Kotite was god awful, but this is misleading. Boomer under the "evil" (lol) clutch of Kotite (played 12 games under Kotite in 1995): 56.8 completion percentage, 2,275 passing yards, 16 TDs, 15 INTs Boomer after escaping the "evil" clutch of Kotite (played 10 games in 1996 for Arizona): 56.0 completion percentage, 2,293 passing yards, 11 TDs, 14 INTS, Boomer was a shell of his former self by 1995. Edit: Boomer did have a resurgent season with the Bengals in 1997 before retiring.
Boomer was good for one of those freak outlier games every four seasons or so. Otherwise he was pretty thoroughly mediocre.
Sad part is, we are looking for mediocrity from QB position - it's been that way for some time. On top of that, 60% eclipsing QBs weren't all that common even during the 90's. West Coast Offense did take the NFL by the storm, but it wasn't the [norm] per se. If anything, 'smashmouth' mentality was still very well alive and kicking at that time. Comparing the completion ratio of the 90's with the QBs of today is more than plain absurd. Hell, Dan Marino hit 60% of his pass four times during his entire career, with career % slightly below 60% mark. Are you saying he is a sub-60%, mediocre QB too? As for Boomer - he eclipsed 60% mark twice - once in 1997 and once as a Jet. He was 58% passer even during his SB days. That he performed closer to his career norm must tell you something [and he is a QB from the former generation. Keep that in mind.]
It's been putrid to an epic proportion. But before we call this Jets team "All time" anything there's 8 weeks to go. The postseason hope & early season spark is dead & gone..but other than the TO woes..many of these ugly #'s could erase rather quickly. I have to agree w/ many others on here. Maybe the Jets roster isn't great..but it isn't 1-15 bad. Poor secondary play gets concealed pretty much on a yearly basis..especially w/ a quality DL which the Jets have. Take a look at the Jets offense. We're been critical of the available skill players but after the Harvin trade this is no longer an issue. People have been getting on the OL..but It's likely middle of the pack compared to league wide. So what is the problem? Yes the QB position is a major hole..but enough to have so many self inflicted errors? Shouldn't this have been put to rest once & for all after the butt fumble??? Something isn't right in Florham park. Our offensive players simply cannot perform any level.Talent & depth are no longer a feasible excuse. Yes it could serve to be better..but no way are guys like Vick, Cj2k,Decker,Mangold,Brick..hell going back to Holmes, Braylon & Keller THIS Bad. For as bad as this offense has been over multiple years..the HC STILL takes a "ho hum" approach to that side of the ball. While not all of this franchise's woes are Rex's doing..I do blame the offense on him. There simply is no accountability or urgency around scoring points & performing. If the defense has a crappy game..Rex will own up to it. The offense always seems to get a pass. THAT'S the common thread among ALL these lackluster offensive seasons. Scheme, overall philosophy, personnel, coordinator, supporting staff..NONE of it seemed to make any difference. PUTRID performance. Why doesn't that bother Rex?
No, my only point was that Boomer's numbers during and immediately after Kotite were almost identical (Actually, worse after Kotite). Again, Boomer was a shell of his former MVP self by the time he got to the Jets. Edit: I wasn't making any statement about the relative merits of a quarterback completing 60% (or any percentage for that matter) of his passes.
And going from 3-13 Jets to 3-13 Arizona is not the kind of improvement you want to imply. Boomer DID lead the Cards to 5-5 after Kent Graham was benched, shitting the bed at 2-4. [But you don't seem interested in this.] Cardinals ended the season with 7-9 mark - and Boomer led the team after Graham fucked it up. Former shell or not, he won 2 more games, with 6 less starts, at Arizona than he did with the Jets.
The discussion was about Boomer's individual performance, not the records of the teams he happened to play on in back to back years. Wins are a team statistic. I see no objective reason for claiming that Boomer, as an individual, played markedly better for Arizona in 1996 than he did for the Jets in 1995. That was my only point.
I can watch video of plane crash corpses rotting or girls shoving poop into each other's holes but I could only get halfway through that article.
Yet everyone still loves Rex. Isn't he suppose to be a great Defensive mind, and didn't he use six straight 1st round picks on the Defense? We have the worst Defense in the NFL and easily the worst in Jets history which is pathetic for an NFL team who once had Kotite as a HC. Anyone that reads this article and still thinks Rex knows what he is doing, should follow him to his next team.
I don't think Boomer was ever wildly accurate (pun intended). And I know this is an exaggeration, but as a Jet, I remember him fumbling one snap per game.
Whatever dude... We have practice squad players at marquee positions and we just faced a murderers row of QB's. Let's judge him at the end of the season. Half season stats are for dumbasses.
Did nobody else watch 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2007? This team is nowhere near as bad as the 1995 and 2005 teams. Those teams just had no hope anywhere. I get the need to vent about a bad team having a bad season but when I read something like "historic ineptitude" it comes across like Hudson in Aliens after the rout, sniveling about getting our asses kicked and game over man...
I loved everything Rex stood for when he got here and those first two playoff runs were awesome. That said, the numbers speak for themselves. Anything less than a total house cleaning will be a major fail on the part of Woody Johnson, and all the reason in the world to have no hope for the future of this franchise.
Starting Sunday, how many games would Vick have to win in a row before ppl on here start threads like: "Holy cow maybe the season AIN'T over"? I'm thinking like maybe 1 game.
I bet the over 6 1/2...So after seeing his conference call on SNY I have a last ditch hope for that, at best. Highly unlikely tho... Day late and a dollar short. I'd be happy for him tho if he could somehow get a streak going
