I can't say for certain that the apparent slowness in Smith's ability to read the D is due to a lack of experience in the WCO. But you may be right and it is certainly a plausible explanation.
Because Jarrett is not the player that Calvin Pryor is. He's a decent DB who is a tweener between SS and FS like almost every other safety the Jets have right now. Those are the kind of safeties that Rex likes. They're all aggressive tacklers and should be forcing fumbles in the middle of the field more often than they are. The rules changes on defenseless receivers may have made the archetype less valuable at this point. Pryor is going to be a good SS. He has the instincts and the impact to make a real contribution in the Jets defense. Right now he's playing the tweener role, which is a very tough role for a rookie safety to play. He's not good enough at FS to cover centerfield reliably against NFL receivers and there is a big logjam at SS right now for the Jets. So he winds up moving around a lot in the defense and when he makes a mistake on a play where he had deep responsibilities as the play developed the Jets get burned. I'm actually excited to see what the Jets have next year in a Cover 2 with Milliner on one side and McDougle, Williams, Walls on the other, with Pryor at FS and presumably an import to play FS. I think the secondary could go from a weakness to a strength in a hurry in the right scheme if Milliner can stay healthy.
the WCO sucks ass. Geno Smith, Michael Vick, Peyton Manning, I don't care who's running the show I personally hate that offense overall but especially here. Let's run a complex passing offense based upon timing and reads between QB and his receivers when we have a revolving door at the receiver position and a young QB who struggles with timing anyway and reading defenses. oh and let's mix in some predictable zone read running plays. Good call Rex and Morningweg. Even a better call that we fans got to see 24 games worth of that crap.
Considering his age and lack of experience running a pro-style offense more often than not he makes the right reads. However, he is routinely late because o the bold, his poor anticipation, horrendous footwork and/or inconsistent mechanics. Unfortunately for him and us, his arm is just not strong enough to compensate for those physical hurdles. Emotionally, I think he lacks the necessary tough skin for this market. IMO he has too much to overcome to be "good in the NFL".
The WCO was designed to beat Lawrence Taylor and the Bears 46. You had to get the ball out quickly and you had to make the defense pay for any gaps left behind the pass rush. It was full of traps and draws to make the defense pay heavily for over-committing to the interior pass rush. I'm not sure it's a good offense at this point. The Spread has replaced it as the offense designed to force the defense to play back on it's heels and cover the flats on every play.
he deserved a chance, we took him in rd 2 so they were going to give him a shot. do I think we'd be SB contenders if Vick started? No, we'd be better though. we should never have drafted Geno and instead surrounded our old QB w/ actual weapons.
My only reason for starting Geno over Vick is because I personally think Vick is a little punch drunk. Maybe a part of them thought that if Vick got this team off to a hot start and he got injured, could Geno handle the pressure to keep the momentum going. Just pulling bullshit out of my ass, but I believe this fan base would probably be even more upset at Geno if that happened. I think Geno can play in the NFL, but I believe he needs a situation where he could sit and learn. The Jets aren't built for that and that is a big problem, because hardly any quarterback is ready on day one.
Sanchez wasn't good for the WCO. Fast release but inaccurate and reckless with the football. He's built for an Erhardt-Perkins with a balanced attack that features a good deep option. That's what you want a gambler to run. When he gambles you get 40 yards out of it and when he gets picked you have a real chance at maintaining the field position game. He's going to blow out in Chip Kelly's offense. There are too many short throws in it and the pick-6's will come.
I'm not getting into another Sanchez debate that horse continues to be beat to death in the NFL section aka - sanchezmania ghetto section here but I'll just say a QB who struggles with accuracy and decision making is most definitely NOT tailor made for the WCO.
You know that management is just a game of trial and error. Unfortunately for these guys it's mostly error.
Colts, Redskins, Seahawks, Ravens, Packers, Browns, Bears..etc are all running versions of the WCO to some degree of success.
Vick like Geno got away with lousy ball security with a should have been fumble and trying to force up throws to make something happen yesterday like the pass in the red zone but unlike Geno, looked precise when scrambling and actually ran more confidently than Geno who you can only at times would do this. Vick knows who he is and what he can and can't do, Geno does not know this which is why Vick looks like the better option today. Geno thinks he can make any throw, thinks he can extend plays but what ends up happening is he forces up silly throws or decisions and turns the ball over. The Jets OLine also played well but like I said in the Chiefs thread last week, this Steeler D doesn't have anywhere near the pass rushers a Buffalo or Kansas City have who can expose the offensive line. Will be interesting if Vick does this on the Bills. The better question that no one has the brain or balls to ask the Jets is why the hell did Brian Winters start for almost half the season and why did it take a torn ACL for him to not only relinquish the spot but for Oday Aboushi to finally get a chance to play? Not to say Aboushi has been a star LG but its night and day how that position looks between the two. It just boggles my mind that most likely had Winters not gotten hurt, he would still be this team's starter at LG.....despite all the statistics and his lousy play we see with our eyes tell you otherwise. Now we just need to get rid of the other bum(Colon) and his penalty causing ass. I wish Dozier could get with the program soon because I would rather start him at RG and give him a taste of the NFL for what are meaningless games record wise then go with Colon who is a FA to be.
The WCO is designed so that QBs that struggle with the bold can have success provide they have have good footwork and anticipation, the 2 things Geno struggle the most with.
Yes, however you have to lead your receivers on the slants and crossing patterns and you have to be able to sell and throw the screen. Sanchez routinely hit his receivers on the back shoulder on the crossing routes and slants and by the time he was done here the screen was like 1.6 points for the defense on every attempt (facetious number that represents an uncomfortable truth).
I agree, and thought it likely that was already the case by the end of last year. Just too much to overcome. But I was on board with seeing whether there was enough development from last year to prove that assessment wrong. There was not, and it's very unlikely there would be significant enough development going forward at this point to change that assessment. Count me as one Jet fan who not only has totally given up on him and his future, but so much so that I don't want to see him behind center for the Jets ever again. I'd rather play Vick and keep Simms as the backup.
I respectfully disagree. If Sanchez is not good for the WCO, then Geno is not good for the spread. That's the offense he ran in college. He ran this offense at such a high level, it led to us trading up to draft him 5th overall. A lot of inaccurate QBs have found success in the WCO, most notably Donovan McNabb and more recently our very own Michael Vick.
Sanchez throws a good slant. I agree that he definitely struggled with crossing routes. With regards to the screens, I believe those had more to do with poor design and execution. Anyway all of that has no real bearing in my argument as I've already acknowledge that he is an inaccurate passer. I just believe, scratch that, I know you do not need to be very accurate to have success in the WCO. That's a misnomer stemming from what we remember of the Bill Walsh WCO. There's a difference between having success in the WCO and playing like Montana or Young. The most important you need to find success in the WCO is intelligence (aptitude to retain all that verbiage and understand the concepts), good footwork and anticipation. If you have those 3, the scheme will do the rest. Great accuracy is just extra delicious gravy!
