Russell Wilson wouldn't have meant anything to the Jets. The reason he means something to the Seahawks is that they also drafted Richard Sherman in the 5th round and Byron Maxwell in the 6th round. That's a pair of quality CB's that played cheap and very effectively in 2012 and 2013. The Seahawks drafted Kam Chancellor in the 5th round. That's a good starting strong safety who was cheap and very effective. The Seahawks drafted K.J. Wright in the 4th round. A good starting LB in the 4th round. They hit on Earl Thomas in the 1st and Bobby Wagner in the 2nd. Bruce Irvin, a productive situational pass rusher is their definition of a bust at this point. The Seahawks entire offensive line is homegrown through the draft. They're not relying on 30 year old cast-offs to hold down spots for a year or two for them. They went and grew an offensive line the right way, through the draft. They made a few trades, like the Jets have, for people like Marshawn Lynch and Percy Harvin. They added a few free agents in Cliff Avril and Chris Clemons. The roster was built through the draft and it was built with good players taken from the 4th to 7th rounds. If you do that you'll get over the top. The Jets haven't done that consistently in a generation or more. Maybe two generations. Since Parcells left town the Jets drafts have been consistently mediocre. There's only one guy whose been in the room for all of them. That he's not part of the problem is inconceivable (and I do know what that word means.)
There were many reports that Bradway actually did want Russell Wilson badly. Whether or not he wanted him in Rd 2 is something I am not aware of
I'd take his drafting record over Idzik's. ... And did it really suck? I actually don't think it sucked as bad as people claim: Great picks: Jonathan Vilma 2004 1st Santana Moss 2001 1st Kareem McKenzie 2001 3rd Jerricho Cotchery 2004 4th Sione Pouha 2005 3rd Good Picks (Contributors to the NYJ) James Reed 2001 7th LaMont Jordan 2001 2nd Bryan Thomas 2002 1st (although, you can make the case he missed on the pick and should have chosen Ed Reed instead; but Thomas was still a good player for us) Chris Baker 2002 3rd Victor Hobson 2003 2nd Erik Coleman 2004 4th Good players who found success elsewhere Jonathan Goodwin 2002 5th Joel Dreesen 2005 6th Mike Nugent 2005 2nd (people forget we were 2 MFGA away from the 2004 AFCCG) Horrible Picks (I limit these to the 1st thru 3rd rounds): Jon McGraw 2002 2nd Dewayne Robertson 2003 1st (this is by far his biggest miss) Derrick Strait 2004 3rd Justin Miller 2005 2nd (good KR but never developed into a good CB) He picked a lot of good players for us and really only had one big miss (Robertson). There are reasons for complaint though (Bryan Thomas over Ed Reed) but gets far more heat than I think he deserves.
When I think of Bradway I always think of Dewayne Robertson - and giving away our 13th and 22nd picks in the first and our 4th rounder to move up to pick #4 for this bum. A Kicker in the 2nd Round Jolley was dealt from the Raiders to the Jets, with a 2nd round pick and two 6th round picks, for a 1st and 7th round pick.
I disagree with your characterizations on a lot of these picks. For example, none of your "great" picks were great picks. Great picks is when you draft a HOFer ... or a Pro Bowler in the mid-rounds ... or a long-term starter in the last couple rounds. Your "great" picks are all average starters that were drafted early. You're SUPPOSED to draft average starters in the early rounds ... or that means you blew it. My personal opinion is the only great pick he made was the James Reed pick and the rest was a lot of mediocrity and worse. Even the best player he ever drafted (Vilma), we couldn't wait to get rid of him because he was an awful 3-4 inside linebacker who couldn't get off blocks.
LOL @ only great picks are HOF'ers... Vilma was a great pick. The only reason we didn't keep him was because he wasn't a 3-4 ILB. That wasn't his position and we didn't draft him to be that. He hit on a lot of mid round picks including consistently hitting 4th rounders (I even forgot one - Kerry Rhodes). He hit on more picks than he missed on which was my point to begin with - and he gets way too much heat. His drafts weren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be.
Vilma was not a great pick. First of all, he was the fan consensus pick - I'd estimate 80% of the fanbase wanted them to pick Vilma (even before the draft). So it's not like he went out on a limb and took someone nobody was talking about. And second, he arguably wasn't even as good as the next two linebackers that went in that draft (DJ Williams and Karlos Dansby), let alone a HOF caliber player. The fact that Vilma was the best player he ever drafted speaks volumes. And that's just the drafting - his trades were some of the worst in team history and his free agent signings were awful.
Bradway's 4 TD game was when he - according to himself - told Tanny to trade up for Revis 7 long years ago.
I'm so tired of this bullshit where somebody gives a Jets executive credit for liking a player that wasn't drafted. Especially when the news comes our AFTER the "other" player shows himself as outstanding. It's all nonsense and I can't believe people fall for it every time. There's no way you have 100% agreement on every group decision (so of course SOMEBODY had an opinion that was good at the moment). Where are all the discussion on other players Jets execs wanted instead of Sheldon Richardson? Nobody has the balls to put it out there because they only want to show their second-guessing when it makes them look good. There's no reason to dig around for abstract shit. For Bradway, we don't need 3rd and 4th party sources. Bradway was an actual GM. He had the kind of job where his opinion was #1 on draft day. Google up those results and give some more weight to those drafts when evaluating him.
Let's also remember how Bradway lost the first rounder on supplemental draft for Moore. If not for this piece of Bradway Brilliance, they would've had a shot at Favre. We wouldn't be looking all the way back to the late '60s & early '70s for our last franchise QB. If Idzik is replaced, I hope Bradway is flushed away as the new GM cleans house.
Terry Bradway, and his son, and all of his son's friends can all blow a goat. The same goat. When Bradway was GM, he had a habit of passing on obvious draft picks for players that didn't really fit the profile or the need. The past two drafts have really looked like Bradway drafts. More than any Tanny draft ever.
Remeber when Bradway did this: Traded up for Dwayne Robertson Took Victor Hobson in the second Took fullback BJ Askew in the third? Good times.
So you think this means Mangini was the guy who pushed the Jets to draft Revis, Mangold, Harris and Brick? I mean he tried for Gholston (and obviously got fucked in the ass for recommending the selection) but you have to credit the other picks as well. Sure you prob knew that already though if that is right.
I think it's quite possible that Mangini was a huge influence on those drafts. Once Terry got demoted and Tanny was "in charge", the philosophy in the draft changed a LOT. That's not to say that I'd want Mangini as a GM, but Bway's diamond in the rough crap got relegated to the later rounds.
I will forever blame Drob on a combination of a complete idiot in Herm Edwards demanding the next Sapp, Woody giving the okay to trade whatever, and Bradway not knowing what the fuck to do with that.
This is a true story, I have heard this a lot. Wilson would have struggled more here but he still would have been a good QB for this franchise. I would trade our first round draft pick right now for Wilson......
We were pretty decent at drafting those yrs (2006-2007), we gotta get fuckers like Mangini but at the same time not like Mangini back here cause we need to re-evaluate the way we draft ... and oh yeah get Bradway the hell out also.
