what? He is as dumb as a rock. Buy him a new watch/phone that changes time in different zones and send him on his way.
I never wanna see Geno play another game as a Jet after this season. Right now he's our best chance to tank.
I prefer opinion 1. As bad as geno has been he does have physical talent. maybe with some time he can develop he's just not there now. I also prefer a first round pick to sit and learn for at least one season behind a seasoned guy who has a good work ethic even if not the most talented.
Sit and learn I'm a big fan of. And same on Geno. Whatever, he probably stinks. But if we get an offensive minded HC, maybe he beats out the vet starts a handful of games and then the rookie takes over. Who knows how it works, but there's not monetary advantage to getting rid of Geno, so keep him
Geno isn't the starter next season but he's on the team. I'd sign a good vet FA Qb to be the starter.
It'd be insanely dumb to cut Geno. That's the kind of move that gets GMs fired for good reason. Keep him as a backup. He's young, he knows the system.
Yeah we've gone through the growing pains with a developmental Qb. He's shown no consistency yet after well over 20 starts. I'd keep him as backup next season. He can start games if called upon. But his overall stats are among the lowest of Qbs all time. But as I recall Alex Smith was worse his first two years and now he's a good starting Qb.
Geno still has 2 years on his rookie contract. I'd take him over Simms as the backup any day of the week.
You can't go into 2015 with Geno penciled in as the starter. Even if he plays well the rest of the season. This is what happened last year.
My Chrystal ball says the QBs for the NY Jets next year will be: Sam Bradford or Jay Cutler, Geno Smith, and J. Winston. Of course its heavily dependent on who the GM/HC will be.
