I say no QB round 1. Take the best QB in round 3 and groom him. If he doesn't start for 3 years fine. He just needs to be ready if he has to start unless there is an injury. As long as we can put a QB behind center that can throw more TD's than INT's and be able to make some plays this team will be in talks of the playoffs. It looks like we have the WR situation taken care of, but we need to shore up the OL and get some help at CB.
I have no issues selecting Cooper because he's the BPA. Again, raw is not limited to how long a player plays or weak competition. The reason he needs to sit to be pro-ready is because of the fundamentals he lacks. He's spending the majority of this season in practice trying to refine his footwork and fundamentals in the pocket. That aspect about him is very raw, he's going to need major coaching in that department. It's going to take time and time I mean him sitting down with a clipboard watching film.
Haven't heard a peep from him since he told me Oregon has Pro-offense principals. You guys make an awful team.
Are you referring to me? If so, you must have conveniently missed the post below. Also, I didn't know we were picking teams, who's got ball? Change in thought. Post by: legler82, Yesterday at 9:47 PM in forum: New York Jets
You're assuming he hasn't worked on any of that every offseason since he graduated HS, that he doesn't have a staff of QB coaches in the offseason taking him through drills and training and that he might already have those skills. You continue the logical fallacy that since he has not been asked to do something that somehow he can't or that it will be a difficult, steep learning curve. It may be 80% there and the last 20% may be kightening quick. And I'm sorry, Cooper is not the BPA. He's a WR and one not nearly as good as Sammy Watkins- you never take a good WR over a potential franchise QB. Never. _
Oregon's Mark Helfrich: QB Marcus Mariota can run any system How can he run any system? He's never done it--he won't be able to. He's too raw. _
Mariota's junior year, his footwork was VERY sloppy. So yes, he still needs a lot of work. Yup sounds like a raw prospect. Cooper = BPA; as far as I am concerned Watkins is not in this draft. Bills just took a WR over 2 potential franchise QBs and now they are in the playoff hunt so saying you don't take an elite WR over a potential QB is BS if you don't believe in that "franchise" QB. Only thing stupid is your inability to grasp the concept of a prospect being raw. Mariota = raw sorry brah!
In other words, throw away a 3rd round pick in this upcoming draft and never find your franchise QB. Sounds like a plan. _
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/02/geno_smith_is_a_top-5_player_i.html Oh really so every-time a coach says something it's true!? I bet you fall for Rex Ryan's press conferences all of the time - lmao
Keep saying it but it's not going to become any more true, not going to be any more measurable or defined. And Cooper isn't in Sammy's class. _
I disagree. Cooper is in Sammy's class. They are completely different receivers who go about their business in different ways.
Lol, tries to insult me but at the same time - I am 100% correct. I see you are taking this L pretty hard, but hey at least you can say you liked Bridgewater and Carr even though - both QBs were liked very much by other posters (I guess you can call that your rise to fame). Especially myself.
Ftr I don;t know anything about the specific players that were mentioned. My point was the general one that if you attempt to get your next franchise Qb in someone who has fallen to the third round, you are MUCH more likely to be disappointed than if you picked someone who is generally seen as a first round quality pick. Do first round picks always hit? No. Have lower round picks never hit? No, not that, either. But the odds are someone who is perceived as a high first round pick, as a general matter, is going to be more likely to succeed than a second or third day pick. That's why they go higher in the draft. This is elementary football as far as I see it, but some appear to see it otherwise.
Let's pretend for a moment you are right that both Oregon HC Mark Helfrich and former WV QB coach were lying through their teeth in support of their guys. Then is it fair to say that no one believed the latter because all 32 teams passed on him and some, like the team he's on, passed twice. Now, do you think that will be the case for the former? Do you think all 32 teams will again not fall for the "hype" and "smartly" elect to pass on Mariota because as you point out he can't read defenses, go through progression, hasn't shown the ability to take snaps from center, is too raw…ya di ya da ya da?
Heh. Well, it's more than that, but well played. Ftr I do think 101 has a general point. And I don't know enough about Mariota to say how much work he would need to become an NFL Qb. It sounds like you agree it is some, but not all that much. If you're right, then he could very well be the right guy for the Jets. He'd have to sit some, though. At this point i am so averse to starting a rookie Qb, I probably would have sat Luck for a season. Well, maybe not all of it.
Front offices are going to have their own opinion on QBs - I highly doubt they take the coaches word - to me it's all bluff when these college coaches say oh he can run any offense. We have no idea what will happen to Mariota come draft day. It's unlikely he will slide, but I said the same thing about Bridgewater. If a FO believes in Mariota, has a plan set in place for his development - then nothing the college coaches say really matter because they did their own evaluation. I wouldn't be surprised if some team did pass on Mariota. I see the guy is questionable in the pocket - depending on the offense you run, they may pass on him for another QB like Winston. If Tampa Bay finishes ahead of us it's going to be an interesting draft day. Shit happens. Kaepernick STILL to this day fucking sucks in the pocket. Great talent, awful fundamentals.
Both 100% wrong, you seem to be taking these losses pretty hard. Mariota is the opposite of "raw" and Cooper is not in Sammy's class and there will be WRs at the top of round 2 that will get us 95% of Cooper. But yes, let's pass on a franchise QB because he hasn't been asked to take snaps from under center. In fact lets wait until NEXT year for an even MORE "raw" prospect. Good plan. _
