The Squids are not mad at moving a home game that has more Jet fans than Fish fans in attendance. There's a TON of retired Jet fans living out their final days in sunny mosquito haven Miami.
There is already momentum for this. They UK Jets club has already started to find organisers. And Gus has started a list on here to see who will be attending do we can all meet up. Unlike in the US we wont be able to take along BBQ's. So you will have to do what we do. Meet in the pub and have a few
That seems counterintuitive to me. The Fins haven't been successful since the last century and the Pats, while successful, I would think the team name might be something of a turnoff to the Brits, no? After all, it is the one team celebrating our kicking them out of the colonies. Or do they not realize this? I'd expect the Cowboys to be popular, or the Giants. Basically some front running team with a fairly innocuous or popular name as well has a solid history. Rules us out, eh? EDIT: like usual I have probably over thought this...
Its bad enough the entire United States thinks and knows we are a joke now we will get to be international jokes. The Jets playing in London will set Wimbley Stadium back 200 years
I've just dropped you a note offering to help (if you're not the right guy, please forward my offer on).
I had some UK friends tell me sometime ago that they were Phins fans. That being the only undefeated champions was something that resonated with them. If they were correct there will probably be a decent number of Dolphins fans there. The Jets always play the Dolphins tough even if they are having a miserable season. It should be a good show for the UK fans.
Yeah, I think many who follow the Dolphins in the UK are older, remember Marino and many winning seasons from the 80s. Those who follow the Pats are (mainly) younger and jumped on the recent bandwagon.
And here in lies the irony of that. A lot of people that I know that support the Patriots is for two reasons. The first year the NFL was on here was 84 i think. So the two best teams were the Bears and the Patriots. Hence there are a lot of bears and Pats fans here. But here comes the ironic part. Some Pats fans pick them because it says "England" in the name!!! not knowing why they are called the New England Patriots and what it really means! LOL Phins are well liked because Dan Marino was the Poster boy for the NFL for so long. Cowboys fans because they had that little Dynasty in the 90's and the Giants as well because they won those two in a row with Parcells. Most fans here I would say are sort of glory hunters.
The Pats are popular because they win a lot...the UK Man Utd fans would support the Pats. We call them 'plastics'. The Fish are also popular because a lot of Brits go to Florida on holiday.
So my question to our British fans is "Why on earth did you get attached to the Jets when you could pick a winner like rest of the Brits?"
No you couldn't be more wide left. 90% of the attendance comes from people living within 100 miles of London and trust me the vast majority are English. There are only a tiny amount of Americans who attend. It always surprises me that people still think this - the fans tend to be very well educated in the game as well...every year thousands of Brits go over to the States to watch games (I've been 18 times myself), we have numerous NFL fan clubs. Our UK media is virtually totally soccer mad, but there is a strong and growing fan base for American football.
Probably the first time the Dolphins will have a home game advantage against us.. From what I hear and have seen from the Fish being over in London, there are TONS of Dolphins fans over there.. I'm just glad we didn't give up a home game. Me and my dad may head over depending on when in the season it is..
Was sitting with my uncle in 84 watching Jets v Pats. He was supporting the Pats. It was the first game I had seen on TV. So i decided to support the other team to wind him up. Stuck with them ever since. Im glad in a way, atleast NY is on the east coast so going to NY and watching games is a little easier. In the 80's I used to like the Jets, Giants and Vikings. But stuck with the Jets more and by the time it got to the 90's I was pure Jets. I think it was the season we went 10-6 after being 10-0 then getting knocked out by the Browns in OT that got me hooked. Must have liked the pain! lol
First time the NFL was broadcast on Channel 4 in Britain, in the highlights, the Jets won and I liked the uniform. 8 year olds can make poor decisions! But, as I've said before, the moment a Jet lifts the VLT all the pain, anger and despair will wash away...that will happen, right?!
