Maybe. But I see a lot more potential in Geno Smith than I ever saw in Sanchez. It'd be one thing if we had legitimate offensive talent, and Geno was sucking, but there's no way I could write him off with the supporting cast he's had the past two years. Last season in particular was embarrassing, and no QB would have succeeded in that position.
The simple answer for people that are wondering about the timing of this trade is: Because the NFL goes on. He is signed through 2018 if we want him that long. We are rebuilding and had the opportunity to bring in a rare talent. You pull the trigger if you're 0-15 when you get a chance like this.
Yes, and what about what this might say about Rex? I remember back in the draft when Harvin was taken by Seattle, it was reported that Rex really wanted him. Perhaps Idzik and Rex are still on the same page, perhaps Idzik is still open to keeping him after the season? Maybe he's not out to get Rex after all?
It this point we should be trading away the players, not signing new ones Doesn't anyone watch baseball. Idzik trying to save face and make Rex the scapegoat when we still lose after he goes out and spends the money.
A desperation move by a floundering team trying to make a desperate stab at relevancy in a lost season. And a note to the Rex Ryan butt boys: this ain't saving him. In the words of Hawk Harrelson- "he gone!"
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com writes that the trade feels like a "Hail Mary" for GM John Idzik. "At 1-6, it’s likely too late for Jets coach Rex Ryan to save his job," Florio writes. "But it’s not too late for the team to avoid losing so many that owner Woody Johnson decides to get rid of G.M. John Idzik, too. "The out-of-the-blue decision to trade for receiver Percy Harvin feels like an attempt by Idzik to win enough games to avoid getting fired. And also to sell enough tickets to keep Johnson from getting antsy about the impact to the bottom line."
When your season is over and you are going to be firing your coach, you trade with teams still in the running and start working toward next season.
I will say this, if by some miracle Idzik did get fired, I'd want the in-house candidate Rod Graves to take over as GM. He did very well as GM of the Cards, and his drafting's amazing.
low risk high payoff . gets help for young QB that was neglected and needs it. What is up with your hate or are you wiling to wait another yr of loosing. Go root for giants or someone anyone else because you make no sense. Why do you hate the move tell us all something we do not see or do you want to be losing for the rest of the season? fuck that I want to win everygame
I dont know because the fans and the team were behind rex and the smarter fans were turning on the owner and the gm becuase they created an un-winnable situation for the coach. I think woody's really scared rex goes somewhere else and wins there
I have to ask again for the 5th time... how is this a desperation move? How in the hell can someone classify a rebuilding team acquiring a young, unique talent at a position of need under contract for the next three years a desperate move?
Good point, all this will do is get us to 5-11 maybe so that we miss getting a top 5 talent in the draft.
