Mr. INT is gonna get another 8 games and probably another 16 after that to "develop." You know why? John Idzik doesn't make mistakes. Unlike other teams that aren't afraid to cut bait and admit their mistakes and quickly move on, this franchise will continue to grind its fan base into the ground with a nonstop conga line of Sanchez's and Geno Smiths. The fun never stops. Even when they move on from Geno (2 years from now), the great Teflon terry bradway will just draft another pitiful scrub QB that the HC has to try to sell to the fans with a straight face....
I wonder how many Oregon games the Mariota is overrated crowd have bothered to watch? My guess is less than one half
They are on TV every week. He runs a gimmick offense, imho - which doesn't mean he's not capable of being a Pro Bowl caliber NFL QB, but it does mean (to me) that he's almost impossible to evaluate (unless you're Philadelphia) and we should stay the F away from him in the first round (especially the top of the first round, where he's gonna go). I wouldn't touch Winston with a 10 foot pole either - which means it's likely going to be another time in our illustrious history where we've will have a Top 5 pick and there simply isn't a franchise QB (a real one, not one we pretend is a franchise QB because he is simply the starting QB) available; which is unfortunate, but also typical - HOF QBs don't come out every year.
it would've been a mistake to judge geno solely off of his rookie year. you don't give a round two QB one year, that makes no sense. If JI sticks with Smith beyond this season, you'll be right in that we didn't move on fast enough. But for the life of me I can't see a logical reason to move on after a rookie year. Players aren't who their rookie years say they are. I'm sure Ji is ready to move on, he did his diligence with this one, if he's got any sense (and he does smart alecks ) he's already looking at ways of moving on. heh, actually if Smith hadn't been given the time he has, then the team might have tried to move forward with an untested QB that wouldn't have worked out for a longer period of time. Imagine, they sat him this year while Vick played, and then Smith comes in and struggles the excuse would be that oh he just needs to see some more time on the field. thats not bad rationale after all. but no, we've seen him after a full offseason now, we can move now with little doubt, no passive aggression is left to get in the way. anything that comes outta Smith is gravy form here-on. #NOREGRETS
I can - he was (and continues to be) clearly not an NFL starting QB. Pretending he might be (because you spent a high pick on him), was (and is) never going to make it so. Successful people move on from mistakes and correct them as quickly as possible. This is a mistake that should have been corrected this offseason. You don't have to cut him; but you sure as hell better make sure you have someone else who is a competent NFL QB on the roster ... and give that person a fair opportunity to win the job. And no, just because other GMs would have persisted (like Idzik) with allowing this particular mistake to fester (and a whole lot of them would have), doesn't mean it was a competent decision.
It just seems negligent to move on that early, I mean thats not a winning formula. if one moved on from every young QB that struggled they would never get anywhere, because they all do, even the good ones. How much expectations are we to place on a player thats only had 4 months to prepare for his NFL test? is it realistic to assume that a QB can be judged in his first season? We draft mariota and he gets 25 turnovers, do we move on? is that a good use of resources? I think JI did the responsible thing at the QB position this year by letting Smith get his shot after a full offseason. two years for a second rounder is just fine, no shorter, no longer. this doesn't feel like something that should be given up on at the first signs of trouble.
I think it is fair to say "ugh" now. there were a lot of factors that went into his performance last year and a few were external. But even though those externals were not fully addressed, it was reasonable to expect forward steps. Continuing to commit turnovers at an alarming rate is not the fault of others.
True, but when said QB struggles the fans and media will crucify him. This market is too impatient for that.
I have regrets b/c we had a good QB that just needed some help around him and instead we took another QB and forced a sham competition which got our good QB hurt and we then released him.
He was a 2nd round pick who at one point was regarded as a top 10 pick in the draft. It was a no-brainer at the time, but the kid can't play at this level, he's a 2nd round draft miss which shouldn't be an odd thing for Jets fans, and it is what it is, just move on.
Sanchez- Mexican, Geno - Blk . Who gives a sh#t. Give me a blind one arm midget of Arab ancestry and I would love him if he could get us to the promise land.
At this point play him. No sense in choosing Vick. At 1-7 it doesn't do this organization any good to play a veteran. Let the young players play the rest of the way because we are playing for the draft and evaluating the young players now. Rex & Idzik will switch to Vick though because they want to try and keep their jobs. If I was Woody Johnson I'd tell them to play Geno Smith or Matt Simms the rest of the way. What good does it do if they win a couple games with Vick... none
You have to protect Geno from himself no sense to keep trotting him out there. The purpose of playing Geno was to have enough sample size to see what we have in him. Now we know, we're a garbage team lets see what we have in Simms.
The protect him from himself stuff is stupid. The worst thing that can happen is that he might throw 3 interceptions before he gets 3 completions... well we already saw that happen. It was just another L in the standings and considering we had 6 in a row before that, it's not that much different. The second part though I agree. We've seen enough of him to know he's terrible and this team is terrible so why not play for the draft and see which guys play hardest for their jobs in this circumstance. I wouldn't be against starting Simms at all, I'd be for it in fact. But if they bench Smith for Vick at this point in the season than it will just be another backwards decision in a long line of backwards decisions made by Rex and Idzik. Today is a big day. If Rex announces Vick as the starter now.. at 1-7 instead of at 0-0 or 1-3 like he should have then I think they should fire him at the bye week because at this point he would be doing nothing but hurting the long-term. He's gone either way at the end of the year. So is Vick. Playing Vick will do nothing for this team at this point.
Vick is as bad as Geno at this point, he can't hold onto the ball. I would start Simm's at this point, yes he's terrible, but maybe, just maybe you catch lighting in a bottle, I wish we still had Tajh Boyd lol...
Geno's confidence is probably shot right now. We saw this with Sanchez a few years ago. He's done you don't want to keep trotting him out there to throw pick after pick. He needs to sit at this point.
Roethlisberger and Luck just played head to head and Big Ben "killed him" so that means Big Ben is better than Andrew Luck right? How did Mariota kill Cook and how does that equate in each one's evaluation? Mariota has a major fumbling problem and throws to WIDE open receivers on every pass play. He's incredibly talented but I believe he is being way overrated right now. I am skeptical of him but feel very confident that Cook is going to be a great NFL QB.
He killed Hundley too. Maybe Oregon makes the playoffs and faces FSU so he can add Winston to the list.
