Jets and Bills are in the exact same boat. Both teams benched their 2nd yr QB in favor of a Vet. Would you favor swapping Geno for EJ Manuel for change of scenery?

If it's a new regime no Geno's not around.

If Idzik is back (with or without Rex) they'll probably do with Geno what they should have done with Sanchez his last year and just say he's the backup - presumably to Vick, maybe give him one more chance to play hero when Vick inevitably gets hurt. Especially since they'll have to look for a two anyway if they dump Geno and there aren't going to be many realistic two options out there.

No because that would mean we'd spend valuable time, resources and effort developing a crappy QB.

Give me Mariota to sit, Vick to start and Geno to backup.

I think there are 2 trains of thought here, us wanting him and what the CS want.
In reality he will most likely be here even if it's nothing more than a clipboard holder.
Not that I give too much of a shit about it but we would also look like king douchbags if we just cut him.

I'd take that scenario but replace Geno with Matt

I think so, atleast as a backup/ 3rd string. We resign vick, sign another journeyman QB (somebody like flynn), and draft a QB in one of the mid rounds (3rd/4th). Let those 4 battle it out for the ranks in camp, and 3 battle for the starting job in the preseason. Vick wins the job, Geno close second as a backup, and the Rookie as depth. I think it will be best for Geno to sit out a season. If Rex is fired, who knows Geno could benefit greatly from an offensive minded coach, with an actual offensive scheme, not Marty's gimmick offense

Bold predicition: Vick will go down middle of next year, and the jets are gonna have to make a decision between Geno and the Rookie.

It's only his second season. Yes, he's been atrocious this year, and he should not be our starter in 2015. However, the Jets invested a 2nd round pick in him. He has shown flashes of being a competent QB at times (NE, Atlanta game in 2011, for example). Why not keep him and see if a new coaching staff can develop him? I know some fans want to wash their hand of everything awful this season, but we shouldn't purge players who have talent, just because they have not lived up to expectations after only two seasons. This team needs foster an environment where QB's can develop confidence and grow as players.

Teams have dropped 2nd round picks faster than that before

For sure! I'm not advocating keeping bad players, because of their draft position. I think QB is a little different however. IMO, Geno has talent and he could be a decent backup QB in this league. I don't see the harm in keeping him around next year and seeing what a new coaching staff/philosophy can get out of him. Maybe he turns into a capable backup for the team. That's a pretty good asset to have. If he continues to regress, then release him.

Most second year players who have not been successful, but who are nonetheless kept another year, are kept because they are unproven, and are seen as having upside.

Smith is not unproven. He is a proven steaming pile of shit.

Hence it is not fair to compare him to unknowns.
