I respectfully disagree. They don't have to have proven yet that they are franchise QBs. I saw Stokes' comments in the draft forum and he said the same things before the draft ever happened. I was totally with him on Bridgewater, a little less so on Garoppalo, and even less on Carr, but I thought the Jets should have taken one of them. There were a number of WRs that I and others wanted in this past draft so to say that the Jets should have taken them now is not cherry picking. I wanted Cooks, Beckham, Evans or Mathews. I believe that all will become very good, very productive WRs in the NFL if not stars, and better than anyone the Jets have had at the position in a long time. Normally, I'd agree with your bolded sentence, but not this year. When Geno was still a huge question mark and we at least needed a backup QB for the future and with such a HUGE needs at WR, TE, OLB and CB and S, not to mention the OL. Who did we really come away with? I liked Pryor and would have been happy we got him were it not at the expense of one of the QBs or WRs I mentioned. I didn't want Amaro, but he looks like he might be pretty good if he learns to block. Having a draft with 12 picks gives a GM a chance to radically improve his roster and improve his team both in the short and long term. Right now, any improvements look marginal. Screwing the pooch on a 12 player draft is criminal and will hurt this team much more than overpaying for DRC or some other vet FA CB.
That's ok, we're all just guessing here and there are no guarantees in the draft. But nothing about what I've said is hindsight about the QBs. We could have had Teddy or Carr who I have viewed as franchise type QBs WAY before the draft--like YEARS before the draft. Instead we have Calvin Pryor. _
Again, all just guessing but I think in time you will find that Carr will be light years better than Geno--because of his football IQ. Sure Carr has a better arm and is more athletic and more accurate, but he's a football genius compared to Geno. Garappolo I just don't know. Time will tell. _
Because we're sitting at 5-8 this same time last year and went 3-0. That meaningless win streak cost us most this past draft. Giants go 7-9 and end up with the 12th pick. We would've had ODB no doubt he's who we were targeting going into draft day. I'm not sure what Franchise QB we missed out on..Carr looks best so far but none of these guys are locks. Hindsight we could've used the Pryor pick on QB but I doubt any graded out much higher than Geno did the year prior and it doesn't even matter. Our team is so bad league average QB play wouldn't have us more than 5-11, 6-10. Was Idzik supposed to draft Johnny Football/Bridgewater and have them fail too? To sink a 2nd and then your 1st the following year to get two below average starters would make him look even worst now.
I don't think you understand how the narrative works here. Unless they are mortal locks to be HOFers, you're not allowed to talk about them being franchise QBs. +100000 _
That's my opinion, yes. We're all GUESSING. Nobody knows anything for sure. You want to wait till they are lock franchise QBs to call them that, or assert they aren't franchise QBs until they've locked it up for you, go right ahead. There are no locks. It's a red herring. _
You say this in like every post lol. It's like hedging against yourself in case your incorrect. I agree though, I like Carr and Bridgewater. I like their odds of becoming average-above average starters in the NFL.
Carr has looked great sometimes this year, sometimes he's looked terrible. Same with Bridgewater. Neither are as turnover prone as Geno and better prospects but they're "No Locks" because they're no locks to even be starters in 2 seasons. Carr and Bridgewater have rookie seasons to build off of but not enough growth next season would make both franchises consider other options. I will say Carr's future looks a lot brighter with a Harbaugh signing/Trade from Oakland.
He very well could be although he hasn't shown the same potential as Bridgewater and Carr. There are different levels/tiers of "franchise quarterbacks". The basic definition is that he's your starting qb and the guy your offense is built around. You don't have to be elite to be a franchise qb. Alex Smith is a franchise qb and he's considered a game manager.
It sucks that the draft was so bad, and personally, I didn't like Pryor or Amaro as our picks even, but a wasted draft is exactly that. You get another shot the next year. That's the beauty of it, you get another chance. It'd be nice to be able to find solid players in every draft, and the best teams are able to do that, but I'm not going to kill a GM for screwing up a draft unless it looks like a bad habit. This year I think you give him a chance to redeem himself. He also has to rely on his scouting department, and if these are the guys they're suggesting, then the problem is down below as well (which I think it is anyway). Bad FA signings come back to haunt you for years because you blew money on a player that wasn't worth it, and you can't allocate those funds elsewhere. That's why I'm not thrilled with what he's done, but with the cap savings we have, he has a chance to rectify it. Granted, all that being said, the rookie cap is his saving grace, and that's the reason the draft doesn't kill you like it used to. Just my opinion. All comes down to dollars, and because the draft is now a cheap way to stockpile talent, I'm holding out hope that he's able to stockpile talent this time haha.
No, I'm not hedging anything. I'm just saying that I don't KNOW what's going to eventually happen, it's just my forward looking opinion. Too often folks here say "I KNEW blahblahblah". Nobody "knows" shit. I loved Teddy and Carr, but if they were out of the league in 3 years, I just guessed wrong. I think Mariota is going to be the next Rodgers. He may end up sucking. For example, Manziel is either going to be a superstar or a massive bust. Nobody has any idea either way. But I''l bet you whatever happens--someone is going to come on here beating their chest out saying "I KNEW IT!!!" _
This is a results business. After two years we are 10-19 and counting. We have only 2 of the 19 draft picks he's selected that are actually worth a damn, his Free Agent signing's have mostly been major misses and miscalculations. What exactly has he done to warrant year number 3?
And I guess my point is, as a franchise so bereft of talent at that position, to have passed on guys who (IMHO) were potential franchise guys without the benefit of hindsight really chapped my ass, but now with the benefit of hindsight looks like they could be pretty good prospects to build around. Folks are now casting aspersions towards Mariota--"I'm shaky on him at best" blahblahblah. He's no "lock" they say. Like there ever was a "lock" other than Luck and Peyton. But in my view, how do you not take the gamble and do everything you can do to get the guy? _
