We'd be eliminated today with a loss, or whenever our 9th loss comes. That's because there have to be at least 2 8 win teams by virtue of 7 win teams playing each other. I also think the Chiefs conference record is too good for us to tiebreak. So pretty much even 8-8 at this point wouldn't be enough.
But as of right now, we aren't mathematically eliminated yet? I know the Chargers have the tiebreaker against us, so if they win one more game than we are done.
I thought that too but that's actually not how wild card tiebreakers work. If the Chargers and us were the only ones tied at 8-8 then they'd tiebreak us, but when there are 3 or more teams tied for the same spot (which would need to be the case, there would have to be like 4 8-8 teams in order for us to make it) head to head tiebreakers are ignored in favor of conference records
That's not correct, I worked out a scenario this morning on that playoff machine where the Jets can still get in, but it's such a long shot that it's not even worth discussing, the Jets aren't mathematically eliminated yet, but they also aren't going to win out.
We would need 3 of the Steelers, Chiefs, Chargers and Browns to all finish 8-8 or worse, despite them all being 7-4 right now. Plus, they match up with each other a couple times, which factors in some guaranteed wins for one of them. There are only like 2 or 3 combinations that can get us in. I would go nuts if it happened.
Assuming the Jets finish 8-8, what % odds would you put on everything falling in place and jets taking the 6th seed?
I'm playing with ESPN's playoff machine right now. We need a ridiculous amount of help, as in multiple teams losing 4 or their last 5. Although I will say, the teams we need to start losing (Chargers, Chiefs, Browns, Steelers) all have very hard schedules. I could feasibly see them racking up losses. That being said, even at 8-8 it would still be pretty unlikely.
It really sucks that we were out of it by Halloween. even 2 years ago as bad as we were we had a chance in December.
This is comical... Knowing our luck, the teams we need to lose would lose and we would start winning and it would all come down to a Week 17 Ravens Vs Browns matchup to get us in... And lets say we need the Browns to win for us to get in, and these motherfuckas tie...
