You know it's funny you are sitting here complaining and crying about my assessment on Mariota - yet not once did you argue against my points or WW's points for that matter. Ignore it or provide details on why I am wrong. Why isn't Mariota raw? What about Mariota do you believe he can run a pro offense? And you failed.
Well, Mariota is MUCH better and those guys who sucked and/or were headcases. But Oregon has been a QB bust factory for some time now so do not draft Mariota. Have I mentioned how awesome Amari Cooper is? _
Dude is a game changer, I suggest you watch him perform. No receiver in the collegiate game today gets separation like Cooper. Oh, and that's not the only prospect I like at the top.
If Cooper has mastered the skill of throwing the ball to himself, then sign me up to the Cooper band wagon.
See the funny thing about this whole discussion on Cooper is that certain posters don't think I'm thinking about the QB position. How sad that is.
Yeah you are thinking about Hackenberger a year latter. BTW who was the last elite to 5 WR to win a SuperBowl?
Every QB in college (other than maybe Luck and Manning) is "raw" transitioning from the NCAA to the NFL so that's a bogus red-herring. And your definition of "raw" is so ambiguous it defies precise discussion. The dude has been competing at the highest level in college football going on 3 full years now. Many QBs in college are now running the spread offense and that's not changing anytime soon because it puts up points and wins games--which is the only thing college coaches care about--NOT developing NFL ready QBs. Even college QBs running NFL offenses aren't doing it 100% of the time. Another red herring. I see a supremely gifted, agile, smart, athletic, accurate QB who to me looks to have the ability to make the transition from a college spread QB to an NFL QB able to lean how to take snaps from center and master NFL dropbacks. I'd rather take a supremely gifted, agile, smart, athletic, accurate QB that runs a spread offense and develop him into a pro rather than take an inferior QB just because he's already learned how to take snaps from center and do a 3-5-7 drop back. That's just stupid IMHO. That's the least important trait. But that's just me. _
How? You completely discredited the whole Oregon QBs comment on your own without me having say anything.
I like Hackenberg, but he's not the only pro prospect I like at the QB position, nor is he the answer for next year. See if you read and understood my posts - I've been wanting to get a veteran in here for next year (sign the QB to a 2 yr deal). You don't think a QB like Bradford, Hoyer, or Matt Moore couldn't get Cooper the ball? That's insane.
Wait, who are you talking about? Amari Cooper? I've never seen him play, not even once. Because I don't watch college football at all and I don't know who the best college WR is, I haven't seen him play. Like ever. Even when one of my favorite college QBs McCarron was playing the last 2 year, every time he threw to that number 9 guy, I shut my eyes, so I really don't know who you're talking about. _
Getting a vet doesn't preclude the Jets from trying their best to draft their franchise QB of the future. They are mutually inclusive.
When Akili Smith was drafted that year, most folks fell off their chairs. He came out of NO WHERE. Mariota has been doing this for 2-1/2 years now. That's just a red herring. _
Oregon has been a QB bust factory for years. But those guys have nothing in common with Mariota. Make sense now? _
Remember when Detroit was good when they kept drafting the best WR prospect year after year? Oh wait...
It's not all about taking snaps under center (this has been mentioned already 100 times). It's also about the QB's adaptation to the pro-offense, being able to read defenses (this has been mentioned 100 times). Mariota plays in a 1 read offense that really does not allow the QB to go through progressions. Those are the fundamentals I want in a QB, using your eyes to manipulate the defense - these things you can't just develop in the NFL IMO, you either have it or you don't (so far Mariota has not shown this). If the QB isn't a supremely gifted athlete - that is fine by me. As long as that QB can read the defense, get the ball out of his hands and make the right decision then I am on board. Durability is key. Running fast, being a world class athlete that's secondary to me. I don't care much about spread offenses, I like my QBs to have experience running a pro offense in college. To me it's a transferable skill-set that will make things a lot easier for the QB in the long-run.
You win consistently with great WRs. All you need is a vet off the street to get him the ball and you're set. Matt Moore with our WRs PLUS Amari Cooper and we'll be consistent playoff contenders. Don't obsess about getting a franchise QB. They are overrated. _
Remember when the Jets drafted a WR year after year? Oh wait ... they haven't drafted a WR in the first round since Key came to town.
Every Jet fan wants a franchise QB. I don't see Mariota as one at this point and time. He's still got plenty to prove.
