Agree completely with the OP. Drafting and playing Smith was the right thing to do at the time. But after today, I feel the same with Geno as I did with Sanchez after the first 3 years. We gave each guy a chance, and there isn't enough improvement there now to justify more time after this season. We can still keep Geno as a backup or something, but we need to address the QB position going forward.
To me it wasn't hindsight. That QB draft class smelled awful the minute those players were officially in the NFL draft. Scouts knew it, NFL teams knew it. Geno didn't look all that impressive either during his senior year especially the 2nd half of the yr. I agree you play the draft as it is - but that doesn't mean drafting a QB in a weak draft class in the 2nd round is a good idea. Thank God Idzik is tied to Geno as well (or so I hope) then he can go as well as Rex. This has been an embarrassment.
Saying Geno Smith was the best QB in that draft class, is akin to saying Lena Dunham is the most beautiful girl in a comparison that only includes Rosie O'Donnell and Roseanne Barr.
The problem with some opinions here is that we are talking about the jets - not exactly a QB factory...... If it was the packers, or say the colts and they whiffed on a 2nd round QB, most people would say so what and move on. But it's the jets and we don't have the " infrastructure " in place that is conducive to QB grooming. The best thing for the current jets is NOT to bring in anymore rookie QB's - instead make a play for the 5-6-7 year vet that already got his feet wet. We're gonna have to pay up but IMO that's the best way to solidify the position. The only exception is if a blue chipper falls into your lap with pick # 1 or 2, then u have to bite.
Yes, that is the right move and I agree OP. BUT you look at Buffalo and they are hitting on all of their draft picks except QB. I think if we can grab an armani cooper and get better. Geno needs to be a game manager. This idiot GM better not sit on 100mm of cap space or w.e the # is we have open right now this off-season
Geno is done. Time to move on from him just like the Panthers did with Jimmy Clausen. I agree we need a veteran QB though, a QB that has something to prove. If this Mariota guy is the real deal, we need to sit him down for a year and let the veteran take the lumps. New HC, maybe a new GM as well get some more pieces on offense and defense and we'll be back to average at the very least.
as much as I hate watching geno play I think he has a good attitude, work ethic and some strong physical attributes. if like to see what he can do with a few years of learning on the sideline. I agree that any '15 rookie should ride the pine until they're ready too. We need to properly develop a qb like we did with Pennington. Enough of this rushing them in there too quickly shit.
Smith was put in out of necessity and then as a test of progress. It would be nice to have luxury of sitting a QB, but that requires getting a good vet stopgap. The QB position should look something like this next year: 1. veteran 2.Smith/Rookie 3. Rookie/Smith who those vets and rookies are is kind of up in the air. if Vick has a decent outing as starter I can see him being retained, but beyond that we don't have a lot of options...
since when is Idzik tied to Geno? if he had been a first round pick then yeah, as is he was just a guy that fell in his lap. something tells me idzik has a longer rope than most of us fans believe he does.
Well you cut ties with Sanchez, draft Geno Smith and he's starting for the Jets. Yes, I do believe he's tied somewhat to Geno. You traded for Harvin to give Geno a chance. I don't think Idzik has a long rope at all. If things get really bad meaning no more games won this season, then he could be gone.
He may have been the best left in the lo and none of this makes up for the fact that he is as dumb as a rock. Same mistakes over and over again. I agree with your Pennington theory. Time to pay $$ for a vet and then draft a real QB of future and let him stay ion the sideline as the #2 or 3. Clipboard on hand, headphones on and LEARN.
we did a little more than cut ties with Sanchez - we put him out in an exhibition game with rookies and walk-ons and let him get hurt.
This thread is ridiculous Geno was an absolute fuckin waste...the fact that literally everyone passed on him and we took him makes it that much more humiliating
you do realize that all but 32 rookies get passed over every year by every team? by your logic we should trade the whole draft to move as high as we can and take 1 player that hasn't been passed up by every single team
we passed on him twice, and we took him after he fell, hows that humiliating? its not like we over drafted him like the bills did Manuel, he was a guy talked about as a first rounder and we got him the second. Geno was not a waste, he was a touted prospect taken at just the right time.
Absolute horseshit. The 2013 QB class was an awful class, incredibly weak and the 2014 class was universally looked at as a superior class--back in 2013 and that was without Mariota coming out as had been anticipated. There are at least 5 QBs in the 2014 class who are better than any QB in the 2013 class. Go look back at the absolute crap that came out of that class. By drafting a QB in that incredibly weak class in the second round it effectively prevented us from drafting a MUCH better player at the most important position in all if sports, a decision that could haunt us for years. The only way that pick could be rationalized is if Idzik had a set if balls and picked a QB in the first round this year. We had the opportunity to take Bridgewater or Carr right there, but Idzik couldn't pull the trigger because that would have looked like he had failed on his pick a year earlier. Dammit. _
