I actually don't think you have to coach both sides, but I agree overall, you do need to be in charge.
Why are the NE Pats so damn successful???? This is clearly because Kraft made BB BOTH GM and HC. Several million dollars very well spent IMO. Lots of success vs few failures.
Marvin Lewis is worth a look. He's proven that he can provide stability to one of the most unstable organizations. And the Bengals went through a stretch before he got there probably worse than any other team in NFL history not named the Lions. Although I'd still probably look for an offensive minded HC first.
It is time for Woody to open his pocket book & try something new. He's hired 3 1st time HCs and 2 first time GMs. The first timers are cheap. It's time to throw some money at a big respected name.
I'd take Marvin, too. Even though he was a mentor to Rex. But I want to distance the Jets as far as possible from him. This team really needs to go in a different direction. No Rex and no Sanchez.
I've seen this mentioned a few times but a coach hand picking his GM isn't as uncommon as some are making it out to be. Carroll hand picked Schneider, Reid hand picked Dorsey...even Gruden is reportedly looking to select his GM if he chooses to return.
Suppose the Bengals crash this year in that tough division and they let Lewis go and they would be disappointed in Dalton as well. Maybe the Jets could grab Lewis and swing a trade for Dalton?? He signed that team-favorable long term contract but maybe they want to move on. Teams don't usually trade effective QBs in their prime but maybe a Cutler-to-Chicago-ish scenario could unfold. Dalton is not Manning but he is an effective QB - something this team hasn't had in forever. Dalton & Lewis would have this Jets team in the AFC East hunt next year. This is probably some pie-in-the-sky bullshit but when you are 1-8 you have to dream of stuff like this cause sundays are miserable haha
I totally disagree. In almost every example of one person holding both jobs, it has been a miserable failure. In BB's example, his drafting has been pretty abysmal. The only thing that has saved him is Brady and Kraft's willingness to spend to bring in quality veteran FAs. Over the 3-5 year period before 2013 if Brady had gone down with a career-ending injury, the Pats would probably have been in the cellar of the AFC East. His last 2-3 drafts have been much, much better than they were previously. Parcells did a HORRIBLE job buying his own groceries. That's one reason he probably left. He knew he had screwed the pooch both in terms of the draft, and in bringing in so many older, higher-priced vets in order to "win now." He knew the team was going to have a rough 2-3 year period and he wanted no part of it.
he also did not like the way Rex treated his fellow coaches, hiring Jeff Weeks, a childhood friend with no discernible coaching ability, and paying him 3 times a much as some of the other coaches. He did not like Rex's silly picks like John Conner and Scotty McKnight because he felt it was an honor to be drafted by the NFL and Rex deprived several people of an honor they deserved and had worked hard for. He sounds like a stand up guy who got a rep aroung NYC as a leaker.
Yeah when I read Collision Low Crossers it opened my eyes to the whole Pettine/Rex rift. Maybe we let the wrong guy go...
I don't think he's ever been credited with developing a young QB but he certainly has shown the ability to get all one can out of a veteran QBs.
I didn't know that about Weeks. Wow, just wow! It's mind boggling to me how anyone can love and want to keep that buffoon Rex as HC. They must have a great deal of self loathing and be true masochists.
From what I gather Pettine was the guy that kept Rex organized and put Rex's crazy ideas to paper. W/o Pettine, it does seem as though what was controlled chaos is turning into just chaos.
