NY Jets turning back to Geno Smith at QB, but source says decision was not made by Rex Ryan The team announced Wednesday morning that Smith would start Monday against the Dolphins after he came on in relief for Mike Vick in last Monday's 38-3 blowout loss to the Bills in Detroit. BY SETH WALDER , MANISH MEHTA NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Wednesday, November 26, 2014, 8:29 AM ROBERT SABO/NEW YORK DAILY NEWSThe NY Jets announce Wednesday morning that Geno Smith will be back under center vs. Dolphins. Rex Ryan doesn't even get to pick his own starting quarterback anymore. The Jets are back to Geno Smith, but the decision was not made by Rex Ryan, according to a source. The team announced Wednesday morning that Smith would start Monday against the Dolphins after he came on in relief for Mike Vick in last Monday's 38-3 blowout loss to the Bills in Detroit. The News learned on Tuesday that Ryan had preferred Vick to start assuming the veteran was healthy. Ryan said Tuesday that Vick's calf would not be a determining factor in the decision. JEFF KOWALSKY/EPAMike Vick was benched during Monday night debacle vs. the Buffalo Bills in Detroit. Who decides the team's starting quarterback has been an issue under the Idzik regime dating all the way back to training camp in 2013, when Ryan wouldn't say he had final say on the quarterback competition. But that issue has now reached new heights, with Ryan not making the call on Wednesday. The coach had to discuss his decision to switch quarterbacks with Woody Johnson and John Idzik a couple of weeks ago. It's easy to see why there was a difference of opinion, despite the fact that the Jets are mathematically eliminated from the postseason. Ryan is barely clutching to his job and wants every win he can get. Meanwhile, the front office presumably wants to see how Smith responds after a few weeks on the bench to get a last sense if there is any hope for his future. Smith started the team's first eight games, in which the Jets compiled a 1-7 record and he accumulated a 67.4 quarterback rating. The Jets were 1-2 with Vick as the starter. Fuck Idzik
That's a good call and in this instance I am glad this order came from the top. There's absolutely no point in playing Michael Vick at 2-9. Rex wants to play him because he might win a few more games and fatten his resume for his next gig. This organization should be thinking long term and playing a lot of the young players to close out this season. -they should give the same orders with guys like Calvin Pace, Jason Babin, Willie Colon,.. Calvin Pryor should be back out there.. etc. When you are 2-9 as a coach you lose the right to play the more capable vets, and when you are 2-9 and you are a veteran you lose the right to hold onto your position in favor of younger players. Welcome to the NFL. Don't like it? Tough luck bitch next time win a few games and keep yourselves relevant in November
I think the head coach should make the decision. Even Rex Ryan who has shown over the years he is clueless dealing with the Qb position. If me I'd start Geno after Vick's no-show on Monday night.
^This. Didn't this troll's "source" walk out the door en route to Buffalo then Cleveland? I wouldn't click on anything 'Mehta' if you paid me.
This is the right decision as we are only playing to evaluate players at this point, but the disarray in this organization has to be very off putting to any future FA or coaching candidate that may consider coming here. At this point it's got to be a total housecleaning or our future is nothing short of mediocrity going forward.
I understand your point, and am kind of okay with the not playing Vick part. Although I do think he gives the Jets a better shot at winning, and ftr I do not count myself as one who hopes to see more losses. Not yet, anyway. Maybe if playing Smith sinks in more I will join those fellows. But the real problem with playing Smith is what if the results are ambiguous? I say that virtually certain he will not suddenly become a great NFL Qb or anything close to it. But what if we see a replay of the somewhat less awful play we saw last year? Savvy observers such as yours truly noted that Smith's lower turnovers came at a cost in those four games at the end of last year. Lower ypa in particular. They went with shorter low risk passes. Add in some weak opponents and some strong efforts at RB and you had the appearance of a better Qb in Smith. Well, we saw beneath the very thin veneer down last season's stretch as the Jets went into this season. Imo Smith has already shown he sucks too much to ever be a quality NFL Qb. But that doesn't mean my opinion counts for much in John Idzik Fairy Tales. You know the one where he's a competent GM and made a great move drafting Smith. So if Smith plays decent, but not great, does Idzik take the opportunity to in effect ignore Smith's play to date this season? Says here he jumps at that one. There's a real risk here.
All I do is want to win games esp against the Fins. I'd like to see what Geno can do after being benched. If Vick had played well it would be a different story but he was brutal on Monday night.
This is the right decision. Geno is pretty bad, but at least letting him play the last 5 games or so will let us know if he can be a capable backup or if its over.
Let me preface by saying - I strongly, strongly doubt Geno Smith becomes anything good in this league... you would have to be kidding yourself to think anything different. But he is still a 24 year old QB with some working pieces and a long term contract. @ 2-9 that alone is enough to warrant starting over a 34 year old with strengths and weaknesses clearly defined, that is on the decline with a short term deal. Add in the fact that we knew Smith was raw coming out it makes even more sense to let him get experience in a season that has in effect turned every game into quasi preseason games at this point. There will be wholesale changes at the end of the season either way so with Geno Smith it doesn't matter if he wins or loses.. all it does is give more film for the next coach to evaluate him. If he wins, good maybe they have something to work with. If he loses, great, they know what they have and are picking at the top of the draft. With Vick it's damaging if he wins and pointless if he loses. no upside at this point.
That's a good point. He hasn't really been benched before. This is new territory for him. Lets see how he reacts. why not?
Mehta and some of the other media are saying this was Idzik's decision and that it was forced on Rex. How do they know unless they're getting this info from Rex or his leaks.
I really do not mind this at all. If we are preparing to draft a QB, we need to make sure its the right decision. I have no faith in Geno at all but at this point it does not benefit us to play Vick. He is not our future, I do not want him starting next year.......
geno is the obvious choice at this point and not allowing Rex, if true, to make the decision is also the right decision since he's a complete buffoon.
I can't think of a situation where a HC wasn't allowed to pick the starting QB and they were back next year. Correct me if I'm wrong on that. Bye Rex. Best of luck as a DC somewhere next year.
