Well, leave it to the New York Post to get this situation all cleared up. I guess Brian Costello isn't part of the Jet Hating Beat Writers Corps everyone loves to hate after all..

The article is too logical to be true. We are the most not logical team in the NFL. If we were Sanchez would still be here and Rex would not have put him in a ridiculous situation (snoopy bowl). We are what we are. A bad team led by the village idiots.
Not a Geno supporter but I hope we kick the dolphags azzes..Of course this is just one (tired of this sh#t) fan's opinion.

Ok so Mehta claims Marty and Lee plus Rex and almost everybody but Idzik wants Mike Vick to start. Is this really such a bfd esp after Vick played horribly on Monday night and Geno gave us our best chance to win. So is Manish telling the truth or lying. It's obvious what he wants: anything that Idzik doesn't. When I was a kid if I lied my parents would punish me to teach me a lesson. I was grounded. Of course some people make a living from lying.

Aside from this take on Simms not fitting with having him on the squad, as in if he's so bad why have him take up a roster space, there are in fact potential explanations for why neither Ryan nor Idzik would want to play him.

First of all when he was signed in 12, he didn't make the team since the CS in effect chose McElroy over him. McElroy is now out of the league, but for now the point is that 13 was really Simms's first year with the Jets.

We all know the controversy that followed Sanchez getting hurt in the pre-season. Ryan had great reason to be defensive about that, as well as did the FO since they failed to provide vet competition for Sanchez going into the season. Viewed as defensive of their collective decisions, how better than to play Smith and have him succeed?

In fact Smith largely failed for most of the 13 season, and Ryan eventually was forced to put Simms in there. Simms in fact looked very good in pre-season, so I was one who was mystified how Ryan continued to play Smith when he obviously could use some time on the bench. And while Simms did not look very good when he came in, he was no worse than Smith.

But they put Smith back in there not only because Simms did not look very impressive. The FO had a vested interest in playing their second round pick, and by then Ryan had said many times how much he had faith in Smith.

This year with Sanchez gone they made the big show of signing Vick as competition, then there was no competition. If they were not going to allow Vick to compete, how on earth could we expect them to allow Simms to compete? They didn't even talk about doing so.

So now we know Smith sucks, and Vick is either too old or too disgusted or both. Who to play?

If they went with Simms right now, it would undermine whatever small bit of credibility Ryan and Idzik still have. The obvious question would be why did you not play him before? If he got in there, and did well, it would actually be WORSE for their reputations. Better to not even give him a chance and ride it on out.

Many here think Ryan will end up as an HC somewhere else. One thing could still happen this year that would undermine that chance, and that is if Simms got in there, played well, and people wondered why Ryan did not play him before. It would be just more evidence that Ryan does not know how to assess the Qb position, in short. That is a perfectly plausible explanation.

Now to be clear I am not saying I KNOW this to be the explanation. It's just that don't act like yours is the only way to understand what might be going on here.

I've seen people throw out they think Rex has something personal against Simms and now BB is saying that it would undermine their credibility if he played well? I don't follow either argument at all.

Simms probably just isn't any good. He was horrible in college. He probably looks like he doesn't belong in practice. So he's had moderate success in the preseason situations against other guys that don't belong in the league.. that doesn't mean he should play on sundays. We've had QBs in the past look even better in those crap situations anyway. He wasn't really lighting it up.

I saw him play in the green and white scrimmage this year and multiple practices the year before at Cortland. He's not good.

Kick Simms off the team if he sucks. Keeping him for emergency? 3rd tier QB's are a dime a dozen why keep him on the practice squad taking up a space that could be used on another need position player?

Because why has he not been playing Simms before now is the reason he would not do so now.

If Geno fails or gets hurt, who is our # 2 QB, Simms or Vick?

I think that sentence hits to the heart of the problem. Further, I believe that the whole QB situation has been further acerbated by the underwhelming performance of MM and his inferior group of offensive coaches, and accentuated by Rex's inability to affect the offense in any way, shape or form. I have seen no indication that the offense is game planning to the few strengths we have, like the running game, mobile QB, screens, short passes and reverses. As a result we end up with a rope a dope QB development process and a whole bunch of disgusted players

As usual you are having comprehension problems, especially when "attempting" to comprehend analyses that don't fit with your homerism.

I for one did not say I know what is going on with Simms and why he is not playing. But it is hilarious that homers only have room for an explanation that exonerates the team for not playing Simms.

You see the problem with not playing him, from a homeristic perspective, is not whether he's not a good Qb. The problem is why is he on the roster if he sucks even worse than Smith.

And how come an FO and HC were so wrong about Smith, but are so right about Simms not being as good as the Qb they were so wrong about.

Simply put there is no explanation that makes sense that fits with your homeristic perspective, homer.

    Hilarious indeed.

He puts together another impressive string of 5 mediocre games and he's our starter next year and we go CB or DT at the 4th pick in next years draft.

Yep, this is a very real concern. I don't know if Ryan in fact is on board with playing Smith. But it makes complete sense that Idzik would want to give Smith more of a chance to justify his not only being picked but also made the starter this year without any real competition. Idzik has been all in on Smith, and it makes sense he is holding out hope that Smith can salvage Idzik's standing with decent enough performances. And Woodrow is dumb enough he just might go for that, similarly justifying HIS choice of Idzik.

    It's all politics, man.
