I just read an article by Mehta online from the Daily News ripping Idzik and saying that Rex is trying to cover for him. What a crock of shit.

a first a mehta article that makes sense. This Gm has hurt this team and it is worse now then it was when he took over. You can not argue that his points are on about the draft as well. Read you might learn something. The only issue I have with the piece is the shot at Idzick being 32 our 32 gms. that was un-needed and without naming a source he should not write that

There's a web site called nyjetscap and he expertly breaks down the Rex-Idzik-Woody situaiton.

Let's take two of the points made and see if they connect.

    1. Our GM's plan is to build through the draft instead of wasting valuable cap space on overpriced veterans. It worked for the Seahawks didn't it?

    2. Our last draft was OK so far because you can only count on your top two picks contributing.

The last time I checked, we need 11 starters on each side of the ball, specialists for pass rushing, various offensive formations, and special teams as well as backups in case any of these guys get hurt.

With an average NFL career of 3 years (this is how long the average player is in the league, look it up) how do we fill all of our needs through the draft unless we luck out and find four to six starters each year like the Seahawks did recently?

Just because the Patriots found Tom Brady in round six does not mean that we should plan our strategy on the same thing happening for us.

The fact is that without a tremendous amount of luck, it is impossible to build a Superbowl winning roster through the draft alone. There are too many holes on any team to count on the draft to fill them all. Trying to do so will only tempt a team to bypass a superior player for a lesser player that happens to fill a perceived need.

Not only had our management failed to compete by neglecting to use the cap space available but they have also made poor decisions in evaluating the existing personnel and identifying areas of weakness that absolutely needed to be addressed in the last off-season.

Our offensive line is crumbling and we only seem to have two players in Decker and Amaro that present any threat in the passing game. Our quarterback has minimal production and gives up a defensive touchdown every week with no signs of improvement. Last week we couldn't even run the ball even though it seems to be the only thing our offense can do right.

With all of the talent, high draft picks, and coaching our defense can't cover the checks written by our offense.

We have been rebuilding for more than 40 years. When does it stop?

Rebuilding for 40 years? To be fair, we had 1998 with Parcells, playoffs under Herm and Mangini and we did go to back-to-back AFC Championship games, but yeah now we are back to Square 1.

Jets took a saftey and a TE in the first two rounds - not positions you necessarily build around. But that's the problem. What was this year - playoff run or rebuild? It seems Rex wanted one thing and Idzik another. And that's the same position were are in today and when the season ends.

I keep telling ya, folks. The problem lies deeper than meets the eye.

Jets position coaches are mostly trashes and garbages. If you thought Rex Ryan was responsible for coaching up the entire roster, you are sadly mistaken. Position coaches may get some input from the head coach, assistant coach and coordinators, but they are responsible for coaching up the individual position.

As for Jets, Karl Dunbar is the only premier name you can think of - and he's coaching the DL. It's not a wonder that DL has become a strength of the unit, with a UDFA find of Damon Harrison. That's what a good position coach will do for you. As for the other positions, I've seen better pile of horse shit than what the Jets call the "roster of position coaches." Start with Sanjay Lal - and end with Mike Devlin. Jets WRs and OLs suck big goat dick for a reason. Timmy Mac hasn't been stellar in terms of his DB coaching, and Jets LB coaching has been god fucking awful for near full decade now.

With position coaches as atrocious as it is, it really doesn't matter who Jets pick during the draft or through free agency. The only decent WR coach Jets had in recent memory was Henry Ellard, and I don't know if he quit or Jets cut him. Whatever the case is, Sanjay Lal is a steaming sack of shit, compared to Ellard. At least Ellard corrected Braylon's dropsies, and Jets looked to have some promising aerial attack at one time, heralded by Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Jericho Cotchery and Dustin Keller. That turned to Sanjay Lal; and how did Sanjay develop Stephen Hill? Hill went to become a bust. Same deal with Vlad DuCasse. After Callahan, Jets had Guglielmo, and then promoted Mike Devlin internally. Under Callahan's guidance, Matt Slauson became a decent starter for the Jets. After Callahan departed, Jets OL deteriorated year after year. Back on topic - true, Jets shouldn't have drafted a project player in 2nd round, but failing to make something useful from highly touted draft picks within a time frame of 3+ years is inexcusable. That's not on scouting department. That's on coaching staff - more specifically, the position coaches.

