I agree - it's very alarming. I can't wait for the Rose Bowl game - I think it's going to tell us a lot about Winston
Bringing in someone like RGIII also depends upon who is the coach. It has to be someone VERY well established and can get into RGIII's grill and tell him how it is and this is his last chance to be anybody in the NFL etc... A lot of factors have to come in line for us to bring in a guy like RGIII. In his case I'd also get "buy in" from some of my veteran leaders that you know will be around next year because there's that locker room dynamic as well.
Yeah, should have mentioned that the right coaching staff have to be in place. No way in a million years would I go near RGIII, or another rookie for that matter, if Rex is still here.
If Winston comes into the NFL thinking that winning all the games in college lets him do whatever he wants he's going to turn into an outrageous bust.
Does anybody think RGIII is going to be a good QB in the absence of the read-option? The read-option that is off the table for him in the NFL due to his fragile knees?
Yep, he might even get us to 7-6 like he has the Bills. The Bills btw have a top 10 talent base in the NFL right now. 7-6. It's all about the QB.
I don't know why any Jet fan would want Winston you guys mentioned his on the field problems but his off the field issues are the worst. If I was someone like Tampa then sure I wouldn't mind taking a risk but in New York there's absolutely no way I'd take him. It would be best for him and the Jets if they don't join together.
I agree - I think he wants to be great, but the off the field issues will distract him. I truly do not believe in any of the QBs in this draft. They are so hard to read.
I'm anti mariotta at this point. You have to keep in mind the offense he is playing in, it's the same thing I said about geno. How many Oregon offense qbs have become good in the nfl recently? None. Sorry, not buying him.
Mariotta will probably be the first player drafted. Which means the Jets would have to trade up to get him. And give up probably in addition to their pick next year's number one if not more. I wouldn't do it. Winston will be there but I don't take this guy. He will probably drop to the mid or later first round. If I'm the Jets I trade down if there's a deal and build up the O-line. Or get that Alabama receiver if he's rated in the top five.
You have either not seen Mariota play or you didn't see Geno play in college. Different players by a wide margin. Comparing them is silly. Completely irrelevant. Again, it appears you have not seen him play. I'm not sure where the mantra started that great QBs can only come out of certain schools and if a school hasn't turned out a recent great QB then it is precluded from turning out a great QB. Illogical. Maybe we should just draft only a QB from schools that have turned out great QBs in the last 10-15 years. . Like Cal. Wisconsin. Tennessee. Michigan. Stamford. Miami (not the U, Miami Univeristy in Ohio), Purdue, Boston College, NC State, Eastern Illinois. Maybe U Del. Yeah, lets go get a QB out of Delaware. _
I'm not comparing the players, Mariotta will be better than Geno but that's not saying much. Geno Smith made his name off of one game, one game where he had 600+ yards. A one week sensation is what put his name on the map. No one would have even cared about geno heading into the draft if it weren't for that game combined with his hot start. As for mariotta, I am not rooting against him. But I have seen college offenses inflate stat and make qbs appear as something they arent. Geno was the perfect example, was dumping it off and getting huge plays which maximized his stats. When you look at Oregon offense, it has not created any nfl starting qbs which is a red flag, add the fact that mariotta will not be in that offense if he came here in all likely hood. From a physical standpoint mariotta has it but it's still far from a safe pick, so unfortunately I cannot endorse it.
You just contradicted yourself. Mariota is not throwing shovel passes to the likes of Austin and Bailey who are taking them 80 yards for TDs. Mariota is not doing that. The guy is making throws all over the field on first second third reads, from the pocket, on the run, tight windows--he's doing it all. Geno didn't do that. Because he is in an offense that isn't a pro style offense does not mean he can NOT play in one, it only means he hasn't been asked to. The guy has physical skills that dwarf Geno's and an Einstein brain compared to Geno's Peter Griffin brain. What college offense is churning out pro ready QBs that are actually any good? Because a school may turn out someone who has a bit of experience in a pro style offense does not mean those guys are any good. It sounds to me you want an inferior player out of a school or a system rather than a superior player who will have a quick learning curve. Seriously, what school should we pick a QB out of? Ohio State? Texas A & M? Which version--Johhny Manziel or Ryan Tannehill? Mississippi State? Baylor? How great is RG3 and btw, Bryce Petty is a completely different player. You want Blake Sims out of Alabama? FSU? When was the last good QB to come out of FSU? You'd pass on Winston because of Chris Weinke or Charlie Ward or Casey Weldon or Danny Kannel or Christian Ponder? Look at the PLAYER and not the school or system. _
Mel Kiper said there isn't a franchise qb in Winston or Mariotta ,If you put any stock into what he says
Mel Kiper Jr. also said Jamarcus Russell was "Elway-like." Our QB situation is fucked.. We won't eve sniff the playoffs for years to come.....
Ok let me clarify my earlier post (I wrote it on a phone while on break so I was in a hurry), I was not trying to say imply that Mariotta dumps passes off like Geno did. He clearly doesn't, I am not even going to mention Geno anymore because thats honestly disrespecting Mariotta. Mariotta can clearly make all the throws, he is 6'4 and has ability, but he is playing in the Oregon offense, the same Oregon offense that the NFL defenses cannot figure out, so if NFL defenses can't figure it out, you cannot expect college coaches to coach college players (who are students) to learn how to defend the Oregon offense in one week...so Mariotta has been able to pick apart college defenses but picking apart NFL defenses is much more difficult, ESPECIALLY if he is not in that fast paced offense that does not allow the defense to get ready and make adjustments between snaps. At the end of the day though, picking QBs is like throwing darts at a dart board. Few locks, Mariotta is far from a lock, but if the Jets want to take him, go for it (but get the right coach in here first).
The other option is to not draft a QB, the Jets shouldn't draft a QB in the first round if they are not confident in either guy..... (this franchise is in such a hole, we probably are looking at another losing season next year).
I've learned to ignore all these so called "experts" and their dumb ass opinions. No one knows what these guys will be like in the NFL. NO ONE! I don't give a fuck how long you have been around football or how well you know the game. It is all speculation and nothing more. There have been so many players that worked out to be the complete opposite of what almost every "expert" claimed. Brady and Russell Wilson. They said Drew Brees would never be good because of his injury. Many thought RG3 was gonna be amazing. The list goes on and on.
So if Mariota is playing in an offense that NFL defenses can't figure out, and he excels at that offense, we shouldn't take him. Sounds like a logical plan. _
