This is interesting and doesn't bode well for Geno: http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...ach_taking_geno_smiths_failures_personal.html Jets quarterbacks coach taking Geno Smith's failures 'personal' Jets quarterbacks coach David Lee (right) is at a loss to explain Geno Smith's lack of development. (Saed Hindash | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) By Dom Cosentino | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com on November 11, 2014 at 5:20 PM, updated November 12, 2014 at 8:17 AM FLORHAM PARK — David Lee, like so many others who work at One Jets Drive, spent the summer telling anyone who would listen how much Geno Smith had improved as a quarterback. This was Lee on Smith last June: "You see a guy’s making better decisions because the ball’s coming out of his hands so much faster than it has been in the past. He knows the offense so well, he now knows where everybody is when things breakdown and he has to move or scramble. I think that’s the first indication his decisions are better, you see the ball coming out so much faster and he is doing better." And this was Lee in August, just before the Jets' final preseason game: "That’s probably been the number one most encouraging thing is he’s secured the ball in the pocket. He’s had two hands on the ball, he’s working with two hands on the ball as he’s escaping the pocket and (he’s) moving and sliding. Just his ball security has been a gigantic (improvement). And that’ll be the biggest turnaround thing for us, if he just takes care of the ball and doesn’t get it knocked loose." And now, with Smith on the bench for the foreseeable future, his status for the rest of the season—and beyond—in doubt after he turned the ball over 12 times in eight games and his Total QBR was a sickly 27.6? "I take it all personal, which is why it isn’t easy physically, emotionally, or mentally because I am the quarterback coach and we want to see him progress and become consistent, use his legs, become more accurate, make better decisions," Lee said Tuesday. "When he doesn’t, it bothers me because you feel like you have done as good of a job with him as you could or you missed something. I do take it personal." Lee had little to offer about Smith's ghastly performance against the Bills on Oct. 26, when he threw three interceptions in 11 snaps before getting yanked in favor of Michael Vick, who has since started a pair of games without turning the ball over. "You know, when the game was over I went to him and said, ‘Hey, I had you ready to play,’" Lee said. "He said, 'I was ready to play.' He just made some poor decisions and made them in a hurry and he made them fast. Then we made the move at that time." Lee walked a fine line when he talked to reporters Tuesday. He didn't want to completely bury Smith—"He has a great future," Lee said—but he also declined to get specific about how much longer Smith can continue to play without making any progress. That his answers seemed to place all of the burden on Smith was rather telling, however. "I don’t know," Lee said. "I’m concerned about Buffalo and getting ready this week. I’m not concerned about the future and what’s going to happen next training camp or anything like that."
Dumb-ass quarterback. Doesn't listen to a God damn thing the coaching staff says. David Lee: "Geno run!" Geno Smith: "nah bro, I have to prove I'm a pocket passer"
Bascially he is saying... "Hey guys don't fire me, it's Geno's fault" He may be right though, it's personal cause he could get whacked. Depends on how Vick performs now
Ftr, I don't put aside skepticism when it comes to ANYTHING the Jet CS or FO says anymore. Maybe if they said the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, yeah, I would buy that. But that's the exception. In other words, this kind of self serving crap does not overcome all the bs coming out of Jetland this summer. If Smith had progressed as much as they made it sound, no way he'd be this bad in the regular season. Or maybe not no way, just extremely unlikely. Maybe if Smith had been struggling through injuries, or had worse personnel than before. Maybe. but those are not factors. I think he wasn't as good as the hype even before the regular season started. Call me crazy.
I think something happens before the Chargers game, when he missed the meeting. He was struggling, but fair before that, then everything went to hell quickly. Maybe he got his first ass chewing and couldn't handle it.
^^ the other possibility is maybe we have members of the coaching staff who are really bad at evaluating players.
I am trying to be nice, calling them liars instead of incompetents. Heh. I am after all a New Yorker.
This is such garbage. NO QB that came out of that draft really has amounted to anything at this point. I know its hard to grasp this fact but maybe most QB's that were good in college and overhyped just flat out arent that good and cant adapt to the NFL. Any QB that we could've taken in that draft would've been in the same position that Geno is in right now. There comes a time where players need to be held accountable. You can either make the throws or you cant.
At least the coaching staff finally sees the light. Geno sucks. Too bad they weren't here during the Sanchez debacle.
He is saying the right things just like Geno said all the right things. It is far too little and far too late to save his job unless Geno Smith or Matt Simms gets on the field and does an impression of Andrew Luck.