So Jets would have to get better on position coaches first - once that happens, we can talk about improving the talent level of the team. As of right now, Jets position coaches are mostly utter trashes.

Kurt - I have great respect for you. After all these years, you know that - or should. But here's my problem. Problems, actually. One of them is emotional; the other more analytical.

I've come to the realization that "rebuilding through the draft" is a goddamn waste of my time. Where there is such a thing as free agency; where the draft is such hit-or-miss proposition; where keeping your own draft "hits" long enough to pay dividends is iffy; and, where certain positions offer value-plus in terms of winning (or losing) football games, the concept of "rebuilding through the draft" in today's NFL just makes no sense. Draft well - yes; just don't bet the future of your franchise on the NFL Draft. The odds are so lousy.

So, we spend a high second round pick on Geno Smith. I have no problem with that. My problem is that teams condemn themselves to a full decade of mediocrity simply by making a mistake drafting the quarterback position and locking into a guy who doesn't have the arm/heart/head/legs or whatever to lead a team to a championship in the NFL. It's the single most important factor in a team's success. I don't want to get into a Peyton Manning debate with the usual culprits, but take him off the Denver roster and stick with... oh, say, Kyle Orton... and does Denver with the AFC Championship? They'd still have a pretty effing good stable of receivers, but the guy assigned to get them all the ball can screw that up in so many ways, we can't just assign it out at random. That one position has such added value that I think we should spend as much time avoiding the wrong guy as we do trying to find (and nurture) the right one.

My point - while the NFL Draft is great entertainment and drama each year, "rebuilding through the draft" is such a fool's errand. Every team, every year is trying to rebuild through the draft. Have the Patriots done such a whopping great job at drafting? I can't see how. But they did have stability at one particular position for the last decade or so. I'd trade any number of draft picks for that sort of stability.

    Impatient? Unreal?

All I have to say is - poor, poor Teddy Cottrell. He was this Board's first real villain. In hindsight, he was chubby and loveable and misunderstood. Or something. Or maybe not. But, just going back to the birth of this messageboard, he really was the first dude that needed to be fired that I can recall. Poor, Teddy.

But then there was Paul Hackett. Surely when we replaced him everything would be right in the world.

Next up - Doug Brien. We were one kicker away from a Superbowl. So, of course, let's draft a kicker somewhere at the top of the second round because, as I recall someone posting here - as soon as we cross the 50 yard line it was a guaranteed three points.

Herm was a constant villain for some. Except, of course, the folks in KC, who were willing to pay good value for the guy. It was a win-win here, because he was the one obstacle for this team, for sure. And, of by the way - as an added plus, we get to cleanse ourselves of a Heimerdinger, Henderson and Bradway while we were at it.

But not really Bradway. Somehow he got to stick around.

Enter the team of young geniuses - Tannenbaum, Mangini and Schottenheimer.

That act didn't last very long. Although, Tannenbaum and Schottenheimer got to stick around a while longer. Until it was clear that they were each a problem.

On comes Rex - and what great fun. The defense was everything one could ever hope from a Ryan family member - aggressive and attacking. Something you could build on. But, geezus that offense was holding the team back. Schottenheimer..... Sparano..... and now Mornhinweg. We'll get the right guy.

Oh, but that Mark Sanchez mistake - time to end that experiment. On to Geno Smith. But wait....

The point here? This is just a quick outline of the last decade or so. Just as far back as this messageboard. On every single one of the examples I listed, there were people on both sides; one side posting something or other about being patient, and the other looking to cut losses and move along. If some important Jets person would stand up and tell me to be patient and say it in a way that would have me believe it's anything different than what has always been - then, yeah, maybe I'd be an unreasonable clod for not quietly waiting for the latest and greatest master plan to play out.

