I think we are bad in the red zone on both sides of the ball. You can either choose to believe that both Rex and MM suddenly this year have become bad defensive and offensive coaches respectively or we lack the talent needed to prevent and make the scoring plays needed in such a condensed space.
The problems with the O do not seem to be on Marty if you go by his history. The problem is that Smith presents a Hobson's Choice, since if you let him air it out, he turns the ball over too much. And if you put the clamps on him, which imo fits with Ryan's general approach to football, he does not produce enough for the O to win games.
I totally disagree here. I think there's an element of Jet fans that do not like acknowledging that the FO has failed to get suitable talent on the roster. You want to think it's a simple matter of changing out the OC. Even the HC can stay, by that line of "thinking". Too bad that line of thinking is unhelpful and inaccurate.
I don't think he needs to be replaced. As I said, he designs a great offense. I just can't stand his play-calling sometimes. The bringing in of Vick randomly, the abandonment of Chris Ivory at times, and abandonment of the run game completely at times. It's very frustrating. I don't understand how suitable talent has anything to do with killing a drive with wildcat or abandoning your best player. He should work to our strengths, not go pass happy just because that's how he wants his system to work.
I sort of feel for MM'. He was suppose to teach a complicated offense to a player totally unsuited for it. He also didn't have the same players as in Philly. But still, he is coordinator of this team.
But according to multiple reports, MM was enamored with Smith when the Jets drafted him. He supposedly favored Smith to Sanchez when the two were battling it out for the Jets starting job. There were rumors that he considered Geno to be an ideal QB for his offense. For example: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ornhinweg-prefers-geno-smith-to-mark-sanchez/
For all the shit Marty has taken, he does not have that much work with until now.... From a schematic standpoint, the Jets offense is twice as deadly now that we have Harvin. I cant emphasize enough the importance of having two outside WR. I was a big opponent of bring Eric Decker as our main guy, but now with Harvin in, Decker should now flourish. NFL defenses right now have to play to stop the Jets run game, the Broncos and Patriots sold out on stopping the run. The Broncos were able to stop it but the Patriots weren't. This ultimately allowed Geno to have an easier time passing, which for the most part he did better over the last two games. Now with Percy, the LBs/Safeties have to give more attention to his side of the field which will give Eric Decker a greater chance to succeed, and give our run game less attention, which should allow Ivory and perhaps Chris Johnson to strive. In the NFL you need two threats, you just do. Look at Flacco last season, when he lost Boldin it put more pressure on Torrey Smith which in turned caused the whole offense to regress. Now with Steve Smith it allow both Smith's to get less attention because the defense cant focus on one. So yes the Harvin addition completely changes the offenses potential. It will help everyone, from Decker, to Geno, to Ivory, etc.
Considering the host of terrible OCs the Jets have had over the last decade+, MM is a huge upgrade to our offense. Now he needs some talent. Now if our offensive skill players and our OLine can finish out the season staying off IR, there' s a chance we will finish 8-8. This team never had anyone the likes of McNabb/Garcia, Stallworth, MacLin, McCoy, Jackson, et al. That kind of talent level has been devoid of the offense since '98.. It was close in 2010 & 2011, but Sanchez is a drop off from McNabb/Garcia/healthy younger Vick, and maybe even Kolb but McCoy is steps ahead of any RB we have had since Curtis.
If the Jets go to a read-option offense with a lot of the bells and whistles that you see in that plan then he'll be a positive element in evaluating Geno's ability to run that type of offense. I don't think he's going to tell the Jets much about Geno's ability to run the WCO they're trying to run because Geno just isn't a quick enough decision-maker to run that offense. I wish it were otherwise but this a game of inches and right now Geno doesn't have those inches which is why the offense can't get things done in the red zone. Percy Harvin is the perfect asset to evaluate Geno's ability to run a one read offense well. The Jets now have the ability to setup a bunch of plays where Geno takes the ball and does something with it immediately. Harvin has the speed and moves to make those types of plays a big positive in the overall scheme.
No argument, I don't think Geno is the answer but it gives them the excuse that Geno had a full compliment of receivers for the second half of the season and couldn't get it done so time to move on past the Geno experiment rather than wasting years like they did with nacho.
The Jets don't need an excuse to move on from Geno by the end of the season. Most QB's drafted where he was are just backups in the NFL when all is said and done. It's easy to move on from a 2nd round pick, teams do it all the time. Most 2nd round picks don't even get a full season on the field in before the team has decided they made a mistake and move on. Kellen Clemens, Jimmy Clausen, Tarvaris Jackson. That's Geno's peer group at the moment.
Sounds like a waste of a good draft pick. Fortunately, the Jimmy Clausen story ended well for the Panthers as they got Cam Newton the next season.
The bold is the key word in your sentence. No one is going to call a perfect and even the perfect call will fail if not executed correctly.
If you have 2 true NFL starting caliber WRs on the outside, it will make life a lot easier for Geno and our the receivers who prefer to work primarily on the inside (i.e., Cumby, Amaro and Kerley. Note the WRs don't have to be world beaters; they simply need to pose as "legitimate threats" to a defense. This is why going WR early in the draft rather than TE would have been the better move IMO. Cumby can pass for a NFL starter but outside of Decker we had no other WR who could do the same.
