Hey everyone, I'm a Panther fan and our team has a horrible coaching staff. It's pretty much been this way since Cam's first year. Yet this year they stripped this man down to his undies. They took away his big play receiver in Steve Smith, along with all of his other receivers he developed a comfort zone with. Replaced them with a couple of old possession receivers and an up and coming rookie who is known for dropping passes at times. They let two veteran offensive linemen retire, and replaced them with two former undrafted players at both tackle spots (one is a converted DT) and a third round rookie at the Guard position. Plus his running back core has been banged up. His only reliable guy on offense is Greg Olsen, but lately they kept him in to give Cam max protection because our undrafted tackles consistently gets beat by average defensive lineman. I'm sharing all of this for those who aren't familiar with the Panthers, and might pre-judge Cam as a bad QB. I'm thoroughly convinced, Cam will never succeed here in Carolina under Rivera's watch, as Rivera is solely defensive minded. Cam needs an offensive mind to help further develop his talents. All that said, under all that baggage, Cam still put up records in passing and running for a QB. He broke Peyton's rookie passing record and was the first rookie QB to throw for over 4,000 yards and won more games his rookie year than Peyton. He holds the rookie record for most rushing touchdowns (this includes rookie running backs) at 14. He holds the record for most passing yardage for a QB in his first three years. This is just some of his records that I know off the top of my head. Keep in mind this has all been done with not a whole lot around him other than Steve Smith and Greg Olsen. Imagine what Cam could do with an offensive minded HC and talent at the WR position! A lot of our fans wanted to fire Rivera a couple of years ago and bring in Chip Kelly. Personally I was against Chip Kelly due to his college style of offense, but after seeing what he was able to do with Foles, I find myself wondering what could have been. Yet like I said, it's all moot and I fear Cam will never ultimately live up to his upside here in Carolina. It's a waste of time and money to give him a big deal, if we are still a defensive minded team. We would do better to have the more traditional pocket passer type of QB. (Cam has the ability to throw from the pocket and has done so, but this staff still primarily like using his running ability) So Jet fans, what say you about trading for Cam? What would you give up for him?
I personally love Cam Newton's game. I don't think we would trade for him though. It would take a lot of picks to get him in NY.
I'd give my left nut for that motherfucker. And that's saying something because I really like that one.
Sanchez was not as good as Cam - but if you need a cautionary tale, you'd fine one right here. When he had sufficient talent around, he did adequately well, reaching AFCCG twice. Then shitstorm struck; OL deteriorated, heralded by one and only WFH; his weapons were stripped one by one without a SINGLE adequate replacement - Dustin Keller walked, Braylon Edwards walked, Cotchery was traded, Santonio Holmes exploded, etc. In short - maybe stripping of Cam is an on-going process there in Carolina. It is completed here in NY, and NOTHING remains now. Protection is shoddy, passing attack anemic and run game barely serviceable. If Cam were to come here, I would have to wonder just what the hell he did to Carolina franchise to deserve such a fate.
Not a huge Newton fan but would trade for him in a second. He wouldn't okay the trade to football hell.
I would actually trade wilkerson for him straight up. I think our D line would be ok with coples (at natural position) richardson and harrison. panthers would love more defense apparently. Wilkerson might end up walking depending on how contract negotiations go here but newton I believe is a stud QB.
Yeah now that I think about it, the situation here in Carolina is quite similar to what is happening with the Jets. Some of you mentioned it's worst with the Jets, and I might have to agree. Perhaps the biggest difference between the Jets and the Panthers is the QB position. Cam can win a couple of games on his own when he's clicking right. Next year may be different for the Jets. I imagine Rex will be looking for a job, so you guys will have a new coach. I also imagine you want to get rid of your GM. He will perhaps be out of a job as well. So it's possible you guys can truly rebuild by next year. As for the Panthers, unless we lose the rest of our guys, Rivera will probably be back for us, and like I said, Cam won't truly develop under Rivera. The best thing we can do with Cam at this moment in my opinion, is to trade him. (Most of my fellow fans disagree with me vehemently) I think a more traditional QB would be favored in Rivera's system. As yall know, defensive minded coaches usually sport a running-ball control type of offense. Cam is a guy who wants to put up points, score 30 a game. If the Jets hired the right coach, ideally an offensive minded guy, and traded for Cam, the Jets would be a team to be feared. A team that could dominate Brady's old bunch. On our end the Panthers would get some draft picks? What would you guys say is a fair trade? My offer would be a 1st and 2nd this year (2015 draft), 1st next year, and a conditional 1st in 2017.
I dont think there is anyway we would trade potentially 3 first round picks and a second for cam. right now his value is down and we are rebuilding and need those pics. and to be quite frank, if thats the offer the panthers make I dont think this conversation even continues past this post. if you are looking for pics i think the best you would get is our first and 2nd for cam and your 2nd. maybe your third I dunno, but concidering our first could land us a mariota or winston who probably project to having a similar career to newton would lead us to be wary of giving tons of pics for him. especially on his worst season.
Nah Jets will have the chance to pick a run-first QB that wont do much in the league..no need to trade for one. But with Cam's arm and talent I think he would be a very good QB if he didnt want to run after half a second in the pocket. Its clear he doesnt wanna play that way though.
its not that he dosent want to play that way, he dosent have a choice with the O-Line he has, which was explained earlier.
It could be three 1st round picks. The last one would be conditional. Such as if Cam leads you to a superbowl within the first two years. Yeah, he's having a bad season, but it should be understandable why he's having it. With all the things I've mentioned in the OP, we should be worst off than what our record says at this point. Of course again, that last 1st would be conditional. In terms of Mariota and Winston, these guys are unknowns. They could be good, or they may bust. Cam is more of a proven guy. He's already set the league on fire with his potential, and that will continue to grow under an offensive minded coach. There's reason to believe the Jets will look that way with the next guy they hire at HC. Cam carries all of Mariota and Winston's upside, and even more than that. I don't know if trading for Cam is a great risk, but if we did trade him for a little bit in return and he went on to take the Jets to new heights, we would look like dummies. Of course we might look that way even with a lot of picks in return, and he took the Jets to a couple of superbowls.
So are you saying that Cam was "ruined" by the Panthers. Then trade him to Philly for Mark who according to his fans was "railroaded" by the Jets when in fact like Newton he was treated like a king.
My only gripe about Cam is how he let the Panthers over use his running ability. I would have liked to see more 5 receiver sets, to take pressure off our unremarkable o-line. Yet all we do is run read option plays. Cam's first year, we ran a lot of pro-style offensive sets, and used college type sets as a trump card and change of pace. Yet Rivera wanted to revolutionize the league with Cam's athletic ability, and installed the read option as a main set. Guys in this league are too fast for the college system of read options and designed QB runs to be a main formation. Ultimately, Cam is a team player, and he's gone along with what the coaches have in store. This is why I say Cam will never develop under Rivera. Yet for an offensive minded coach, he would flourish. As for Sanchez, I think he overachieved while he was with the Jets. Yet I don't know. All of us will get a good look at these two guys come MNF.
