The argument that we should keep Rex because there's no one better to replace him with is completely absurd...it's our (hopefully new) GM's job to find somebody that can fix this mess. It's his job t0 find our Harbaugh, or maybe even hire him
Woody marches to his own tune. What makes sense to us doesn't to him. He's the owner of the team and at the end of the day, his is the only opinion that counts. That being said, I think Rex is here next season no matter what happens. I also think as long as Idzik saves money, it won't matter if his Dp's pan out or not. Woody love Rex and loves money. He's just hoping this firestorm of fan reaction dies out as it will this offseason. They'll hype up the fanbase into believing that 2015 will be different just like they've done every single year before. The only way anything will change around the Jets is a complete and total teardown/rebuild. That's not gonna happen... 2020.. Can't wait.
It's absurd to fire somebody when you haven't a clue who he might be replaced with. Nobody in their right mind would do that, you have to have a short list or you will end up with another Idzik. Johnson was so incompetent he had to hire a search firm to find a GM, you want him to do that for a coach too? Really?
Its not my job to have a short list. Id like to have Harbaugh, Sumlin or Malzahn personally but its not my opinion that matters because Im not doing the hiring
Idzik didn't do himself any favors today with his press conference, not that I expected much but I think both will be gone for 2015.
There are a ton of people defending the head coach of a team that is 15-28 in its last 43 games. Again, he's the most popular 1-7 coach I've ever seen. And that, largely, has to do with him being a cheerleader. Fans like cheerleaders. This is a common deflection, but it totally misses the point. Over the course of the past 6 years, Rex could have easily answered all of the questions he was asked without constantly chirping about how talented his team is. In point of fact, he is the only coach in the NFL who incessantly brags about how good his team is to the media. He goes out of his way to say laughably moronic things on a daily basis. He goes out of his way to be a clown.
or it could be they think he is doing a decent job given the talent available? he is who he is - you don't like his personality, I can understand that, sometimes I wish he would just button it and get on with the job, but no coach is perfect and I think the +ves outweigh the -ves with Rex (if there is someone else that could do better with this team then I am all ears).
I think Rex could go but zero chance Idiotzik goes. He hasn't even done anything yet. He will get a chance to pick his own HC....
Why does team (college or pro) that starts thinking about new head coaches go always go for Gruden and Cower? They were both overrated when they were actually coaches. Cower's too old to have another multi-decade march to the super bowl--and this fanbase would tolerate that idea for about 2 minutes. And Chucky is a fine cheerleader who took motivated teams other coaches put together. I mean after Sanchez and Geno, why wouldn't we want 5 or 6 equally bad career back-ups at QB competing with each other to not start. Or do other people just forget all that and see shiny super bowl rings?
Rex is paid for next year so it's not impossible esp if Woody doesn't want to lose around 3 million. But probably he'll fire him unless Rex can do a complete turnaround. But I doubt it because it looks to me like he's lost the team. Plus his incompetent coaching has caught up with him. His players know he's full of shit.
100% chance Rex is finished, but that's not to say he is a bad coach. What he has proven over his years year is 2 things. 1. He get's his teams to play extremely hard, and when given a team filled with veterans he can go really far. He is also clearly a Top 3 defensive coach in the NFL, and maybe even the best. This year is an outlier, mainly because he was given jack shit to work with in the secondary. The fact Salim Hakim played corner on Sunday says it all. No other coach in the entire league over a period of years has consistently been able to make elite QB's look mediocre. Nobody. 2. He's not good at developing young talent / choosing coaches to help him develop that talent. There are some exceptions like Richardson, Davis, and Harrison but overall he hasn't done a good job. Pretty much none of our 4th - 7th round picks in the Rex era have turned into anything. The overall success rate of those guys is only around 20% but Rex hasn't developed any late round studs. You have to find at least a few to become a great team. Rex will get another Head Coaching job and probably quickly, but it needs to be with a team like the Bengals or Falcons that have a lot of veteran talent, they just need a fire under their ass and new schemes. I still think the biggest mistake the Jets made in the Rex era was encouraging him to become less brash and outgoing. He was at his best when he had some serious swagger, and that carried over into his team. When he had to tone it down though, the wins got toned down as well. The lesson learned should be to not try to make someone be someone they aren't, and if that's what you want, then just choose someone else altogether to be the coach.
When firing a coach you have to ask. Is there a HC that would have done better with what he has been given. Firing Rex would be a Huge Mistake . >jmo
What those people ignore is that this is Rex's sixth season as head coach. The biggest weakness of the team in his first season (2009) was the passing offense. The biggest weakness now? The passing offense. He's had 3 different offensive coordinators and 2 general managers. The flaw in the "Rex doesn't have any talent to work with" argument is that head coaches have influence on the draft. In point of fact, we have taken a defensive player in the first round every year since we drafted Sanchez. Rex has had a major part in our eroding talent base and we have essentially developed zero offensive players under his regime. It's not that I don't like his personality, it's that I don't think he has the personality of a successful NFL head coach. His personality isn't conducive to holding players accountable for their mistakes. We have been an exceedingly mistake-prone team under his leadership (We lead the league in turnovers since his arrival, for example). I don't believe that is entirely a coincidence.
