Ah, got it. And now that I get it, I think you're even more deluded. The Steelers are one of the model franchises in the history of NFL existence. Their front office is the envy of the league. But yeah, they only scored 100 touchdowns in the past two weeks, before that, they were a shit organization.
I believe Kevin Colbert is the Pittsburgh GM. He has had a great eye for playmaking talent on offense, but not OL so much. He's done well with front 7 players, but not so much CBs. I can't remember if he drafted Polamalu or not.
No one said they were a shit organization. But no one was posting this praising them before their offensive explosion the past 2 weeks.
I've been praising them for at least a decade on this forum. The problem is that they almost never let FO personnel go to a conference rival.
A lot of people praise them..thats fine. They are a great run organization. But the timing of posts like these (other then the fact that were playing them this weekend) just seems a little off to me. If they lose the last 2 weeks in the type of fashion that they won them this thread wouldn't exist. Thats my point.
The success of the team on the field shouldn't discourage people from wanting to steal FO talent from a team that has consistently put superior talent on the field for decades. It's not like people are saying they want to steal Haley to be the HC. They are among the best at finding superior personnel through the draft.
Yes they are. But why people weren't drooling over their talent before the Colts game is my point. To many their D is old with not many up and coming young pkayers. And the offense has nice pieces but overall during Haley's time as OC there's been more turmoil then success. Maybe just now they are finding their groove. Or maybe they took advantage of two teams playing without their number 1 corner. If the Jets just happen to surprise people and shut them down this week then I'm sure it's the last post we'll see about potential candidates out of Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh's success is based on two things: 1) Roethlisberger Roethlisberger has been masking what has really been an awful OL the past 5 years or so. The guy gets sacked a ton but he's still tough to bring down. If it was a normal human back there they would be getting sacked 100 times a season. So much of Pitt's success on offense is predicated on Roethlisberger holding onto the ball for 8 seconds then dropping a dime deep downfield after Antonio Brown pushed off his DB. DBs can't cover forever, especially when the refs don't call OPI. Pitt has been pretty bad on drafting OL apart from Pouncey, who has recently been injured quite a bit. Decastro is playing much better than his awful rookie season, but it IMO overrated. 2) Continuity Roethlisberger, Keisel, Polamalu, Heath Miller, Harrison, LeBeau, Tomlin (even though he's not very good)... this is a team that has an identitiy and veteran leadership. They're not switching systems all the time, they are not switching personnel all the time. Remember the year Todd Haley became their OC their offense stunk. If that happened in Cleveland, they'd have fired him after that first season. Not a lot of teams have that continuity in personnel. So when they draft these young guys, they get to sit and learn and wait until it's their turn to be the man, instead of being drafted to be the leaders and performers when they should be learning. Honestly, their front 7 drafting hasn't been good either. Cameron Heyward is decent, but he hasn't played like a first rounder. IIRC he was drafted the same year/round you guys drafted Wilkerson. Jarvis Jones has not been good, though in fairness few defenders from last year's draft have been good. Shazier is getting credit for lots of tackles but he's also getting washed out pretty easily by blockers (though he's hurt right now I believe). Sean Spence had injuries but he hasn't played well while he's been in there. Alameda Ta'amu. Not exactly a great list of recent front 7 guys. They haven't really made a good fron 7 pick since they drafted Woodley and Timmons back-to-back, and Woodley's not even there anymore. Anyways, came on here to wish you guys good luck against the Steelers. Most important thing about beating them is getting to Roethlisberger and finishing the play... can't let him wrangle out or he will toss that deep TD. Jets can stop Pitt's run. Pitt can't cover the TE and is not a good run stopping team this year. You guys can beat them. Good luck this week.
Im not posting this in response to their recent hot streak, although admittedly seeing that did make me look at their box scores to see who was doing the damage. Im posting this because over the last few seasons they have lost their best offensive playmaker only for their next man up to come in and produce (some times even more so then the player they overtook) i.e. loose mendehal get leveon bell loose wallace sanders steps up, loose sanders brown steps up, wheaton under preforms and bryant comes in and produces. if we looose harvin next year, or we dont resign johnson and ivory gets hurt we will be in big trouble (although i think powell is underrated) and if we had someone who can hit like that in drafts we wouldnt be in this problem. if your primary talent is aquired by FA signings (decker, johnson, harvin, ivory etc) you need to have solid drafts to replace or suppliment them and saunders, evans, eneuwa just dont cut it.
Good post. Roethlisberger is a brilliant player. He's always been one of my personal favorite players in the NFL.
this thread just proves the ultimate truth in the NFL - have a very good QB - coaching staff/FO are geniuses - have a bad QB - coaching staff/FO are idiots. I have posted this several times before but if you look at pretty much every top rated coach in the NFL what do they all have in common - a top tier QB to lean upon - imagine how the Jets would look over the last decade if we had had a top tier QB throughout that time.
