Harvin is a playmaker who is still only 26 years old, and will fit into our west coast offensive system. Why can't this move be for the long term? We have the cap space to do a deal like this. And, we only gave up a 6th round pick, which can go as high as a 4th. I'd say we end up giving up a 5th round pick for him. Seriously wondering how anybody could question this move, it's really beyond me.
Your facts are incorrect. Revis costs $7M on the Patriots 2014 cap. He will cost us $5M in dead money on our 2015 cap when we cut him to avoid that massive roster bonus. Overall Revis costs the Patriots $12M for 1 full season.
I'd rather split the 17 million on a 7mil+ CB and one of: Wayne, Maclin, Royal, Crabtree, Thomas, Bryant, Austin, Rice, T. Smith or Shorts.
If he's back, it will be as a FA on a new contract. Revis definitely won't be back on this contract. It was intended to be a 1 year deal all along.
With the news that just came out today that the Jets gave up a 6th round pick, that could become a 4th, and not a 4th that could become a 2nd, I like this trade a little bit better. Losing a 6th round pick if he fails is nothing. Risking a 2nd though is just idiodic, I'm glad Idzik didn't.
You know what's great? Even if we pay Harvin the full amount next season, we can STILL spend 7 mil on a CB and 10 mil on a WR.
If we keep Harvin we will still be 37 million under the cap. Assuming it's in the 133 range. http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/new-york-jets/
This is very much true when you are limited by the cap. The Jets are going to have a very hard time hitting the 89% next year. With Harvin and his $17M impact on the 2015 cap they're currently at $97 million of a projected $151-160M on the cap. So assume they lock up Wilkerson and his current $6.969M hit becomes $13M. They acquire another free agent somewhere for $10M on the cap. They're still somewhere between $38M and $47M under the cap in that circumstance. At this point the Jets almost have the equivalent of an uncapped year coming up. They can go get a couple of the prime free agents, assuming there are any in that category and re-sign Mo Wilk and already have Harvin in house and still be well under the cap. It's like Cap Heaven for a change.
Well last year for example, Revis got $12M and Emmanuel Sanders got $5M. Steve Smith got even less than that, Golden Tate and Decker got a little more than that. $17.6M goes a LONG way.
The cap is projected to spike up sharply next year as the new TV deals factor in. It's looking like $151M is a good projection with a higher number still a possibility.
I don't get it. The Jets had so much cap space saved, then they spend it on a guy who can play so many roles on this team, and it's a problem? Moves like this were EXACTLY why Idzik kept the cap space. It gives you options to make trades like this. Why make the move now? Because the Jets wanted Harvin, and if he were traded elsewhere, the Jets would miss their chance at him. Now they get a half a season to get him acclimated to the offense and see how to use him.
Yea, you're right it does. Luckily, as I tried to tell you once already, we will have way more than $17.6 mil to spend if we keep Harvin.
And if the Jets were in desperate need of every dime of value out of the $17.6M they'd have done something different. For the particular problems they have right now spending $17.6M on a playmaker for 2015 was a very reasonable move. Better to spend the space now when Harvin was available for a 6th round pick instead of having to compete with other teams to sign him.
As for Harvin's big salary if he sticks. These unguaranteed deals aren't worth the paper they're written on. They won't pay him that kind of a salary. So it's open for negotiation. Same with Revis. He is signed for huge money next season but it's not guaranteed. So either he accepts a lower figure or gets released.
Harvin is a better piece than any of the receivers you just mentioned. And if the Jets decide at any point that they would rather have that cap space, they could cut him immediately. However, that's unlikely considering all the money they will have available and how Harvin could fit in this offense.
Seems like a desperate move to me to make a move for this guy when you are dead in the water. Makes a little more sense if the idea is to find out whether Geno can be a capable QB with great weapons around him. I feel like some of you guys are playing it both ways when it comes to Idzik. Praising him for not spending cap money to roll it into next year and now somehow praising him for doing the opposite of that. In the end I think he will make some explosive plays, help win you guys some games, but inevitably get hurt or become a headache.
So then you've spent 7 mill of next years money on a guy who won you some games that didn't matter? Sounds dumb