We just need a full house cleaning. Idzik and Rex are in way over their heads. It's a disgrace.

Build the O-line first and then get a qb. Any good prospect or qb will be killed behind a bad line.

It starts at the top. Until they truly clean house, this shit will continue to go round and round like a nauseating ferris wheel ride in perpetuity.

Woody needs to bring in one guy to build the whole thing. If he needs advice on who that guy is, then call Polian or any other top NFL insider and pay them a few bucks for their consultation. It's really not that hard, Woody.

But only 3-4 teams right now have the luxury of the Patriots, the Broncos and Packers and Saints. Other teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Bengals, Falcons for example are more typical on how to find success recently. They all have above average quarterbacks who succeed with the right talent and team around them. They aren't going to carry a team to the playoffs like a Rodgers, or Brady, or Peyton, but they will put up above average play and you know they are your long term starter.

So drafting alone will not make it work, but drafting and spending wisely is the key. If you look at the teams I listed, look at this list of running backs and wide receivers:

Torrey Smith, Antonio Brown, Leveon Bell, AJ Green, Giovani Bernard, Julio Jones.

What led these teams to above average play for a lot of years was building through the draft and having a team that could help absorb the lumps of a young QB. I wouldn't call these teams wildly successful, they fight for a playoff spot every year and a few injuries can derail them, but that's how the league works if you don't have one of those special QBs.

Now that doesn't mean drafting alone. All of those teams and key FA acquisitions too, but if you don't have that special QB the draft is your means to figuring out how to properly build the team. Also, the way to get that type of QB, is the draft. Peyton Manning and Drew Brees were FA pickups after injuries. Every other long term starter now was drafted.

All that being said, you have to execute the plan. Right now I'm on the side saying that the Jets missed on Geno and have to QB shop next year in the draft. At the same time, I think it's too early to judge Idzik completely on his plan. The Jets were in a bad spot of mediocre play with bloated contracts and old talent. That takes time to fix. The Jets overachieved last year masking the fact that they were a flawed team. They still are a flawed team unless Geno took that step to special QB, which he didn't obviously.

And what's the one thing these franchises all have in common? Solid leadership at the top. Ozzie Newsome and the owner did a great job in Baltimore building that roster. Pittsburgh has the Rooney family for 100 years. Bengals with the Brown family finally got it right after many, many years of inpetitude. The Falcons did it right with Blank and Dimitroff building it.

Woody needs an architect to put the Jets franchise on solid footing. They need a plan and a direction and after that, chances go way up that they'll be competitive most years like these other franchises mentioned.

The NFL network over the weekend was also ripping the GM. Seemed like all the heads were in agreement that Rex wasnt the problem the GM was. Most thought Rex will stay and the GM will be fired.

Oh Rex is definitely the problem too. Idzik isn't the one coaching this team. If Idzik goes, it better be Rex going with him. Ryan had ample chances and has failed miserably the last 4 seasons. W-L record, lack of playoff appearances, lack of developing QB's and other coaching mistakes fall on him before anyone else.

Agreed, get a veteran QB to hold the fort while we rebuild OL and fill the #1 WR and CB spots.

Then get our QB of the future and a pass rusher to complete the puzzle.

I don't see where I said anything all that different, except you could boil my post down into two basic points. First, scolding any long-suffering Jets fan for lack of patience is a tad insulting; but it's a discussion forum, so - fair game. It's just one of those not-so-fresh arguments. Second, there's one particular position that means more to the success or failure of a franchise than any other, and we should be picking up and chucking out quarterbacks - by draft, free agency, or however - until we find one who doesn't make me want to blow up my neighbor's house. It's not about assigning blame. When you consider how many first round QBs were washouts, drafting that position is such a wild crapshoot. But, if Idzik, Rex and the rest of the front office are truly sold on Geno Smith as the future of this franchise, they all need a visit from the Turk. Armed with a taser.