I think there are a few exceptions to this, for example the last few teams that have won the SB have had meh QB's. Wilson gets a lot of praise as a good QB but if you watch him he really is just average. He is smart with the ball but having a monster like Lynch and a great defense go a long ways towards winning games. Flacco might be a top 15 QB but he's certainly not elite. He's paid like an elite QB because he had them hostage. If they don't win the SB he's paid just average. Eli... the guy lives on his last name but he's far from elite although in those SB wins he stepped it up but the guy is as overrated as a QB as you will find.
I also think a quarterback has such a huge effect on everything. Good QBs like Roethlesberger mask their teams' deficiencies and make their teammates and coaches look better. Bad QBs like Sanchez/Geno do the opposite. I do think in general Pittsburgh is a very well run organization, but if you look at their drafts lately, have they really been that amazing? http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/pit/draft.htm The 2010 draft was outstanding, when they got Pouncey, Woriilds, Sanders and Antonio Brown in the same draft. But in 2009, they had 9 picks and only got Mike Wallace out of it. In 2008, they only got Rashard Mendenhall. So from 2008-2009, they were no better, and perhaps worse than Idzik over the last 2 years. In 2011, they got 3 starters, in Cortez Allen, Cameron Heyward, and Marcus Gilbert, but are any of those guys impact players? Same thing in 2012, Beachum, DeCastro, Ta'amu, mediocre to average starters. In 2013, Jarvis, who much like Milliner is out, Bell has looked good, and Wheaton has struggled. In 2014, Shazier and Bryant? If they don't strike gold with Roethlesbeger all those years ago, their front-office might be getting the Idzik treatment right now for that kind of drafting performance, minus 2010. This is exactly why I try to defend Idzik's drafting. A lot of people think all other teams except theirs are drafting studs left and right, but when you actually look at other teams' performance, then even the really good ones like Pittsburgh don't look as good as people expect. So you can imagine what the average team's drafting is like.
Good points. I don't think that GMs of other teams are drafting all studs by any means, but the teams that are consistently tough and in the hunt for the playoffs do have a few things in common imo that the Jets don't have. They are disciplined. They play smart, tough football and don't beat themselves with stupid penalties, mistakes and TOs. They are well prepared each week and show up to play, then play for 60 minutes. Their CS are not only able to make adjustments, but do them quickly and seemingly effortlessly. Those teams also seem to do a better job with player development. When they suffer an injury to a starter, play doesn't usually drop off precipitously with a backup or two in the lineup. With a different CS in place, who knows what might be happening with the Jets and how well they might be playing? Then again, with a GM whose best attribute was his skill in picking the right players in the draft and in building a roster, rather than with the cap, who knows where the Jets might be right now, especially having had 12 picks in this year's draft? As long as Rex is fired, I won't go beserk if Idzik is retained, but I don't trust him. He wasn't my choice for GM. If he's retained, he'd damn well better do a MUCH better job in free agency, the draft and in picking Rex's successor, or we're all screwed for the next 3-5 years. It's just too risky imo, and I don't see any compelling reason to risk it. It may wind up being short-sighted or even foolish to fire Idzik and hire a new GM, but that's what I would prefer. I think Idzik is a good man and he seems like he's a good football man, although if he truly thinks Rex has been doing a great job and wanted to keep him, then he's not a good football man and instead is delusional.
They would get crucified if they were in NY. Steelers drafted Jarvis Jones and Ryan Shazier in the last two drafts. Jones is meh, and from what I've seen around the internet, Shazier isnt doing much at all. If the Jets did that, fans would be calling for his head IMO.
Pittsburgh has had some of the absolute worst drafts in recent history, including at running back. They are brilliant selecting receivers and Pouncey/Bell are studs, but generally they are graded out as one of the worst drafting teams in the NFL and it is a major factor for why they fell off of the map following 2 superbowl appearances in 3 years. They failed to restock their defensive roster. Failed to build a solid OL. Failed to build a solid RB group (pre Bell they missed on every FA/signing).
Yes but no-one credits Coughlin or Carrol as being "great" coaches - the great coaches are people like Belichick, Walsh, Shula etc - almost every coach that is considered a great coach had a great QB - of course there are exceptions like there are for every rule - like Joe Gibbs - but its a hell of a lot easier to be considered a great coach when you are riding on the back of a great QB for example (figures from up to 2013) - Belichick with Brady as his QB - 136-39 or 77% win record Belichcik without Brady as his QB - 51-65 or 43% win record I know there are more factors etc that come into play but the point stands. Great QB = enormous boost to a Coaches reputation.
Ive never seen that belichick stat before thats awesome he has a lower win rate w/o brady the ryan does with sanchez/smith
