We are fucked with getting Mariota. There is no way we jump spots with Tampa and Tennessee. And if we all finished tied, we lose out because we had the hardest schedule. We likely will pick at #5 and the pick needs to be Winston. Oakland will finish at 1 and likely not take a QB, Tampa Bay will finish at 2 and likely take Mariota. Jacksonville is 3 and doesn't need a QB. And Tennessee will be 4, which will be the wild card. Do they take Winston and completely screw the Jets? As crazy as it seems, Woody might need to look into trading into the first spot with Oakland. You can take a gamble and hope one of them falls, but what if they don't? This franchise can't continue with these morons at QB.
We absolutely can and probably will jump spots with Tennessee. Tampa Bay will most likely be ahead of us. And Woody absolutely should trade into the spot that gets us Mariota. If it needs to be the Raiders slot, then that's what we need to do. _
As badly as I want Mariota, with the insane number of needs on this team, I'm hesitant about trading up for him simply because I see us with a top-10 pick next year and I'm guessing any trade up for him is going to cost us our 2016 first-rounder. Barring the sudden transformation of Milliner/Pryor to All-Pros, we're just too damn thin on young talent. Watching that Miami game also made me realize that our OL just can't pass-block for ****, and putting a young QB, even a mobile one, behind a leaky offensive line is not a recipe for success in the NFL.
So you're plan next year is to go in with Mariota as backup/third string and to start a JAG while Mariota gets used to the speed of the game. I think that is a great plan. With some solid offensive coaching and some good receivers Mariota could be put in a real situation to succeed. I understand there is no guarantee, but there is a pretty good chance that we have another bad season if we go into next season with Brian Hoyer or Matt Moore as our starting QB. You would trade a potential top 5-10 pick (at least) next year to move up 4 spots this year? I like the idea of Mariota, but I think the price will be too steep for me.
Yes my plan is that he never sees the field other than in a complete mop up role in the last 4 -5 games and only to hand off or throw a few 5 yard passes. Any of the names we've all mentioned would work as the starter next year. I would not give Hoyer the deal he's going to be looking for. I think we'll be drafting 4 and I do not believe it will take next year's 1 to move up to the first pick--but maybe I'm being optimistic. _
It might only take this year's first-and-second round picks if the Raiders have their eye on Amari Cooper to encourage Carr's development. I can't see us getting away with giving up anything less than that, though. Could be worth it for us, though it's hard to look at the potential talent - especially at pass-rusher - we'd be passing on. As for sitting Mariota on the bench: I more or less agree with you as to what should happen, though I think that with the right HC/OC/QB coaches and offensive system he could be ready to go by the last few games of the season. That said, I don't think that our Owner, GM, or HC would be willing to let him sit on the bench if we've got a losing record more than say, 4 games into the season. Easy parallels to the Henne/Bortles situation this past year in Jacksonville.
I think we'll essentially be playing Tennessee for the rights to Jameis lol or Mariota if Tampa takes Winston which it's been said they like him.
Go root for another team. A TRUE FAN NEVER WANTS THEIR TEAM TO LOSE. I know a thing or two about the draft, nothing is for certain. Rooting for your team to lose is nonsense, especially this year....there is no suck for Luck type of player.
You certainly can, but you're showing your not a "true fan" and lack of maturity. Mariota , JW or any other player aren't sure things and to want to lose all your games to draft one of them is crazy.
It will and you are. That aside I don't see losing a future 1st for a potential franchise QB as being a big deal provided you are not also giving up day 2 picks in the present draft.
It's interesting that you brought up Henne/Bortles because IMO Bortles clearly outplayed Henne in the pre-season and I would suspect in training camp as well. Yet the CS still went with Henne as they announced very early on. I say bring in a vet and let them compete. I'm not for predetermining who starts or rides the bench before they step foot in TC. Mariota may surprise and/or the vet may disappoint; you never know. The best players should play period.
Though I agree with you about having a losing mentality, let's cool it with the "true fan" allegations. Everyone positing on this board is a true fan. In fact, anyone who considers himself a Jets fan during a 2-10 season (and after 5 years of losing seasons ) is a true fan. There are no more bandwagoners, there are no more fair weather fans. We're the only fans left, and whether we are rooting to win our lose, we're all true fans.
You're kidding right?? DID YOU SEE JET17'S RESPONSE TO MY POST???......"Cause I want to LOL"...JUVENILE!! Not everyone on this site is a true fan. There are trolls and immature posters that post before engaging their brains. A "true" fan would never want their team to lose for any reason. The draft isn't an exact science and hoping for your team to lose to get a pick or 2 closer for an unknown is crazy. I've played competitive sports, never once did I tank, it's not the nature of the game or a 'true" fan. The purpose of playing the game is to win...end of story. It's clear your definition of a 'true fan" is different than mine.
Most everything in life is an unknown to some degree. One notable exception is that it's completely known that it doesn't mean shit if a hopeless team wins a meaningless game at the end of the year. And while no player in the draft is a sure thing, if a manager makes good decisions their probability of having a successful draft clearly increases having the pick of the litter rather than the leftover runts in the long run. You obviously understand this on some level, so the fact that you don't care is your choice just like it's my choice to root for maximizing future chances when the team isn't competitive. To make a sweeping accusation that anyone that thinks like I do isn't a true fan is insulting and thick headed.
That's fair but rooting for a 2-10 team to lose meaningless games is not equivalent to turning in your fan card. I do not abide by his philosophy nor am I saying that he's not immature and it even may be a coping mechanism to root for your team to lose since we lose so often, but all I'm saying is the Jets are not the Seahawks or Steelers or Patriots or Packers. We don't have bandwagoners. We don't have very many fair weather fans. And all of the Tebots are gone. Everyone left has commuted their time and energy and (likely) money into being a Fan of a losing organization. It's not time to divide ourselves between the "true fans" and false fans, lol.
