Love the Big Blocker mentality you got going on right now. I never said I hated Mariota at all - if you read my posts - you would already know this. Only a dumb-ass franchise would give up a Redskin like package to get Mariota. Especially with the amount of holes on this team. Don't be so salty just because we have differences.
Y'all are a bunch of morons. Pass up on a potential gem at QB to take a wide receiver. Yeah, I'd love that move. I guess Cooper can throw the ball to himself. Let's pass on the most important position in the national football league to grab a receiver and have who throw him the ball again?
No one is saying we should pass on a gem.. Not everyone believes (or has seen enough) to know that Mariota is a gem. If it was a guarantee that he was going to be a star, no one would have a problem with it.
That's not the point. What I'm saying is, Mariota is one of the best prospects to come out of college at the quarterback position. He's not an Andrew Luck, but this guy is legit. The point is, why would you take a gamble and pass on him when he could potentially be the answer? You're telling me that Mariota has such bad parts of his game that he is worth possibly passing on in the first round? Anyone who has watched this kid play knows he is a first round talent. Why take that chance and pass on him?
I wouldnt expect the Jets to pass on him. QB is the biggest need on the team and I certainly wouldnt be upset mad about it. The guy is a big kid with a good head on his shoulders. Doesnt seem like a vocal leader, but you also dont have to worry about him screwing up. I just have a couple of concerns of him as a passer. I wouldnt want to waste a top 3 pick on a guy I'm not sure about. From what I've seen of him, I dont know if he can make all the throws. Everyone says he can, but I see a lot of checkdowns. I dont know if he can read a defense. I dont know if he can go through his progressions as opposed to just checking down if the number 1 option isnt available. He bails and runs a lot. Obviously it partially has to do with his OLine. I'm not saying he cant do these things, I want to make that clear. And I dont want to seem like a "hater," I just havent seen enough from him yet. I'm not comfortable burning maybe the top pick in the draft on a guy with some question marks (IMO of course). Obviously the Jets have more access to evaluate him so I'll trust their opinion him.
Stokes, this debate isn't going to get anywhere. If you love Mariota as a prospect(I do) your opinion will not be altered, and vice versa. Regardless, I seriously doubt the GM in April will pass on him, but who knows , we'll see. But I Don't want to see posters here bashing the new GM, if he passes on Mariota, and he becomes a stud.
No one said anything about passing up on a potential gem at the QB position. What do you truly know about Marcus Mariota besides the highlight films you've been watching on youtube? That's all you had to say.
Fair enough, but my point is this, we can't afford to pass on him. We just can't. We desperately need a QB and if that means we take a gamble on our first round pick on one, then Mariota is the choice. I'd take a gamble on this kid any day to solve our terrible luck at QB.
What was Geno Smith's INT% in 2012 w/ WVU? Note, Geno Smith did not throw an interception until week 7.
I have as well. Oregon's a fun team to watch. We have difference in opinions. I don't see Mariota as a MUST GET prospect. I know we are hurting at the QB position, but I think it's best to go get a veteran for the 2015 season. Hell, we draft Mariota let him sit for a year - I'm 100% in for that scenario. That scenario to me isn't happening at all. We got some good lineman coming out of the draft, some good pro weapons to build this team.
I'm not saying to start him immediately. I'm saying he is not a guy we should pass on. Not with the problems we have at QB. Let's say we pass on him and get a veteran for next year. Let's say we go 8-8 or near it. We end up in the middle of the draft order again, hoping we hit on a late round pick. We are stuck in the loop yet again of finding talent at QB.
The future pro prospects at the QB position are going to be good after this draft - that I believe. So let's say you acquire that new offensive lineman early (Peat from Stanford), go get another receiver (Kevin White from WVU) and sign a veteran to hold the fort at the QB position (Sam Bradford, Matt Moore, Brian Hoyer). We go 8-8, but that should still give us the opportunity to draft a pretty decent QB (or at least trade up for 1). These pro QBs coming out in 2016 and 2017, they run pro offenses they are able to read defenses and go through their progressions outside of their initial reads. Those QBs are the ones I am interested in. They are a step ahead of the curve in regards to one of the more important aspects of being an NFL QB and that's reading defenses Next season is going to be a tough season for Jet fans again IMO, but we can have promise for the future if we do things the right way.
Here's the thing, I've not once disparaged the golden child WR that all these guys are fawning over. Great player. Could bust just as easily as anyone else I want to bust on a QB every year until we find a true stud. I don't give a shit about a WR. That's the difference between me and the dudes taking pot shots. _
it honestly depends on what people see in the position. personally i'd be happy if we took either of them in a vacuum winston is the better football player. he has picked up blitzes, throws with amazing anticipation, and has gone through his progressions. he has the arm to make all the throws and can extend plays with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. he has also taken snaps from under center and plays in a pro style offense. i understand the arm mechanics and footwork aren't great, but he's already improved his arm mechanics from last year and gets the ball out quickly. i watched mariota play 3 games last year and i don't know what to think. i saw a guy that had to make easy, quick decisions and never had to progress through his reads. he also constantly looked to run and has fumbling issues. it just seemed like the offensive scheme was really helping him out. he still has great touch and the arm to make all the throws. he's great with throwing on the run and is clearly a dual-threat. he doesn't move his feet much when standing in the pocket, but that can be taught. if we take into account character concerns i guess you have to go with mariota. he really is a great human being, which is what you want from a franchise QB
