So...at this point I think we can pretty much ascertain that Geno Smith is not going to be a starting QB for the NY Jets...or shouldn't be...at least...in this system. And if Geno can't excel in a West Coast offense...then what can he excel at? He's certainly no long ball guy so his vertical game is suspect...where does he fit? What system? Who knows.... Having said that, we are back to square 1 and looking at a top 5 pick in the draft. Everyone says QB...but do we REALLY want to draft a QB? That is laughable!!!!! Compare that to a few other QB's...a couple HOF guys and a young guy and old guy and you get Tom Brady 158 - 46, Peyton Manning 177 - 76, Andrew Luck 31 - 14, Phil Simm 95 - 64! All well over .500! I dug further and just figured it was a waste of space to place Andy Dalton, Drew Brees, Joe Flacco etc...etc... in here. Again, all well over .500! Dalton is at 37 - 22 -1!!! That is simply DISGUSTING! I went digging further and eff'n Mark Brunell had a 63-54 record on a damn expansion team!! I don't know HOW I feel about the NY Jets drafting a QB in the top 5...almost think I'd rather we got a o-lineman...at least we do ok with those. Pretty sickening and sobering statistics if you ask me. Oh, and for those Mark Sanchez haters..."Mark" it down...he is almost the best pure winning QB the Jets have EVER had. Vinny T. was 35 - 26 while in Green and White. Take that to the bank... Pretty damn eye opening if you ask me!
They should only take a QB in the first round if that player grades highest among all players available. It is unfair to assume that because previous GM's QB picks failed that the next GM will likewise fail. Browning Nagle has nothing to do with Marcus Mariotta.
The Jets of the 1960s are different from the Jets of the 1970s, 80s, 90s, etc. We have historically been bad at drafting Qbs, yes, but generalizing "the Jets" creates faulty causal logic. Instead, it would be better to look at individuals who are in charge of drafting decisions: namely Bradway and Idzik. If Idzik is still around, he has drafted one Qb so far and it hasn't worked out. Bradway has drafted a number of Qbs as well, many of whom weren't successful. But to say that we shouldn't draft a Qb because we have been bad historically is ludicrous. We may have a different GM who will make this decision. Even if we don't, it doesn't come down to the Jets historically, but rather how we feel about our current scouting dept.
You are right my man...but geezzzussss....50 years and we've hit on 3?? That's through 2 owners...do we simply have shitty GM picking ability...thus shitty QB picking ability? It's absolutely uncanny. As I sit back and think about it only the Cleveland Browns have had similar luck in drafting QB's...oh and the Cardinals from what I've found.
4 - Sanchez, Nagel, Todd (number 6) and Namath...1st overall... Another 2 or 3 were 1st rounders...just ugly...
It hasn't mattered what era, GM or Owner over that span of 50 years...we just simply seem to not draft well in the QB department. Oddly enough when you compare it to my aforementioned comments about O-Line, as well as Defense, we are historically GOOD at the draft. The NY Jets may have one of the best track records in drafting defensive talent across that span in the league. We are certainly in the Steelers, Raiders, Baltimore conversation on Defense.
I can't stress enough how badly the Jets need to go in an offensive minded direction. That alone wont just solve our problem, but it will help put us in the best position to develop a QB. Give me a coach, preferably with prior experience who knows the offensive side of the football.
This is all I can hope for...and PRAY we snap our string of shit! Where in the hell is the NY Jets version of Tom Brady or Andrew Luck....as I mentioned before...HELL I'll take an Andy Dalton!!!!
Don't stop drafting QB's until we've got the right guy I say. Especially if we're in a good position to get a top guy. QB is the most important position in the game, more so than ever in todays NFL.
It is definitely worth considering picking up an experienced QB, vs drafting one...HOWEVER, lets see who's running the show first.

See...I CAN agree with this...draft one every year until one sticks! Period. Doesn't necessarily have to be a 1st rounder... I just worry that we might waste a top 5 pick on someone who will not pan out at the QB position. Just call me "skittish" on this one.
You're certainly right about that. I think the Jets are tied for the most DROY once Sheldon Richardson secured the title last year. Yet defense can only bring us so far without a Qb.
I only pray that whoevers the HC and whoevers calling the shots in the "War Room"'next spring realizes this as well.
No, this is the pick you gamble on--the top of the draft pick QB THIS year. Take a guy in the 4th round every year would generally just be throwing away a pick. If you had a top 5 pick in 2013, you don't use it. If you have a top 5 pick in 2016, you don't use it. It's all about Mariota and Winston--two worthy guys that you HAVE to gamble on in the hopes that we finally hit on it. It's ok to have slight concerns about the two--neither is Luck. But they're pretty damn close. If we don't get one of these guys we may not be in this position again for a while (top 5 pick with potential franchise QBs available). If the guy we take busts, at least we made the attempt on a worthy guy. The reward to risk is stacked in our favor this year. _
