This draft may still produce a few good NFL players, but our scouting department needs to be over-hauled. 12 picks in this past draft (loaded w/ talent according to experts), in the 4th rd we pick Saunders @ 104 & Evans @ 115, Steelers grab a stud from Clemson #118 Bryant, Rex's son gave us the low-down on Boyd, but not the WR.....our drafting for years has been consistently weak!
I don't know if it's the scouting. The scouts just provide their analysis of different players, but it's the GM, coaching staff, and Bradway who make decisions based on that. If I had to guess, I would say most of our recent drafting problems are on Rex and his staff, mostly because we saw Tanenbaum draft with Mangini, and it turned out pretty well, but then once Rex came aboard, suddenly our drafts took a nosedive, and it hasn't improved significantly so far with Rex and Idzik, although too early to tell. Rex has been the major constant for 6 years: 2009: Sanchez + Greene + Slauson 2010: Wilson + Ducasse 2011: Wilkerson + Ellis 2012: Coples + Hill + Davis 2013: Milliner + Richardson + Geno + Winters 2014: Pryor + Amaro + McDougle That's a pretty bad record over 6 years, especially 2009-10, where we got nothing. Given what we know about Rex and his fun-loving ways, would anyone be surprised if he and his coaching staff did not spend as much time on viewing college players' game tape and looking for little things as some of the other coaches in the league? And then some of the bad decisions seem to be related to Rex directly, like drafting that guy for Sanchez, drafting Boyd because he played with his son, drafting Pryor (who wasn't a bad pick per se coming out of college) who was more of a SS when our need was much more for a FS just because Rex likes to play 2 SSs.
i don't think rex watches less tape as other coaches. i just don't think he runs a system/promotes a culture for rookies to learn and develop. he leans on his vets and leaves it up to the rookies to keep up on their own. obvious speculation of course, but its an easy jump when looking at the arc of his tenure here
There are like 128 Division 1 college football teams, we should try to crowd source the jets picks next season and see if we can do a better job. I'm almost sure I could narrow the picks down based on NFL trends and then throw darts and end up drafting better than we have the past 5 years or so.
Its not the scouting. If Bryant was here he wouldnt be doing what he's doing in Pittsburgh. Because Antonio Brown wouldnt be playing opposite him and Big Ben wouldnt be throwing him the ball. This needs to stop. Imagine Amaro on a team with an actual QB.
Bradway needs to go. I don't even care about the pick-for-pick analysis. He needs to go for optics. Woody can't half-ass the blowup this time, and the symbol of his history of half-ass change is our former GM hidden in the background still having Woody's ear.
It's amazing to me how Rex doesn't give Quinton Coples more playing time. The Jets ran 60 defensive plays this week. Coples saw 40 snaps Pace saw 51 Babin saw 59 Calvin Pryor saw 38 while Jaiquan Jarrett saw 59. Babin has played well this year but the guy doesn't have a longterm future with this team. Coples was the 16th pick in the draft, Pryor was a top draft pick, these guys need to be on the field. Coples has been up and down so far in his career, this season is a great opportunity to get a good long look at him and decide what you want his role to be going forward. This is why in lost seasons where we know it's going to cost Rex his job it actually wouldn't have been a terrible idea to remove him and put somebody else in to run the team, give him his marching orders, and let him coach so we can evaluate some of these guys. Rex is still trying to win games which is understandable. But the Jets aren't getting anything out of watching the 34 and older club hog up all the snaps when they could be going to younger guys who you need to make a decision on. The Jets aren't getting anything out of Geno Smith throwing the ball 13 times against Miami, there not getting anything out of Chris Johnson playing much more than Bilal Powell. Give the Giants credit, they think Andre Williams is their future at RB, the season is over, Williams carried the rock 24 times while Jennings only touched it once, granted he was a game time decision to even play but still.
This is one thing I have to side with the Jets on. Not in firing Bradway, that has to happen immediately. But how do you fire the entire scouting department so close to the draft? Besides last time I checked the scouts do all crap work going all around the country to places like Appalachian State. Probably to produce a scouting report on Vince Young 2.0. How does firing a guy who takes the measurements at the combine make us better. Now if they make bad reports ..... Fire away!
I think historically we have drafted really badly in the late rounds. I always thought our scouting department sucks, I don't understand the logistics behind getting a better scouting department but it always seems like with the jets we either hit it miss on rounds 1/2 rest is a wash.
since Bradway has been part of the organization we have drafted the following mind-late round players: Jonathan Goodwin(who Jet fans HATED when he was here by the way) Erik Coleman Derrick Ward Joel Dreesen Drew Coleman Kerry Rhodes Leon Washington Brad Smith Dwight Lowery Matt Slauson Bilal Powell Jeremy Kerley the #s went down when Tannenbaum took over b/c he traded a lot of picks but this notion that we have drafted terribly for a long time is false. we aren't the Packers obviously but we aren't the Dick Steinberg Jets.
Ward, drieesan, both colemans weren't good. Smith was a system player in wild cat. Rhodes,Washington and slauson were solid. Powell and kerley to be determined. I do think kerley could be Excellant. When was lowery taken? He was solid I thought a mistake to let him go years ago. Look at that over the course of time. What does that avg out to. How many contributors are w The jets finding in late rounds? I'm not meaning this to be argumentative. I just think over the course of time the organization is eithor incredibly unlucky in kate rounds or doing a poor job.
Ward was good, was a 1,000 yd back. Dreesen became a solid NFL TE Erick Coleman was a quality safety Drew Coleman a good nickel/dime back Smith helped us win a lot of games. Powell is a quality player, Kerley is a good player Lowery was a 4th rd pick.
Disagree somewhat n skill levels of players but not that far off. Here my question. Since your going as far back as ward.. How many quality players have we found in later rounds in the past 15 years? I'm not placing total blame cause I do also think it's a crap shoot.. They just may be unlucky too
I didn't include Idzik late rounders b/c it's still too early to tell but 15 years would include 1999 and 2000 added to the list I gave you: Ryan Young (Parcells was a terrible w/ our drafts)
That's kind of my point. I can't remember a time in history were we hit a home run in the draft.. We always seemed poor at it.
