The Jets need a franchise QB. I just want to show everyone HOW DIFFICULT it is to find one. OUT of 21 QBs, I give only 8 a positive ranking and that includes (Newton, Bradford & Tannehill, the 3 have issues) Don't be ready to make Mariota & Winston franchise savers. My point is if you find the right QB, makes sure you have quality players to help develop the QB and the right coaching staff. Remember, at least 60% of the 1st Rd QBs won't be significant players. Left out 2014 QBs 2013 #16 EJ Manuel 2012 #1 Andrew Luck ....Best QB of the group #2 RGIII #8 Ryan Tannehill......I won't grade negative yet #22 Brandon Weeden 2011 #1 Cam Newton...giving benefit of the doubt, needs to improve. #8 Jake Locker #10 Blaine Gabbert #12 Christian Ponder 2010 #1 Sam Bradford.....Bad luck with injuries, incomplete #25 Tim Tebow 2009 #1 Matthew Statford.....Solid QB #5 Mark Sanchez.......The Team makes the difference #17 Josh Freeman 2008 #3 Matt Ryan.....Good QB with a team with an awful defense #18 Joe Flacco......Dull, but very effective 2007 #1 Jamarcus Russell #22 Brady Quinn #2006 #3 Vince Young #10 Matt Leinart #11 Jay Cutler......Up and down, mostly down .
Total red herring argument. You should look at only the Luck and Ryan/Flacco drafts as appropriate comps. Just because crappy QBs were drafted in weak QB years is not an analogous argument for this year. If Mariota and Winston were not in this draft I'd agree with you 100% because Hundley and Petty and Prescott (if he comes out) and maybe Grayson would get drafted in round 1 and you'd have a draft full of mediocre QBs. Like 2011. Comparing Mariota and Winston to Young, Cutler, Leinart, Russell, Quinn, Freeman, Sanchez, Stafford, Tebow, Bradford, Ponder, Locker, Gabbert, Weeden, Tannehill and Manuel is insulting. _
Slow down Man! You need to chill! I never compared players. I just showed how many QBs that are recently drafted in Round 1 don't pan out.....you're making assumptions on my behalf that aren't true about Mariota and Winston.
LOL!! I do agree with You that players like Grayson could get pushed up into Rd 1 based on need, but that is poor drafting (decision making) on that team's part. I really like Winston and how he plays, his game is more NFL ready than Mariota, I just can't get over his lack of maturity off the field, call me old school. Mariota is just a great Kid that can develop under the right system, in the "New NFL".
And now let's look at some other QBs taken in the first round: Peyton Manning Aaron Rodgers Ben Roethlisberger Philip Rivers Matt Ryan Andrew Luck Eli Manning Chad Pennington Matthew Stafford Cam Newton Joe Flacco Jay Cutler Alex Smith
You can double that list in the last 14 years with Rd 1 QBs that sucked, since you went back to the year 2000.
Let's also remember that drafting a first round bust won't put a franchise back 5 years like it used to. Since rookies are much cheaper and they can be benched and cut without financial ruin to a team, it might be worth taking more chances earlier in the draft than it used to be. Yes, finding a franchise QB is difficult. But if a scouting dept truly feels that a certain player can/will become that franchise player, they shouldn't hesitate to draft him as soon as possible.
Agreed. I'm just pointing out that success is relative. An average Qb would be a wonderful addition to this team.
