Maybe they can base it on a story that's entertaining and not ripped to shreds by special effects-obsessed morons?
I have agreed with everything you said since the project began years ago, but I also understand the studio's side of it. There is only so much source material. This is it. They made 3 Lord of the Rings films, made billions, so they tried to do it again with The Hobbit. We all know the story could be told in one movie, two at the most, but they stretched it out for money. They were not trying to win Oscars this time and it shows. They are still entertaining though.
No argument on the last sentence. At least they were honest about trying to cash in. It sticks in my craw all the same.
Great final trailer...This might be the best one of this trilogy...Sort of like how ROTK was to the original trilogy Are you guys ready to watch the final Tolkien film of our time?
I liked the first and really disliked the second, but I must admit I'm excited for this one. Probably won't go opening night or anything, but I'll get to the theater with my buddies to finish out our Hobbit/LOTR experience.
Are you watching the full 3 movies back-to-back-to-back in the theater? They reshowing LOTR in theater again?
FOTR was such a impactful film to me too...That movie made me a 100% fan of the fantasy film genre...I had never read the books to that point. It was such a great film and I was so bummed out when it ended in that cliffhanger. Return of the King was sheer epicness and for me both are right there at the top...But you are right FOTR is the better film. I own the original extended edition DVDs, those things are amazing...One in a 25 year type trilogy. I am hoping the new Warcraft film will have somewhat a similar impact
After buying The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition and watching all the Appendices and made me nostalgic for LOTR so I have been re-watching the LOTR Appendices the last week or so. Really was amazing. I love your guy's points on Fellowship of the Ring. It too is my favorite and for the same reasons Poeman mentioned. It brought you into the world of Middle Earth. If it did not work, The Two Towers and Return of the King had no chance. It was a special moment for me too in my cinema life. Anyone could argue The Two Towers or Return of the King are the best of the three and I would not disagree as all are great, but I have always leaned toward Fellowship of the Ring and have watched it the most.
Wow, just reading through the evolution of this thread. Over 7 years. Pretty cool. I am excited for The Battle of the Five Armies. I will get tickets one day this week. Has anyone heard Billy Boyd's new song "The Last Goodbye"? I will admit I got a little teary-eyed listening to it. It will play over the credits of the final Hobbit movie.
I am not going to see it back to back, but I did do that for LOTR trilogy. We went to a theater in Baltimore, I think the Senator?? Maybe?? We saw FOTR, an hour break, TTT, a dinner break and then watched ROTK the day it was released. It was pretty fun, although I'm not into people cheering during movies (laughing at comedies is one thing, cheering when I'm trying to watch a movie I haven't seen before annoys me). Hobbit I've just gone to see with a buddy. The first one I thought was long, but I didn't think anything was "exceptionally" unnecessary. The second was had no redeeming qualities to me. Beorn wasn't great. The love interest was ridiculous. Legolas fighting orcs was boring. I'm in the minority, but I found everything with Smaug to be tiresome. The dialogue dragged on, the fight scene with him was preposterous. And then they leave it on a huge cliffhanger (albeit I already know the outcome). This movie was why they didn't need 3. The first was good and I'm willing to bet 3 is decent (maybe a little slow leading up to the battle of five armies). 2 was just terrible, I actually dislike it more after writing about why I didn't like it.
I agree DOS is the worst of the 5 films after watching it a couple times. Still has good parts, but definitely feels rushed and I agree the whole Gold scene with the dwarves and Smaug sucks. In fact, it is even longer in the extended edition and borderline unwatchable. Haha.
Just watched the extended Desolation the other night...having not seen it in the theater, I must say that was some epic sh!t. Really excited for Battle next month. Plus on a side note, I read there may be a teaser for Batman vs Superman in front of Battle.
Gotta agree with those saying FotR was the best so far and DoS the worst, but then I always thought Fellowship was the best part of the books. Smaug chasing the dwarves and ending up cast into gold was pretty dumb. Would have been far better to stick with the book and have Bilbo going down to find the arkenstone a few times and build the tension between him and Smaug. I got the extended versions of LotR, which are pretty good generally, but have stayed away from the ones for The Hobbit. I felt it was already stretched too far. Are they worth it, what else can they put in?
