I am not sure why the Jets cannot utilize Bilal Powell's skill-set the way they did Leon Washington? LW returned kicks, played RB - hell, even the 'Seminole' worked when he ran it. Point being, they found ways to get the ball in his hands other than just at RB. It's baffling to watch the cluster-fuck that is our return game and they have a guy standing there in Powell that has to bring more to the table than what we're seeing. Hell, try and use him like Sproles and return punts as well.
Valid points. Walter Powell fumbled twice on special teams, guy is an absolute scrub. Bilal should get a look at PR/KR if they aren't going to utilize him on offense, which I think they should. Bilal is better than C Johnson at this point. We have no goddam idea what we're doing on offense.
Powell could be used in better ways, but he's certainly not nearly as explosive as guys like Sproles or Leon Washington.
I wasn't implying that he's as explosive as either of those guys, but that shouldn't preclude them from giving the guy more touches than he's currently getting. So if they're not going to take touches away from CJ or Ivory at RB, KR/PR is a viable option, IMO. Especially considering what they've run out there so far has been awful...
There must be something that stops Powell from returning kicks or punts, since this is his 4th year on the team and he's never done it and in that time we've had need at both positions more than once. For KR, I'm pretty sure it's his lack of top end speed. You need you KR to have good speed, that's a given. I don't really know what stops him from returning punts, but there must be something.
It's just baffling that a team bereft of offensive players has a guy standing on the sidelines watching instead of figuring out how to get the guy touches. But you're right, I am certainly no genius, so maybe there is something with him that they're reluctant to even try him on returns. I just don't get it...
It's not like he's Antone Smith scoring 40 yard TD's every game yet still only getting 4 touches. It's not like he's Cordarelle Patterson busting out 120 yards on 3 carries and then getting zero carries the next 5 games. He's a solid depth back, not exactly someone I'd be screaming to get more touches.
I would use him like we did last year as a complimentary running back with Ivory and mostly use Chris Johnson as slot receiver. I don't think the Patriots will expect this look and with a shortage of receivers and Chris not being productive out of the backfield he could be effective at Wr over Rb. Bilal is a good player and should be used.
Your describing guys like Leon Johnson, Chad Morton, Lamont Jordan, Leon Washington and James McKnight. All guys that have had success returning kicks/punts for the Jets. Which is exactly what I'm suggesting as a way they could get more Bilal involved.
My only guess is that they see Ivory as an injury waiting to happen and don't want to expose Powell to special teams hits.
IMO, Powell is better than Johnson (today). The running game is absolute shit bc 1) we insist on at least 85% of the offense running out of shotgun. 2) The O-line can't block for shit (case in point Ivory first 5-6 carries yesterday, maybe more) 3) As someone above said, we have completely no idea what we are doing on offense. MM, sucks worse maybe than Sparano, zero adjustments in 5 weeks counting.
Have we ever under Rex though? It was covered the first 2 seasons due to the fact that we actually had a lot of talent. But once the talent diminished all the flaws have started to pop up.
Put CJ back to return because he's potentially explosive and hand Bilal the football because he can actually run the ball. It's so simple that they will never do it.
Powell isn't an explosive player. He's good at everything in my opinion, and he's quick but not fast and doesn't have great top end speed. I think because of that, the Jets lean towards CJ as the secondary back because they think he still provides that home run threat. Problem is if CJ won't catch the ball and gets stuffed at the line, there's not much for him to do.
To be fair he actually has started putting the ball in Ivory's and Amaro's hands a lot more over the last couple games. Ivory couldn't get going but MM was calling his number a lot.
I think a lot of those carries were out of shotgun, but I would have to watch again. No pulling guards, no counters, no traps, just straight ahead or to the "edge" which for some reason Ivory kept pulling up instead of trying to turn the corner. At least that one hit on miller was fun to watch, but I think that was from a caught pass. Idk sometime yesterday I just completely tuned out (I think it was the 2nd special team fumble). There just isn't much to root for right now. Everything looks bad and it's clear there is little leadership. These Jets are boring
Well, I'm pretty sure we'll have a new QB next year. I want the Jets to just start Geno for the rest of the season, but I'm pretty sure he will just prove that he is not the guy to go forward with. Like I've said before, if Rex can coach this team to an 8-8 record, I'd like him to stay. Hit some holes in FA, lock up some of our guys long term, and then draft a QB. That's where I am right now.
The odds of a rookie QB coming here and starting right away - and winning games - is very low. Mariotta hasn't proven he can be an elite quarterback in any system. Jameis? Tons of question marks.
