I don't know that that's exclusively true. The Steelers and Seahawks, for instance, have recently drafted young QBs and dropped them into fairly complete teams and gone straight for the VLT.

I tend to think they are maybe the 3rd or 5th piece to put in place....after a LT and C at a minimum. Probably good to have some veterans to catch the ball too. That's not to say they're not the most important, just that you can put a young, talented QB on a really bad team and destroy them before you've built around them. Look back at Steve Young with Tampa Bay, as the first example that comes to mind.

Normally I'd agree with you. Except I think you're the one spouting the bullshit right now with your bullshit Cooper agenda. When you're talking about the top end of the draft, you draft the BPA at an impactful position. WR is not and never will be that impactful of a position. It helps to have good WRs, but it is not vital to success. They're the last pieces we should be worried about.

There are 3 major facets that affect every single NFL game much more than the rest, and that's (1) QB play, (2) QB protection, and (3) QB rush. EVERYTHING revolves around the QB now. Get a good QB? Great. Be able to give the QB more time? Great. Get pressure on the QB to interrupt his rhythm? Great. Everything else is secondary to that. So when I'm drafting in the top 5, I'm drafting for a QB, offensive line help, or a pass rush. As far as I'm concerned, that's it, UNLESS there's a game-changing player at the position (and you can see that still hasn't worked out for the Lions or the Cardinals...I'm not counting the Cards success when Fitz is no longer even the best WR on the team). Cooper's not that player in my opinion anyway. But I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about how drafting even a top flight WR in the top 5 is just stupid.

    That's fine. I understand.

Ftr I thought wideout would have been a good choice to go high pick last draft. Even after the Decker signing. But I am thinking the Jets will keep Harvin who, along with Decker, is a more than adequate pairing at wideout. Kerley's disappearing act has me concerned, but Salas imo is at least adequate at the four spot. In short the pressure is not on anymore at wideout. Add in Amaro being the only decent pick from the draft, but still he's pretty good, and the need to invest high picks for receivers has passed.

Another reason to go Qb with that first rounder.

Every year matters - you have to start somewhere you have to begin the process at some point and time, I want to win next year - that's what's on my mind not 3 4 5 years down the road. I don't know what idea you are trying to justify but I am well aware of the shit at the QB position - I'm sure everyone does by now.

No. I have the SS position already taken care of. Not going to lie, this is a dumb question. I would have several players at the top of my draft board. If I feel that SS is the BPA and I already have that position locked up, I'm going to the next guy on my list.

Meh. Marty is even further down the organizational chart than Ryan, and I can't reach a firm conclusion whether all the hype Ryan was spewing this past summer was dictated by Idzik, or not. Yeah, I did not appreciate Marty getting on board with the Hype Express, either. But I still can't tell from that whether he really believed that crap.

Because if he did, he sucks, too.

At this point there's an established Cooper Agenda and an established Mariota Agenda.
Where do I go to sign up for the O-line Agenda?

So WR isn't an impact position? This is the dumbest thing I have ever read in my entire life - Calvin Johnson, AJ Green - these guys affect the game on EVERY snap. Again, if you have read my posts and stopped keying on one player, you would know I like several players at the top of the draft. That's fine if YOU believe Cooper isn't a game-changer - I know plenty of people that would disagree with that notion. Maybe you should watch some tape.

But you keep spouting that bullshit you are spouting. It's no longer of my concern.

Please don't fall for their bullshit - there is no established Cooper agenda. I'm all about BPA - that could be WR / OL / QB / Pass-rusher. Depends on is on the board.

Here's a name you might like - Brandon Scherff plays tackle and guard for Iowa reallllly good.

You just have to pray they do something those 2 have never done. And that's to stay healthy. Pretty big gamble. And WTF is up with Kerley? I agree, he dropped that pass in the EZ last week usually that's a catch for him.

Haha okay, buddy. WR is the definition of not an impact position. You must surround yourself with some intelligent people if what I said was the dumbest thing you've ever read. Again, I'll go the champ route with this...how many Super Bowls have Calvin Johnson and AJ Green won? Hell, we can even go with how many playoff games have they won? Think what you want and try to downplay your agenda...you've mentioned Cooper roughly 6,000 times in the last week. That's called an obsession.

If the pick isn't a QB (preferably Mariota), OL, or OLB, then we're wasting a high pick on a position that I think matters less. If the intent is to keep Decker, Harvin, and Kerley around, then the last pick should be a WR. If we draft a WR at the top of the first, it shows exactly why we're doomed.

