I have been lurking around the forums but never posted anything due to my poor grammar skill. Now after Jets being 2-10, internet bully could not make it any worse. . Granted, I have absolutely zero idea what would happen inside the Jets Brass and NFL movements during this off-season period, but I did it on a whim. Jets Departures: * Rex Ryan - Titans DC. He replaced Ray Horton, who accepted the head coaching job with Oakland Raiders, as Titans' defensive coordinator. * Marty Mornhinweg - Colts OC. Pep Hamilton vacanted the position for head coach gig with New York Jets. Mornhinweg wasted no time to find a decent job at Indianapolis. New regime that seeks to fracture the "Same Old Jets" curse completely. * General Manager - Ryan Pace, Saints' director of player personnel. * Head Coach - Pep Hamilton, Colts' offensive coordinator. * Offensive Coordinator - Lane Kiffin, Alabama OC. * Defensive Coordinator - Don Martindale, Ravens' ILB coach. GM Pace has accustomed to Sean Payton's heavy passing offense but he passed on Chad Chudzinski, Norv Turner and Pete Carmichael Jr. for Pep Hamilton's balanced WCO. Because the offense has been dismayed, Jets hired another legitimate offensive minded coach in Kiffin. Surely, Hamilton and Kiffin have different egos but Hamilton should not do double duty and let Kiffin ride the offense out. Martindale was Broncos' defensive coordinator for Josh McDaniels in 2010. Browns tried to hire him to be Mike Pettine's DC. This may suggest that he knows Rex Ryan defensive philosophy and Jets would love to continue having this kind of defense with their formidable defensive linemen. That means Jets are running the similar offense and defense as 2014 but under different tone of coaching staffs. That is completely different from what GM Ryan Pace had grown up working with Saints. Thus, it won't happen in real life. However, I always go after someone with personnel and college directing background instead of someone with salary management because it does not matter what system a team plans to utilize as long as you understand what needs to be done from players to make system work. Top 4 Free Agent Signings: # CB Chris Harris, Jr., Broncos.(Currently negotiation with the team) # OLB Jason Pierre-Paul, Giants.(Back surgery) # OT Michael Roo, Titans. (Knee surgery) # QB Jake Locker, Titans. (Benched) Jets aggressively sealed the deal with Harris. Next three were occurred during the waiting and seeing period after they unsuccessfully brought OLB Justin Houston and QB Sam Bradford in. Roo got a pillow contract. Roo should be healthy enough to play RT with Breno Giacomini moving inside. Locker and JPP have a shot to have a solid career with this second chance. Hopefully, Harris does not regress at all. Maybe it is unimpressive signings but there is difficult to know whether or not Jets actually strike it gold on 5 players. Re-Signings: # ILB David Harris # CB Phillip Gaines # CB Josh Thomas Harris' signing may be good for a couple seasons. Both CBs are brought in so Jets won't draft any CB as they could address on other positions. Trade Progressions: # Jets matched Browns' offer sheet on NT Damon Harrison. # WR Percy Harvin's 2015 salary was picked up. (4th Round Pick going to Seahawks) # Jets traded QB Geno Smith to 49ers for 6th Round Pick. # Saints rejected the trade offer for QB Ryan Griffin. Jets obviously won't let Harrison go just for another 1st round pick. Jets brought Harvin back to be Kiffin's weapon. 49ers repeated the QB Brian Gabbert trade on Smith. GM Pace had seen Griffin practice to know he could be a good NFL qb but Saints' HC and GM were not ready to cut loose on Griffin until they had better talent on the roster. Draft 3 Rounds: 1.5- WR Kevin White, West Virginia. 2.36- QB Garrett Grayson, Colorado State. 3.67- FS Cody Prewitt, Ole Miss. White simply has better measurables than WR Amari Cooper and Jets won't take any chance on waiting until the talent in WR pool gets thinner. Decker and Harvin are a good addition but they are good for one by one season contract. Decker, Harvin, Kerley, Amaro and White as receiving group should be much better for any quarterback. Jets missed out on Brett Hundley so they went to next best quarterback available. Grayson may need time to get ready to roll in NFL level. Locker and Simms or whoever has better resume than Simms should be top 2 to kick off the season. Don't rush him like they did with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. Prewitt should solve the FS problem. I can't imagine Pryor continue playing FS. I hope his instinct is superb because he lacks closing speed. Day 3 Draft: # LB Maurice Falls, East Carolina. # OLB Jermauria Rasco, LSU. # RB Tyler Varga, Yale. # WR Cam Worthy, East Carolina. Falls may be similar to KJ Wright. He could play either ILB or OLB or edge for Martindale. Rasco is excellent at run support but could rack up a decent number of qb pressures. Varga is junior so I don't know if he actually goes pro but man, he is so good at changing direction (shifty like 190 pounder at 230). Worthy's possession skill could come in handy.
