Teams are abandoning the read option for absolutely no reason. Seattle is living proof it's alive and well. Teams, including San Francisco are trying to force this pro style on running quarterbacks that anyone can see is going to fail with the RG3 debacle. Teams are so hell bent on preserving these guys to be franchise quarterbacks for 15 years that they ignore their strengths. It's tough to say whether that's Harbaugh or the offense coordinator.

At any rate I don't think teams need to abandon the read option as quickly as they do. 6, 7 years down the road you can tell your guy to stop running, not his second year when it's still working.

I agree that teams are too worried about their QBs getting hurt and ignoring strengths but the NFL is catching up to the read option. Seattle is the only team it really works for and that's because Wilson is an equally great passer and he'd be successful in any pro-style offense.

These things happen in cycles. Offenses come up with something new and defenses catch up to it.. The NFL version of the zone read is too slow developing and with college teams running that offense now everywhere, the new players coming into the league are used to it. It caught NFL vets by surprise when it first came out. That won't be the case in the coming years.

Harbaugh though has shown he isn't married to one system and has shown he can get the most out of his QBs. Thats why I want him here more than anything. Regardless of what offensive system they want to run here it will be refreshing to have a guy dedicated to making the QB position better from day 1.

Aren't we talking about making moves here? My apologies if the context is a bit distorted.

    Maybe I was unclear.

The head coach is not the problem here, and ...you left out that part of my post where I stated that quite clearly.

this thread is, about replacing the HC is it not? yes Tanny and Sanchez are gone, but that was not the substance of my post, another knee jerk reaction to bring in a HC, when you have the most accomplished head coach since Weeb is retarded.

I merely pointed out that 2 of the 3 pieces of the most success this organization has had since 1969 are gone, because the fans and the media and the owner are retarded, is no reason to repeat the mistake a third time.

Anyone who thought the 49ers were a 12 win team this year were clueless. They appear right on track to their 9 wins that they were rightfully expected to get.

Stop looking at the names on the jerseys, aged roster that hit its peak, had success, did not win it all. They had their time, its over, they are not returning to contender status this season or next imo.

Name an organization that has 6-7 years of patience....

    I'll wait.

I doubt this would come to fruition, but bring'em on I say. This team needs a complete change in direction imo, and Harbaugh is the type of coach to bring it in.

I get the cyclical trends of the NFL and gimmicks of offense but look around the NFL that had teams that were running the read option all day against people; Washington, Philadelphia, Carolina, San Francisco, Seattle... Seattle is the only team that still runs it consistently.. There is a hit and miss element to it at points where it'll hit a big play if teams are patient with it. I think it's a good wrinkle to have at least to work play action off of it like Kansas City does with it. Teams like San Francisco and Washington had one year of success with the type of read option play action offense then decided they're scared for their quarterback and lined him up under center in a two tightend two receiver set. These types of quarterbacks need to be eased into that type of offense.

And if we're looking at Mariotta we need a mind like Harbaugh to do it.

I'm not sure what you're getting at I never said organizations wait 6-7 years on a quarterback. I said they need to keep a system that works for their quarterback before down the road when he loses some of his athleticism then you can tell him to stay in the pocket.

As a Jet fan...beggars cant be choosers. I would DIE to have him as coach. Any Jet fan would take winning seasons almost every year and that's what he pretty much guarantees.

Only thing that bothers me about him is that he has a JET mentality..perhaps to a fault. Can he..if he has the proper qb..open it up? I'm not so sure about that. He has a cast of receivers that should put up points but he has that stubbornness.

Again..as a JET fan? Nitpicking. I will wait until his year 2 here to bitch about it...because lets face it...we WILL bitch about it eventually.

I have my doubts about Mariotta but if Harbaugh said to draft him, I'd feel real comfortable with this combo.

For those who dismiss the job Harbaugh has done with the 49ers, due the 'abundance of talent' over there. How do you then explain the job he did at Stanford and San Diego? Its hard to argue that those two programs were rich with talent and pro prospects before he arrived. Yes, college is a different beast then the NFL, but at the same time, you have to evaluate Harbaugh on his entire resume of work. Which is fairly impressive.

The best NCAAF coaches are Saban and Meyer. Uu
Did you see the game last Monday. Do you question the effort on the field. I do. Before the season nobody predicted the Jets were going to be a 2-10 team. Even Vegas had us a lot better than that. Mike Vick wasn't a bad signing and either were any of the other FA signings. The Jets wanted to win this season and that includes Idzik.

Just the action itself can open up a running lane because it freezes the defensive end. Philly did run it against Dallas even though they've moved away from it with Sanchez. Over the past couple years between Foles & Sanchez the quarterback rarely keeps it but it's the action itself that creates seems if you have a capable runner.

I dont get why they would trade him...He must be totally arrogant and ignores everything management says.

However if the choice is between us and the Raiders, they could probably get a better deal from the Raiders but would they trade him to a crosstown team?

According to Francesa, getting Jim "Harboar" will cost a 2nd or a high 3rd

Torn on this.. the bottom line is it doesn't matter who the coach is if they don't get a legit QB. Normally I'd say why waste a draft pick that could contribute on the team but with Idzik in charge he'd just screw up the pick anyway so I can see them giving up a high 3rd pick.

I don't see how we can beat oakland in a bidding war for harbaugh and still get mariota.
given that, i wouldn't want to trade for the coach, hold the pick to get the duck

    +1

I guess my biggest fear is, if he goes to Oakland and they don't have to give up their first pick, he'll take Mariota.

I'd trade for Carr as a backup plan, but if Harbaugh goes to Oakland, they'll get him and MM.