Argue with it all you want, I think the evidence is plain as day that those are the most important pieces to the puzzle. WR is ALMOST last on the list (RB takes the cake there).

You can believe what you choose to believe. Not my agenda but that's a problem you will need to deal with yourself.

You need to recognize with the money spent on Decker, and that the Jets at this point are more likely than not to retain Harvin, they are not going to also spend a high first round pick on a receiver.

And ftr BPA is overrated, and NOT what the Jet regime is committed to.

No next year absolutely does not matter. I'm not one of these hopeful noobs dreaming "hey, we add a piece here a piece there, we go 9-7, get the Wild Card and get hot and maybe win the SB, it's happened before WOOHOOO".

I'm older than you, have been waiting longer than you and I honestly don't give a shit about being competitive next year, I want to be competitive in the long term. I want a franchise changing QB. If we win a bit next year, gravy, but not the long term plan for me.

We are not a good team and we are not going to be SB contenders next year. Miami and Buffalo have already passed us and the Pats will be competitive for a few more years at least. We're a last place team AGAIN next year.

Adding a Jake Locker or Matt Moore in the hopes that Vick stays healthy but if not we have a solid JAG backup is nothing to aspire to. Adding a Jake Locker or Matt Moore while taking Mariota at or near the top and letting him sit for an entire year gives you a shot at 15 years of consistent competitive winning football.

Having a top 3 or 4 pick is INCREDIBLY valuable if you get it in the right year. This is the year.

    Stop derailing the thread :D

If we don't get Mariota, I'm FIRMLY on the O-Line agenda bandwagon.

I'm well aware of the WR position at this juncture. The money spent on Decker is very much cost effective and puts him in the category technically as a #2 receiver (recommend checking out Golden Tate, Brian Hartline and Roddy White). Harvin will allow us to look at other positions (IF he stays) - I think we need to shore up the offensive line because the guard position is awful and the tackle positions are regressing.

BPA is not overrated - I think the formula is 70% BPA 30% position need. Then again, I don't know what this Jets regime is committed to.

There will be WRs at the top of Round 2 that will get you 90% of Cooper. Hell, Martavis Bryant may end up getting Pittsburgh 90% of Cooper.

There is no non-criminal QB in rounds 2-7 that will get you even 50% of Mariota.

Honest question, if both Mariota and Cooper both become super-super-dooper stars, which one would you rather have? Which one will change a franchise for a decade at least?

Next year matters big time. 2 drafts have gone by and we haven't done a good job - this is a critical off-season with the cap space and high draft pick. Jets seriously need to nail this draft. You get a veteran quarterback in here, shore up the offensive line, shore up the depth on offense and defense and this team could be better than the past few years. I want to win now.

Buffalo has already passed us by acquiring several pieces. They got Watkins this year and now all of a sudden things are coming together. They have freaking Kyle Orton at quarterback.

Jake Locker? Has never stayed healthy, has never proved he was the man. If you want to go injury prone QB you go Bradford if he gets cut. Matt Moore is good - if you can get him out of Miami then that would be great. In regards to your bold, this was already established eons ago - I am already on the record on saying we can take Mariota if and only he sits - does this regime want to do that? IDK - if he starts week 1 and he's thrown in the fire, his chances of not being the player you want him to be drastically diminishes - if this happens this sets your team back YEARS (hence me wanting a QB that has ran a pro-offense, they are more pro ready). We have to hit this pick, and whomever we get - we are looking at that guy to contribute and help our football team get out of the AFC East basement.

You get Mariota and you make him play right away, then the Jets will pay. We will be sitting here 5 years later wondering why Mariota is so good on the Eagles.

You want "better" than the last few years? Shore up all the wholes and maybe we'll win? That is nothing to aspire to but I respect your opinion.

But we aren't winning anything next year, we're a last place team and until we find a true franchise QB we'll be toiling at 9-7 to 6-10 forever.

So ignore the part where I said we draft Mariota and sit him for an entire year behind Vick/Locker/Matt Moore?

I watched him in the game vs Maryland and came away thoroughly unimpressed.

I think Andrus Peat is a vastly superior LT.

IDK about you, but I don't want to be in the AFC East basement for very long. If we get a good GM and a coach that knows how to get all of his players in the right position to succeed - we can win games next year and get back to respectability. I don't feel very good about our prospects going forward but crazier things have happened in the past.

I have already been on record to say Mariota would be a good pick as long as we have a veteran QB available to start. I don't know if you have a selective reading problem, but that's already archived on this message board.
