You realize Hackenberg is only a sophmore, correct? He's still developing. The kid lost his go to receiver, most of his OL and his coach before the season. He made some mistakes against Ohio State but he kept them in that game

I actually think Hackenberg will probably play his last two years at Penn St and come out in 2017. The kid just has it: arm strength, pocket pressence, accuracy and he can scramble if needed.

Yeah that Penn State team is pretty bad on offense. Hackenberg is putting that team on his back week in and week out. That kid is talented as can be.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), you do not work for the Jets. Everyone wants a QB that can play for the next 15 years. In this league, if you are drafting #1 - more than likely you are starting week 1. Mariota is too raw to start week 1, last 2 QBs we rushed out there, they busted. Again, I ask you do you have faith in the Jets to sit this guy down?

It has nothing to do with whether I have faith in the organization or not. Unfortunately I do not work for the Jets and (fortunately) neither do you so anything we say here is just guesses and fantasy land. We need to find a true franchise QB and then we need to develop him and surround him with talent. How that happens is out of our hands.

But passing on a supremely gifted and smart QB because we think the organization will screw him up is crazy talk.

Keep running them out there until one of them hits. That's the only way. Change coaches, change GMs, change coordinators, change OLines, change WRs and TEs and RBs but get the freaking QB.

Passing on the QB because you're afraid of the past and how that portends towards the future is doomed to fail forever because you'll never get that guy.

Gifted, yet flawed in many aspects of his game. Mariota is a very raw talent at the QB position. He still needs to work on his ball security, still needs to work on his footwork, still needs to prove he can read defenses (he has not displayed the ability to run a full-progression-read offense). The Golden Boy has a talented arm, good football IQ. I don't see him as that can't miss prospect like you do though. He's not Luck, he's not Cam Newton.

Now if there's a QB available that has those skill-sets, sign me up. If Winston didn't have those Jamarcus Russell-like off-the-field problems - he would more than likely be ranked just as high if not higher than Mariota in my opinion. Andrus Peat, Amari Cooper, Kevin White, Todd Gurley very talented players available in the draft this year - I think the Jets still draft a QB this draft as well as in 2016.

If Oakland ends up with the #1 pick, could they take Cooper? They dont have any great WRs and he could help Carr out a lot

    Red herring cliche.

He could be better. I'm not a Cam fan.

But he does. And even if he didn't I'd still take Mariota over him. More to work with IMHO.

I take Jameis over Mariota. The alleged sexual assault scares me, but his other "off the field issues" are a joke. The crab legs were more of a misunderstanding than anything. The "obscenities" he yelled? He's a college student. I see nothing that is a damning report on his character.

Something he also possesses is a fantastic ability to focus on football and perform amid all the distractions. That is something we desperately need, as Mark and Geno seemed to get consumed and beaten down by.

Not to mention, he's just a better on-the-field prospect. Mariota comes from another 1-read quick spread offense, just like Geno. Now, Mariota is a much better prospect than Geno was, but I don't want a QB that isn't already at least somewhat developed in reading defenses.

I wouldn't be upset if we took Mariota, but I much prefer Jameis.

Note: Last Oregon quarterback we took was Kellen Clemens.

He amounted to nothing here. Mangenius pick that one.

Cam's been good since the day he entered the league, now Cam isn't the best passer but the kid just makes plays and limits his mistakes. A lot to expect from Mariota in that sense. He COULD be better, but that doesn't mean he will. A lot of players could be better, but they are not.

I'm staying away from Winston because of his attitude - just saying his body of work on the field is very impressive, I thought he was overrated last yr but I do see a lot of improvement as of late. He also has improved his throwing mechanics compared to last season, the ball is coming out quicker.

Clemens was no where near the passer, athlete, prospect, physical specimen that Mariota is.

Clemens had a quick release, a strong arm, can make some really nice throws. I thought he was a really good passer coming out of college. Everything else though, Clemens fell hella short.

I don't want someone that "just makes plays" and isn't a good passer, I want a true thrower of the football. Cam is more athlete/Superman and you can't count on that consistently.

    I like Mariota the thrower.

I think Cam is a decent passer of the football - he throws the ball low at times and that can be annoying but, I read one statistic that mentions that Newton leads the NFL in lowest percentage of 'pickable passes' or balls thrown that should be interceptions. The kid makes plays and doesn't turn the ball over. Cam Newton on the Jets would easily be a playoff contender - he extends drives and doesn't turn the ball over.

There are a lot of QBs that would make us playoff contenders. Hell, Kyle Orton would have us in the playoffs.

That's a possibility. Cam Newton is a far better QB.

Undoubtedly. He's a very good NFL QB and I'd take him on my team any day. I just don't love the guy.

To be completely honest, I want Mariota but I wouldn't be mad if we got Winston.

I don't think Winston will be much of anything in the NFL, but I have been wrong many many times about players, especially quarterbacks. Maybe he will be good. I'll tell you this, it will be easy rooting for him. I've been rooting for him for two years with FSU. It would be an easy transition for me haha

    Still want Mairota

Anyone have any video of Mariota that shows him making multiple reads and snapping the ball from under center? I love the idea of getting a franchise QB, but I just watched the film of the game against UCLA and I was left underwhelmed. He isnt bad by any stretch, but I dont know if he's worth a super high first rounder. There are some red flags that I would like to see fixed. Hopefully someone can direct me to a game where he shows a bit more.

I saw a ton of short passes out of the shotgun and a lot of QB runs. Runs a bit too much for my liking. He takes care of the ball which is nice, but he seems to have only make one read before checking down to his backs. I havent seen him "make all the throws," which we all say so often. But on the positive side, he's a big kid and his OLine has been in shambles a bit.

I'm obviously going to watch more film of him, but if anyone has any specific games that make me worry about more about the ref flags I've placed on him, that would be great.
