Technically, he's already signed long-term. If he continues to perform at least similarly to this, there's no doubt he should be a part of the team in 2015 and hopefully on a slightly restructured deal. But I think you need to be very cautious before giving this guy kind of long-term deal with a lot of guaranteed money given his injury history and character concerns that have followed him every step of the way, especially after just one game. With that being said, it was a very encouraging performance and great to see this guy stretch the field as a wideout, not to mention his impact on the return game.
The Jets were garbage however the few bright spots were Johnson finally showing up, Harvin played great, and Vick was solid. When you're a bad team you have to constantly talk about the bright spots.
I'm really struggling with this "Vick was solid" opinion that people seem to have. He missed throws, Both over, and underthrown and even just totally off the mark. He ran more then he needed to and then got hurt from a pretty mellow hit. He didn't seem to find a rhythm in the offense and nearly lost another fumble, Not to mention the blatantly dropped interception ( that should have been a pick 6 ). He took short dump offs when there were other options available and still doesn't seem to be clicking for his 5th(?) year in this offensive scheme. Just because he wasn't "Geno Bad", doesn't mean he played well..... IMO Simms drive was the most together our offense has looked all season. He got the ball out on time and was getting the team back to the line with some urgency. Like many have said here, Simms was cut, cleared waivers, and signed to the NYJets practice squad.
My main impression was the same I've had on about a half dozen different occasions this year: the offense and the defense play at different speed limits and with different levels of cohesiveness and determination. I was screaming at the screen (for about the tenth time this season) when the clock was running down in the 3rd quarter with the Jets knocking on the doorstep and they just let the clock run out down 14. What kind of offense doesn't just try to punch the damn ball into the endzone and go into the 4th down just 7 instead of 14? And then of course they failed to score after the break. When it was Geno doing this kind of stuff I figured it was Geno's issue but Michael Vick was moving in molasses out there as he lined everybody up. The offense is just a complete mess. No amount of playmakers is going to fix the fact that the QB's look lost in crunch time. Note that this was before Vick's concussion. That happened on the next drive. The Jets had like 24-26 seconds on the clock after the last play they ran in the 3rd quarter. What kind of team doesn't run a play and get the natural timeout down 14?
I wonder why the Jets don't employ certain designated people on the payroll in charge of seeing to little details like this.
Vick didn't play "great", but he was effective out there. Alot of people complained about geno not using his legs to get the 1st down, but now are complaining about vick running too much? i don't get it.... If it's there, I want Vick to run for the 1st down and make the play (and hopefully not get injured). Having Vick out there kinda keeps the defense honest when playing him...he may not be as fast as he used to be...but he can still fly. Even though both qb's are turnover prone...I get less queezy with Vick making the decisions than Geno. Other than that, the o-line performed decent enough, CJ got in some space and looked good, and we finally used some extra lineman to block on running plays...something I was hoping to see re-occur again. Harvin is looking like a decent pickup, while decker disappears too often for my taste. Marty still sucks in the redzone, and the wildcat 1st and goal play convinced me we weren't going to score that drive. I would like to see him put vick under center more and run the ball that way in hopes to avoid missed snaps and keep the defense guessing a bit. On defense, tackling seems to be an issue now as everyone seems to be reaching or lunging. One play in particular on a 3rd down, smith threw a check down to charles which should have been a 5 yard gain at most, but numerous missed tackles allowed him to pick up the 1st. It made no sense because everybody dropped back into a zone and saw it, but they couldn't make the play. Pass rush was negated because either smith got the ball out quick, or we dropped alot into coverage. Some inconsistency in setting the edge gashed us a few times, usually coples does a great job in this. Can't cover a TE to save our life still, and I hope the antonio allen-at-cornerback project is over, and he is used more at safety because pryor is going through his rookie slump and needs to be spelled at times. Secondary still sucks, but either williams or thomas (don't know which one) had a few nice pbus, they weren't good but its been a while since we've even had a pbu.
I'm trying to figure out WHY they would give Kerley an extension. He was invisible yesterday. This team needs all its receivers to be productive.
You can disagree but what I said was my opinion - started the bolded statement with IMO. The ball was coming out quickly and he was making good decisions for the most part. There was a Kerley drop and one that he threw at CJs feet because the rush was on him immediately. Then the "Go" route to Cumberland against their fastest CB, Not sure why we keep calling that play..... ( would put him at 4 of 7 completions ) He came into the game when we basically didn't have any option but to keep throwing and the KC defense had it's ears pinned back and was coming for Simms. The hitch to Decker for first down and the 2 drag routes to Harvin were the best 3 consecutive throws I can remember all season, Maybe I'm just bitter and remembering what I want to. On time, to the right player, and on target. If it wasn't there he threw it away. He gave up no sacks, and didn't come close to turning the ball over.. Forgive me if I see some glimmer of hope in that. Again,.. This player was a practice squad spot away from watching this game from his couch, and by all accounts has not taken a single rep with any #1s.
I couldn't tell if he was throwing the ball out of bounds on purpose or just was that wildly inaccurate. Either way it's a bonehead move that drove me nuts. I know our WRs suck but you have to at least give them a chance to make a play
Vick didn't play anywhere near as well as his statistics indicated. However, I would probably call his overall performance "solid." Vick's biggest issue to me seems to be that he is holding the ball too long and seems to be a bit indecisive at times.
The WCO requires immaculate timing between the QB's and WR's. I don't think the Jets have had that since 2006 with Chad. Here's an interesting thought: have the CBA related changes regarding practice duration and numbers had an effect on the ability to put together an offense like the WCO from scratch?
