Coaches aren't abandoning the read option too soon, history is simply showing that the most important skill a QB has that will win long term is the ability to stand in the pocket, make reads and make throws. The read option QBs are showing to be extremely deficient in that area, so coaches are moving away from it in hopes of getting their QB's to develop the skills that have proven to win games long term.

I understand why they are moving away from it but is it really worth it if the quarterbacks simply aren't good at sitting in the pocket and throwing all day long?

You need to play to your quarterbacks strengths like the Chiefs do with Alex Smith.. He can't throw the ball down field so don't throw the ball down the field. It's not like the Chiefs want to not complete 20+ yard pass plays they just don't have the guy to do it.

Similarly RG3 had a bunch of success running a play action read option offense then he's forced to sit in the pocket and he sucks. Can't ask people to do things they aren't capable of doing.

Unless we can get oakland to trade their 1st to s.f. highly unlikely, but the raiders are the raiders.
its probably best to stay out of this all together unless he gets fired

That would be a massively stupid move by them, but you're right, they are the Raiders.

And not that I put much credence into it, but Schefter said on Mike and Mike this am that last year when Cleveland was thinking about trading for him, talk was it'd take 2 3s and that it definitely won't take a 1st to get him.

    2 Things
1- We chose Rex over Harbaugh
2- If we can somehow keep Rex as a DC..
2a- Because of the 1st #2 might be unrealistic.

Bonus- Rex will win a SB as a DC or HC with another team.

What makes you think Harbaugh would want MM. Not saying he wont just curious as to why you think Harbaugh would for sure want to be use the 1st round pick on a QB.

i agree with him. no draft choice giveaways, especially with a top 10 pick.
you can get an oc like kyle shanahan, joe lombardi, or coach like david shaw without shipping away draft picks.
better to get a top gm/consultant like the tuna, wolf, or polihan and let him get the coach.

I think Rex can truly win a Super Bowl as a DC somewhere else...it will be a damn shame though, but he is super talented on defense. I can totally see him getting a DC/Asst. Head Coach job with Chicago Bears or something.

Agreed. I've never liked Rex as a HC! But that doesn't mean you need to run him into the ground.

If you want my honest opinion, however, this is yet another knock on woody. I think he wants Rex to either resign or he wants him to work the rest of the season. I truly believe Woody is cheap enough to not want to pay Rex for less than half a season, even if that means fucking around with the team, with the FO, and so on. Someone recently called Woody a dilettante and the sums him up perfectly: a petty, incompetent, dilettante.

Black Monday can't get here soon enough. Until then, I will enjoy evaluating our supposed talent, but I'm getting my hopes up for a RIGHT CHANGE for once.

I'm not sure about anything, I was just hypothesizing that that's something he COULD do.

But MM IMHO is a exceptional and potential franchise QB so the better question is, why WOULDN'T he want MM. Unless of course he loves Carr (as do I). He'd be getting a better version of Kaep to start his legacy in Oakland.

I would do it but the Raiders and jets have leverage on this to, the 49ers want to get rid of him, they will fire him if no one trades. So they have to take what they can get to...

He is not the 49ers head coach under any circumstances next seasob

It makes too much sense for Harbaugh not to take the Michigan job

Why? The NFL is where it's at, the best of the best. He is a hot commodity, so I don't see why he would want to go back to college ball.

I don't think SF will get anything higher than a third. A first or second for a HC, seems a bit ridiculous.

Not really. Harbaugh has to also be willing to go to more than 1 team. The "trade" only works if the new team is able to sign Harbaugh to a contract extension. Harbaugh can sort of let it be known that Team A is okay, but Team B is not in which case SF doesn't have much leverage.

Also, the dynamics this off-season are very different than last off-season. So the Browns talking about 2 third round picks last year doesn't set the price for this year. Last year, it was not widely known at all that there was not a known rift between SF and Harbaugh (and in fact SF decided to keep him and try to make it work) so the "price" for a trade would be a lot higher. This all looks like, absent SF running the table and winning playoff games, it is now a sure thing that SF and Harbaugh will part ways this off season. Thus, the "price" should be lower.
