I've read a bunch of posts calling out "fake" fans who are rooting for the Jets to lose. Well, I would never root for them to lose. But I sure as hell aren't rooting for them to win. And don't dare call me a fake fan. I became a Jets fan because of that Superbowl in 1969. I saw Namath at Hofstra as a 10 year old. I was done at that point. I've been through thin and thinner with them for decades. I became a STH in 2000. I go to every game. I go to at least one road game every year and sometimes 2. I made all 4 of my kids miserable Jet fans. My dearly departed wife grew up a Giant fan and I converted her to a Jet fan within a few years of getting married. My GF grew up a Giant fan and I converted HER into a Jet fan within the first year of us dating. Hell, I even named my golden retriever Penny after Chad way back in 2002. I'm as real a fan as it gets. But I am not rooting for them to win these games. Last week was the perfect example. We played hard, I rooted for individual players to play well. I never rooted for Miami to score or stop us or play well, but at the end of the game, that FG did not upset me. At this point, it's not about winning a meaningless game and having a vacuous feeling of euphoria. It's fleeting and ultimately futile. Folks want to argue that moving down a few draft slots is ok because once in a while an 8th pick turns out better than a 4th pick is just naive. Having a higher pick in round 1 and EVERY round throughout the draft is infinitely more important than winning a meaningless game. Slight difference but it helps me rationalize with my fandom. _
Were the Colts fans fake fans for wanting to lose a few years ago? I dont think so. They realized sacrificing one year could make them contenders for the next 15. I have no problems if Jets fans feel that way. What if Mariota or Winston are the next Luck?
As I wrote yesterday, every Jets fan left is a "true" fan. There are no more bandwagoners. No more fair weather fans and certainly no more Tebots. Any Jets fan who continues to care about this team during a 2-10 season and a 5-year playoff drought is a real fan. We may not have a good football team, but we should be united in the fact that all Jets fans are "real" fans.
what if I wake up w/ wings tomorrow and can fly? Luck's come around once in a generation. I can't ever root for the Jets to lose in any situation. we have no idea how good or bad these players will be, you can find good players anywhere in the draft.
If you're a Jets fan you root for your team to win regardless. This is, by far, the least favorite of all the Jets teams I have ever rooted for. At times, with this team, it feels more like a chore to root for them. ....BUT if you are a Jets fan you know the draft means absolutely nothing. An earlier pick means absolutely nothing. Don't pretend that a few draft positions are going to make the difference between a win or lose Jets team. We need more help in Free Agency. We need an offensive line before we bring in a rookie QB that you guys are all creaming for. A rookie will die here with this coaching staff, this offensive line and this media. I'm rooting for the Jets to win as hard as it is to like this shitty team and regardless of a stupid earlier draft pick that will most likely be spent on shit anyway.
Thats fine. I have never rooted for the Jets to lose either. But I can certainly see the argument for the other side. If we have to sacrifice a few meaningless games now to get a franchise QB for the future, I think there is merit in that.
The "franchise" Qb will never make it here with this coaching staff and this offensive line. We need an offensive minded coach and cross our finger that the defensive side doesn't completely fall apart.
100% agreed Stokes Do i really want the Jets to lose? No, but we have done a terrible job of managing ourselves after a lost season and a mediocre season. The envy is with those teams that have seasons like ours but then rebound to put a strong run again right away.
Coaching staff will more than likely be gone, no? Offensive line is a valid concern. Hopefully it is addressed in the later rounds and free agency. That isnt going to stop me from taking a guy that could be a franchise QB. I dont think Mariota is a franchise QB, but I agree with the mindset. If the QB's are gone, I would love to have Peat or that OT from Pitt.
Yeah there is a huge difference between openly rooting against the Jets and not really caring whether they win or lose. The last time I really cared about a Jets game was the New England game. After that Ive watched Jets games the same way Id watch most other NFL game. No rooting interest. If we win great, if we lose great. Kinda sucks that all we have to look forward to til next September is just rooting against the Pats.
Blame the league. It's not your fault the NFL rewards the worst teams with higher draft picks. You aren't a fake fan at all you are a good fan for recognizing the long-term and still feeling bad about the predicament the Jets' play and the league's structure has put you in.
if a bad organization picks #1 every year they won't get better. good organizations draft well no matter where they draft. it's silly to root for a high draft pick.
I can't say I'm rooting for the team the Jets are currently playing, but at this point it bothers me even less when they do lose. More than wins and losses, I'm looking to see good performances from various players to provide hope for this team going forward.
Then stop watching the Jets this season, what exactly do you watch for if you don't root for your team to win every Sunday? You guys want us to lose every Sunday and when your wish is granted continue to post threads complaining about the loss, isn't a loss what you wanted? And I'm sick of this shit about meaningless games, this is the NFL every game is meaningful, I want our players to be put in position to win games and to LEARN how to WIN, guys like Wilkerson and Richardson who are young and have no idea what it feels like to be winners, a losing mentality is a toxic one.
I've been rooting for the ny jets for 30 years now and sometimes the best thing is to lose, just ask colts fans when there qb went down with injury. for people to tell others what constitutes a fan is ludicrous and hypocritical. no reason anyone has to defend themselves for being a jets fan, especially since most of us were never even born before they actually won there only superbowl.
This isn't some feel good movie where the underprivileged kids get together as a team and persevere over the more talented, better equipped, better looking big bad machine. It's not Disney. It's the NFL and more talented teams win. You don't LEARN how to win. You get better PLAYERS and they win. Stop being naive. This isn't Remember the Titans or Rudy or Hoosiers or The Little Giants or The Mighty Ducks. It's the NFL. _
I know that, this was a sarcastic thread and I pity the naive that think meaningless wins actually mean something. _
