This may all be true, but the head coach (who always gets to hire the position coaches and assemble his staff) is responsible for all position coaching. The head coach gets held accountable for poor position coaching, first and foremost. Rex has been a head coach here for six years. If he still has incompetent coaches in charge of the various positions of the team, that is a serious indictment of his ability to construct a competent coaching staff that serves to shape, scope, and ultimately perfect his football vision.
This is just a misunderstanding of what Idzik's/Seattle philosophy is. No one ever said you build only through the draft, no matter what your philosophy in the NFL is, you will use all tools available, draft, free agency, trades. The difference between Idzik's approach and say Tanenbaum's is Idzik's emphasis on finding good deals. With the NFL salary cap the way it is these days, teams that want to be good have to find ways to save money, because they can't afford to pay a lot of guys high-end contracts. Look at Seattle, they had a bunch of talented guys playing on cheap rookie contracts when they won the Superbowl (Sherman, Thomas, Wilson, etc) and then they combined that with shrewd free agent signing/trades, like getting Michael Bennett and Percy Harvin. Idzik is trying the same approach, with one key difference so far. Seattle got majorly lucky for a few years in the draft, that's not going to happen too often, but to Idzik's credit, he's finding good deals outside of the draft as well. We are paying Chris Ivory 2 mil a year, that's a heck of a deal for us. We signed the best WR available in free agency, Decker, for about 7 mil a year, which is a good deal for a guy of his quality. Meanwhile, Tanenbaum was throwing away money on guys like Holmes, Harris, Sanchez, etc. Another difference is quantity of draft picks. Tanenbaum was always giving picks away to trade up or for other things, Idzik wants to keep as many as possible to increase the chance of hitting on quality players in the crapshoot that is the draft. A lot of people are down on that now that our 12 pick draft hasn't gone very well, but that's just luck, and sometimes you get bad luck. But over time, having more draft picks draft after draft should begin to pay dividends.
draft is a crapshoot if you're the Jets. Ever notice every Sunday how other teams are always finding good players?
Kinda looks that way, but sometimes the grass is just always greener on the other side. I used to think Patriots were great at drafting, but recently a lot of their fans seem to think Belichick sucks at it.
That comes with network he has - and Raiders sabotaged Jets in a big way. If Ryan could get Hue Jackson for his OC, then let him pick the position coaches, Jets offense wouldn't look as bad as these.
the patriots struggle in the draft more then the jets , but they outcoach the jets and do good moves in free agency and landed a lotery ticket in tom brady lol.
Maybe, but Rex has hired two offensive coordinators, now. The offensive staff is still ultimately his responsibility. You don't get to absolve yourself of the responsibility for the team's lackluster offense as the head coach. If Rex is incapable to seeing that a competent offensive staff is put in place, then he should go back to being a defensive coordinator.
Overall though Idzik has yet to even come close to as good as Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum put together a championship level roster, something Idzik has yet to do. Looking back to, Tannenbaum did get screwed, one losing season after 4 straight years of playoff contention should not have warranted his firing, the mentality was that Tannenbaum had left a team that was just absolutely devoid of talent and had bad contracts all over, which is true to a degree, but we lost Revis, Keller, and Holmes for practically the entire season that year. This is NY though, so one bad season and you are out.
I get that, but remember. Ryan had no previous experience with any of his OCs. (By the way, make that THREE. Brian Schottenheimer, and [GULP!!] Tony Sparano, then Marty Mornhinweg.] I'm more than positive that, Hue knows what Rex wants, and Rex knows how Hue operates. By the way, Hue Jackson had previous experience with Marvin Lewis as well - hence his position in Cincy. While Bengals' offense isn't world-beater, it sure is a better offense than Jets offense as it stands. I think that matters quite a bit.
I wanted Hue Jackson when it was first reported that Rex wanted him, so I'm on board there. However, if this season ends up being as bad as it looks like it will be, I just don't feel that Rex deserves another chance to hire another offensive coordinator.
I think he will spend more next year. I do not think he was thinking of winning a division this year. I don't think he is necessarily undermining Rex but he will not compromise the cap with bad (too long) deals so Rex can keep his job.You will see him hand out a few multi year deals to FAs in the off season. He may go hard after a solid QB type if one becomes available. I will be very disappointed if he does not bring in some kind of wideout with good tools. I would prefer a FA since drafted guys are often low impact. I would like to see them act like they want a payoff position next year.
Build up this o-line via free agency! Look at the cowboys, they built a great line and are grounding and pounding the defense & the clock. THAT WAS OUR M.O. We have the defense and RBs (and running QB) to do it. Thats the cheapest way (for idzik) to do his job, and help mask the fact that we have no franchise QB. Its worked before, its worked for others, it can work for us!! Again! If he's gonna be cheap he has to at least be cheap with a thorough plan, not some 10 yr bullshit.. Nobody has time for that.
Hue was the only guy who got something out of the Raiders but they fired him in a power grab when he tried to overstep his chain of authority. And didn't he make the Carson Palmer trade giving the Bengals two no. 1s if my memory serves me right. Pretty insane and then the Raiders got rid of him anyways. If you want to talk about an org with Qb problems of major proportions just look at the Raiders who this year sign a veteran in Schaub and then don't play him. In spite of all of that craziness Hue would be a good choice to replace Rex. He's currently O C of the Bengals.
oh, totally agree. The Raiders have made soooo many head-scratching decisions. To be honest, I thought both Lane Kiffin and Tom Cable got fired too early. They have been the prototypical revolving door of coaches since Gruden and Callahan left.
There are so many posters clinging to the here and now or the past. I get it, it's easy to do. Rah-Rah. I just figure, I've waited this long without seeing a SB in my lifetime, what's the point in being so negative about it all. It only makes things worse for everybody. I can't remember ever seeing a team in a transition like this before. I've never really seen this team consistently try to utilize the draft and minimize f/a the way it is being done now. It doesn't look that great, I agree. Neither did the first three years of the most recent Seahawks rebuild. They came out of the wash looking damn good. Time and patience is important in times like these. We are not in win now mode, anyone that thinks that we were, are fooling themselves. Hitting this panic button is only going to crank up the heat on this thing, triggers are going to be pulled prematurely, and we will be right back in the muck. Once again. Rinse and Repeat. It never fails. This community, our fans, so many of you are miserable people when it comes to this team. For what? Some of you have been waiting 40 + years for another Super Bowl, some of you not as long but long enough in your eyes. So I guess that gives everyone a right to be so negative and impatient? I mean, I can look back since I've been a fan and the one consistent component is the fans. It's not a good consistency either. It's always negative, always hateful, always impatient. Everyone wants to win but nobody wants to be patient enough for that to happen. Expectation of an instant miracle Super Bowl run is always there but nothing good was ever just handed to someone in this world. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to get there. We are in that process right now, it's a damn shame that so many of you are feeding into this bullshit, once again. It will ultimately lead to more of the same. Sucks.
Three, yes, but I'll also raise you - two offensive assistant coaches named Matt Cavanaugh and Bill Callahan. There's been no shortage of experienced offensive coaches during Rex's tenure.
People are setting themselves up for massive disappointment if they think what's happening here is the same as what happened in SEA…LOL
Callahan was pretty good actually. Jets OL performed as one of the better units under his guidance. Cavanaugh - not so much. He's instrumental in fucking up Sanchez's development, employing that stupid 3 second beep system when the offensive system [feat. Brian Schottenheimer] doesn't even make sense. I didn't like the release of Callahan, but I was pretty happy to see that sack of shit Cav take a hike.
