A few years ago after their 2nd SB championship it was a certainty that both Eli and Coughlin were destined for the HOF. However, with the following 3 years I think they have played and coached themselves OUT of the Hall of Fame. There is precedence of QB's and coaches who have won 2 SB's that are not in the HOF (Plunkett and Siefert / Shanahan). What do you think?
Murrell Either change the Subject Title or the Poll Question. I was about to vote wrong going by the subject title. Coughlin had some success with Jaguars as well and coaches have always less competition in terms of HOF. So I think Coughlin will still make it but not Eli. He is an inconsistent QB and his first Superbowl was product of Giants defense. His second Superbowl, he was awesome though.
Coughlin def deserves to be in. With what he did in Jacksonville and in 2007 he's a shoe-in. I look at 2011 much more like a lucky ride..similar to what Green Bay did in 2010 and Baltimore did in 2013. Still counts but the only reason the Giants even made the playoffs that season was because of a bad division. Eli on the other hand will probably get in because of the 2 SB's , even though he wasnt the reason the Giants won in either game , and his last name. Thats a joke in my opinion because this guy has never put together a hall of fame type season and his career stats are fairly mediocre.
Big no to Eli, he was carried by his defense that held Favre, Brady, Rogers, Romo, Ryan all to 20 points or less in both runs.
Coughlin may get in because he purposely had the Giants practice plays they were not going to run in the SB. They knew that their practices were being filmed by their opponents.
If Eli makes it will be one hell of a reason...Yes he had 2 great postseason runs, but MAH GOODNESS he has been pure shit otherwise
I think Coughlin should make it...Eli's tougher but he'll make it cause he is a Manning, popular and actually played well in big games.
Jim Plunkett isn't in the hall. Eli is borderline and if he gets in it will be because you can't describe Tom Brady's career completely without including Eli Manning as a prominent piece. That's what the Hall of Fame is for: the players without whom you cannot tell the story of the NFL and the greatest players to play the game.
Eli gets in for 2 reasons: 2 Super Bowl MVP trophies and his last name. Obviously Peyton gets in as one of the greatest to ever play the position and the greatest regular season QB ever.
Eli was a sure fire HOFer after 2011. ..since then he's been trying his best to play his way out and he may be succeeding. I think the HoF voters are going to pay a lot of attention to Eli being a part of the team that held 2 of the top 5 offenses in NFL history to 14 and 17 points in Super Bowls. He may have led game winning drives in both but he realistically should have never been in position to lead those drives. Defense won both games and arguably every playoff game he's ever won is on the defense. He's been average at best outside of 2011, led the league in INTs 3 times (2007, 10, and 13), is one of two active players with multiple 5 INT games, and he's only won in the playoffs during 2 seasons while missing the playoffs 4 times (5 if counting 2004).
Eli definitely doesn't belong in the HoF. Coughlin doesn't based on his NY tenure. One year they are great, the next they are awful. The Giants aren't consistently good. I really don't know what's he's done before that to justify it.
I think David Tyree and Mario Manningham should take their places in the HOF because they were the reason for those rings outside of the vicious pass rush
It really sucks though that these guys got two Super Bowls. Im not trying to discount them but it was a serious case of the stars aligning twice. The first run they were able to get last minute wins in Dallas, in Green Bay, and of course the Super Bowl. Then the next run, a referee error in Arizona handed the Giants an extra win which was the difference in them getting in the playoffs. That Giants team NEVER impressed me, heck I remember Giants fans calling in all summer bitching about the roster and how they were jealous of the Jets......but of course as the Giants 2011 season played out, they won a game in Philly against the "Dream Team" Eagles which was a really strange game if you recall, Eagles gained a 16-14 lead late in the game and then it just like fell apart for them to. Later on the Giants got blown out in New Orleans 49-24, but of course because of some Alex Smith miracle TD drive, the Giants didnt have to go back to New Orleans for the NFC Championship....they would have gotten killed again. Then of course the Super Bowl, Tom Brady just went dormant for pretty much all but two drives. Still cant believe that 2011 team won it....they just werent that good, required some miracle comebacks in New England, Dallas (down 34-22 with 4:30 minutes left), of course the Victor Cruz TD against the Jets that changed the game, Joe Philbins son dying which clearly had an obvious effect on the Packers, then of course the rookie fumbling twice in the NFC Championship, Brady missing an easy pass to Welker that would have iced the game..... SMH
He doesnt even need to get in, how many players have 2 Super Bowl MVP? how many are players are in the HoF? case closed, he is in a much more elite category than the HoF like it or not =/
Eli has been up and down his entire career, he has one, MAYBE 2 Hall worthy seasons. the SB MVPs carry weight(even though he didn't deserve either) but not enough to carry a mediocre career into the Hall. Coughlin had 2 title game apps in Jax and obviously won 2 SBs w/ NYG but won w/ 10-6/9-7 teams. Hall coaches are the ones that usually have their teams consistently near the top of the league. He hasn't won a single playoff game(and neither has Eli) outside of the 2 SB runs.
Huh?? I said that Eli gets in BECAUSE of his 2 SB MVP's and his last name. Eli's not in a much more elite category than the HOF, rather he holds an elite distinction which is the 2 SB MVP's. But I would never put Eli in an elite category of NFL QB's when looking at a player's entire career and body of work. If you want to talk about an elite category outside of the HOF, then that would be where Peyton belongs, but not Eli. Eli's a borderling HOF'er who only gets in for the reasons I stated.
