I have to agree here. When your authority is undermined to this degree, resigning at least leaves you with some dignity. At this point, Woody and Idzik is turning Rex into their bitch and even though I'm not a Rex guy, I do not like how this is going down at all..
Vick was checked out all season anyway. The Jets don't need to do him any favors in auditioning for a starting gig elsewhere. Start Geno, start Simms, start some bum off the street. All I know is that it's evaluation time anything else is asinine
Do you think the Jets were well-coached this season, even given the talent levels? This is the worst job of coaching at all levels that I've seen since the Kotite debacle. Too many penalties, too many bad players left on the field despite alternatives being available, too many bad timeouts taken, too much chaos on the sidelines during games. Even the game planning stunk for a lot of the season and at least on the defensive side that was a departure from the norms. I like Rex Ryan a lot. He's been one of my favorite coaches, maybe my favorite of all time behind Walt Michaels, but this season has been a firing offense from start to finish. Now that I think about it Rex was really pissed off after the narrow win against the Raiders. He called out the offense for giving away several opportunities in what should have been a blowout. So it hasn't been a complete failure on that angle. I don't know if Rex is going to get fired. I don't think it is a lock by any means. I do think that if the Jets plan to retain him they need to realize that they're developing a head coach as well and trying to make his assets, and Rex definitely has assets to contribute, come into balance more by supporting him in improving on the deficits. Rex has moments where he's a very good head coach. He's blown out some much better teams over the years he's been with the Jets. He's also absorbed some completely incomprehensible losses, and he and the Jets need to figure that out if he stays.
Not sure about the whole year, but... When Vick dove to make that "tackle" after the int, you just knew he was gonna come up limping and give himself an out. I'm certainly no Rex fan, but the way they're scewing with him really sucks. I wish he'd have had the stones to tell them he was going with Vick in week 2 or 3. If he had said I'm making the personell decisions for this team and you can fire me if you don't like it, I'd have a little more respect for him.
I get your point, but it's obvious to me Ryan feels his career will be best served long term by being seen as a company man. Interesting, since while that often seems like the smart conservative move, and the opposite approach can be quite problematic, it's not always the best approach. He has to be counting on people seeing his team's lack of production was more about the roster than about his coaching. I get how he will likely be given a certain amount of mileage out of that, because there is truth to it. But it's not the whole story, and there's gray areas of responsibility that may well require him to make his case at some point in the future. If I were considering hiring an NFL HC, and Ryan was under discussion, I'd want to know some things I presently don't, that are not common knowledge. Ryan might find he has to speak to those concerns at some point down the road, and then the limitations of being the company man become significant.
This is a questionable move at best. Firstly, you need to evaluate ALL the talent on the roster with 5 games remaining. That includes Simms. At this stage everyone, including practice squad guys should get at least 2 or 3 "looks" before making next season decisions. Geno Smith, in my opinion, needs to have no less than 10 or 15 touchdowns against ZERO turnovers over the next 5 games to even remotely come close to me thinking is any kind of player "in the mix" for next year...other than a sure fire backup. End of story. I do not NEED to SEE any more looks. Only a dumb ass needs to see more of the same.
I understand that Woody likes Rex and it's ultimately his decision, but has a 2-9 team ever retained their head coach? Now if we win the next 5 games and start to look good I can see your point, but assuming we finish as a 2-4 win team, Rex is going to be fired. He has already survived two OC firings and a GM firing; there are no other scapegoats left.
wow, i thought the team was bad, but not necessarily dysfunctional. this move is dysfunctional. The HC needs to make that decision, and while i don't like Vick, he gives at least a marginally better chance at winning. the HC owes it to the other 52 players to give them the best chance to win, and he's not even authorized to make that call? why should the players give a shit about winning, if the FO (who will be fired) doesn't? they will tank the rest of this season. its the wrong message.
Marvin Lewis survived a 1-11-1 start in 2008, losses 10 and 11 were 34-3 and 35-3 against the Ravens (divisional rival) and the Colts. The Bengals had 1 playoff appearance in 6 years under Lewis after that season. He survived 2-11 in 2010 after that. Bengals were 2 for 8 in the playoffs at that point without a playoff win. They're 4 for 4 since then assuming they make it this year. Still no playoff win.
I'm thinking if over this next stretch of games, if he can average under a 60% completion rate and under 200 yards per game like he did those awesome last 4 games last year, we may have found our franchise savior. Fuck Mariota, surround Geno with some MORE weapons and watch him take off. _
Its the RIGHT call, lets see what Geno has and then move forward. Vick is not going to be around next year
So the correct call is not to put the players on the field that give you the better chance to win but rather select underperforming rookies to give Idzik more time to evaluate his draft choices? Have we not seen enough this year TO RECOGNIZE FAILURE? Is Geno going to miraculously improve enough to make us believe in him? Is that what playing like a Jet means? So Woody and Idzik both, armed with a sub zero IQ in football operations will make the final decision on who to play to determine the path forward? Tell me that isn't so? If either one of these clowns had a smidgeon of class they would have released Rex on the spot with dignity and put an interim figure head HC to carry their ill fated wishes. In one swooping idiotic move they have insulted every single loyal and hardworking player on the team. And across the NFL players will take notice. Being a Jet is not what you want to be. How do you think the rest of the Jet players feel? No problem, we are mailing in this season for the betterment of the team in the long term? Can anyone one surmise that key players like Mo Wilk and others would be interested in signing a long term extension with this cluster fuck of an organization? Is it remotely conceivable that such actions would in any way shape or form help open the door for talented free agents and coaches alike to come here? Can you just see them lining up to sign up with this team? Actions speak louder than words. This move sends a strong signal alright. If you are a proud, strong minded and capable coach or player you are better off looking elsewhere. Winning football and talent acquisition is not spoken in JET'S LAND. COULD IT GET MORE PATHETIC THAN THIS?
Then Brad, you fire the guy. You don't turn him into a eunuch. You don't undermine him like this by publicly taking the QB decision out of his hands. While I agree this team was not well coached, it was not well stocked either and that was the fault of the GM who now thinks its HIS call to decide who starts at QB. New York is not a good developmental location for anybody in any sport. Definitely not the place for a HC and in this case, a GM to make his bones. Woody disagrees and that's why this team if fckd as badly as it is right now. They're shitting on Rex and that's wrong. The perception now has to be Rex as Lame Duck. How do you keep players from being both resentful towards the Leadership and resentful towards Eugene for being the GM's pet project. If this Organization had an ounce of integrity left in it, they would just fire Rex, make MM interim HC and look at the future. This is just wrong on a lot of levels.
Shame on me for being such an idiot in believing anything that Mehta prints. From here on out every single reference emanating from this buffoon will be summarily ignored as trash. My apologies to the TGG members for my rant.