Hey, why not? For all intents and purposes, the offseason is upon us. No outstanding problem with the hires there. Definitely want a GM with a proven track record of scouting and a coaching staff that implements a more QB-friendly system. JPP would be an interesting signing and I'd like it at the right price, but his production has been down in recent years and I wouldn't want to overpay for him and especially given that he'd be learning a new position. Maybe someone like Brian Orakpo on a 1 or 2 year deal is another option. Can't complain with getting Harris and I guess Locker wouldn't be the worst choice, but that pretty much leaves him as the starter next year. I see that in your scenario we miss out on Bradford, who would probably be my top choice. Interesting idea to sign Roos and move Giacomini inside... Roos was apparently still playing at a high level before his injury, but he'll be 33 next year coming off that injury and I'd like to get younger at OT. Another interesting call with Kevin White over Cooper... I'd have to look more into his game to make a call on that one. I am a fan of DeVante Parker though. Draft makes some sense, but I don't feel great about another safety being brought in. I'd like to see if the trio of Pryor, Allen and Jarrett can get it done.
There is absolutely no way the Jets draft Kevin White with the 5th overall pick. I think there are 2 receivers that are better than him in Cooper and Strong. Pep Hamilton is nothing more than a product of Andrew Luck. What makes you believe he's an NFL HC? Not hating on your thread, good stuff putting it together but some are pretty mind-blogging
Very well thought out post, I think Rex might take a TV deal though. Not sold on Pep Hamilton to be a HC. I also don't want Lane Kiffin running our offense, he's got a good gig at Bama don't see him running to the Jets. as for your draft, Kevin White will not be the pick. I rank 3 receivers before him: Cooper, Strong, Parker. I also don't like the Prewitt pick, good player but he's a FS and plays a similar style to Pryor. Also don't think he makes it to round 2. Grayson I could get on board with, if we miss Mariota. It's a second round pick so if he starts and were in a similar draft position next year we could take Cook or Hackenberg. Forgot to address your FA pick ups. JPP while very athletic and explosive is very hot and cold, plus I think he resigns with the NYG. Roos is a solid signing. Not a fan of Locker at all, but it's a move I could see us making. I wouldn't bring Harris back unless he comes cheap.
Appreciate the comments. Just because I did not include $$$ does not mean I had Jets overpaid certain player(s). The overpayment usually is good for free agent from other teams. Not their own player. Pep Hamilton is one of hot commodities for head coaching capacity right now. Many coaches in NFL have suffered one time successful quarterback syndrome so it is pointless to discount Hamilton because of Luck. He has managing and coaching skills that make many teams to covet to him.
if cleveland is willing to give up their 1st for harrison we take that pick, no brainer. call oakland and offer the 5th and cleveland 1st to try to get up for the duck.
Don't hate the whole thread but Garrett Grayson is not a going to be a quality NFL starting QB. A waste of a second round pick. _
OR we could fill two needs in the first. Cooper and a linemen like Stanley, Peat, Ogbuehi, Sambrailo.
I played at Yale. Varga is a senior. I would love to get him on the jets. Dude is a load to bring down.
I'm thinking twice on that offer if Cleveland misses the playoffs. Getting Cooper and potentially Winston would be really intriguing. I know Winston is a headache, but those 2 could really change the offense going forward.
This is a nicely laid out post... like the format of it, creative. However i think these moves would lead us to another year of no playoffs. We need to be more aggressive than that in free agency. I don't like that 1st draft pick at all either.
omg that would be the greatest thing to happen to us since... ever. Cleveland probably would have a pick too low for either one of those guys though
If the Jets could get two firsts that would be awesome. That could hopefully get them Mariota and a top of the line OT prospect. I dont think I would trade the extra first just to move up a few spots.
No. Barnes douzable and ellis rotating in with coples mo and rich would still be a nice dline. i think we would play more 4 down linemen though
Oh crap! I totally forget about Falcons' OC Dirk Koetter. He could be perfect for Ryan Pace. Problem on Koetter is he is too dumb to improve OL. Need to hire a legitimate OL coach to make it work. If Falcons actually clean the house then Glenn Thomas could join with him as OC. Otherwise, Terry Robiskie may be brought in for that title.
