You watch good teams you you see an undrafted player starting on defense, a 5th round pick making impact plays, no name college guys becoming all pro players - solid scouting and development. The Jets have no one like that.
Um ... Snacks is a Pro Bowl caliber NT and he was undrafted. Antonio Allen was a nobody late-round pick and he's started for us at two positions. Darrin Walls was undrafted and he's arguably our best defensive back (which isn't really saying anything). The problem isn't finding unknown talent on defense. The problem is we can't draft worth a damn in the early rounds; particularly at QB.
Of course it is. But this thread is about why the Jets suck now. And the reason the Jets suck right now is because both Idzik and Tannenbaum did terrible jobs with the draft.
Our search is over. You're hired. The premise of this thread is correct - We have completely failed drafting offensive talent in the last 8 years, and strangely enough, our team has been offensively inept during that era. There were times during last night's game that I shook my head wondering who could make a big play on offense. TJ Graham? David Nelson? It's pathetic really. All we have is mediocre drafted talent (I believe Amaro can be special, but he needs a lot of polish), one above average FA WR (Decker) , and a bunch of FA cast offs we had to sign because most of our draft picks have been flops. We lack the ability to take the top off a defense, and we lack the ability to turn a short play into a big one. Simply put, we need playmakers and don't have any.
There are quite a few players on this roster that deserve this length of debate over their play........Amaro isn't any of them. He's a rookie. The drops will stop. He will be a difference maker....hell, he already IS.
Amaro has a long way to go. Potential is there. He plays timid though... I was mortified when we picked Coples...didn't we already go through this with another DE who should have his hand in the ground at all times (Ghost)...coples and wilkerson should play DE...4-3 IMO Wilkerson-Snacks-Richardson-Coples Davis-harris-draft pick at lb...
You have a selective memory then, I remember a lot of posters excited about Hill's physical traits. We were coming off a season with Holmes and Plax and everyone was complaining about needing a receiver with speed.
2008 and on has been horrendous 2008: Ghost, Keller, Lowry, Ainge, Henry, Gardner.....Fail 2009: Sanchez, Shon Greene, Slauson.......Fail at the end of the day. Sure they contributed, but meh. 2010:Kyle Wilson, Ducasse, Joe McKnight...Fail 2011: Good class all around 2012: Coples (currently backing up jason baibin), Hill, Davis, Bush and others, antonio allen 7th rd. AVG draft, one starter worthy player (Davis) and one good reserve in allen. 2013: Dee (all signs point towards miss), Sheldon, Geno, Winters-fail, rest N/A. Avg. Missed on a top 10 draft pick though!!! 2014: Amaro...TBD! Pryor looks solid. Everyone else has been cut im pretty sure. That is not gna get it done. Not all teams can hit on 4th rd guys like seahawks and develop them well....but you miss on top 60 picks and you are in real trouble...
The only way to get better us to draft well, make some risky trades and sign some decent FA's. Have we done all three?
^Pryor does not "look solid". The "big hitter" looks very timid and has wiffed on tackles and looked lost in pass coverage. Jury definetly still out.
this years draft has a lot of unknowns, but thats to be expected year one. Pryor and Amaro have gotten the most time, and will need more time to reach their potential. Pryors struggled a bit, but in areas that can improve with time. Jace looks good next to his peers though, so thats something. McDougle and Evans are unfortunately out with injuries, next year will tell us what they have to offer. Dozier hasn't seen a snap, he's getting the red shirt treatment like Aboushi did last year it seems, thats another wait and see. Reilly and Enemkpali are in situational roles, if activated at all. but they were late round LB's thats about what you'd expect. Enunwa's still on the PS for some reason. the rest have been cut, but when you draft twelve thats bound to happen. Saunders was the biggest failure of the draft, mainly because he was cut before anything was allowed to happen with him. Maybe JI didn't want to wait on him to develop and thought he could get more out of other players in FA, but whats that say about what he thought of his own picks? Boyd and Dixon weren't bring much to their positions, Jeremiah george got picked off the practice squad after losing his job to the solid AJ Edds. the whole draft has a lot of question marks, but its hard to make final judgments on it. Come bad next year, pryers still taking poor angles, Amaro's not growing, McDougle and Evans don't contribute, the LB's are both cut and THEN its a failure. Now? Its impossible to call either way, the most you can say is that there aren't a lot of impact players out the gate.
Pryor is solid....still wont play up to potential but he is not a FS..we have two SS with him and allen, pointless pick IMO, need a FS ballhawk. We have a lot of work to do this off-season
I wasnt here when that draft happened but the board that I posted on hated it. Plus every other Jet fan I knew hated it. Sure we all knew Hill has skill/speed and potential but his college stats were garbage compared to Jeffrey and even Randle. Jets reached. They picked a 4th round WR in the 2nd.
